“These Are Probably The Worst Pies In London. I Should Know, I Make Them:” A Study And Reconstruction Of Properties In Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, Natalie Avery

Theses & ETDs

This thesis focuses on the materials and construction methods behind the pie props for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The first part of the thesis focuses on prop construction as a technical form and expands on what constitutes a consumable prop, as well as defines key words and vocabulary I use throughout my thesis. It also introduces the two productions I modeled my prop pies after. I focused on the 2023 Broadway production and the 2015 Vancouver Opera’s production, as well as a practical ‘cookbook’ as further reference. Here, I explore the materials and processes they followed …

The Future With Holograms In The Music Industry, Brianna Barron-Moreno Jan 2025

The Future With Holograms In The Music Industry, Brianna Barron-Moreno

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis some problems that were addressed was how the technology of holograms could serve as a dual-market enhancer: by being an experimental art form and aid with the lack of scalability in live performances. In order to address this, much of the research delved into the ways that holograms could help enhance live performances, connecting artists together through telematic performances, and the various of ways that holograms could be used as a tool in order to help ease behind the artist’s live performances without sacrificing quality. Further research was done on the business side as well, showing how …

Medieval Solutions To Modern Pandemics: A Comparative Analysis Of Social Reactions To The Black Death And Covid-19 Pandemics, Ciara Mcilvenny Jan 2025

Medieval Solutions To Modern Pandemics: A Comparative Analysis Of Social Reactions To The Black Death And Covid-19 Pandemics, Ciara Mcilvenny

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the various social reactions to pandemics, particularly the Black Death and COVID-19. During the Black Death, people struggled with displacement, sickness, and death due to the pestilence, causing them to turn to their scientific and religious institutions for explanations. 673 years later, the world was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the same consequences. The social reactions to the most recent COVID-19 pandemic are eerily similar to those recorded during the Black Death, revealing the consistency in human nature when responding and reacting to pandemics.

The Long Shadow Of Pride And Prejudice On Contemporary Fictions Of Arranged Marriage And Marriages Of Alliance, Candice Belluscio Jan 2025

The Long Shadow Of Pride And Prejudice On Contemporary Fictions Of Arranged Marriage And Marriages Of Alliance, Candice Belluscio

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an examination of the conflicts between arranged marriage and companionate marriage in selected contemporary Anglo-Indian novels and novels about Orthodox Judaism. The project’s guiding focus is how modern ideals of independence and choice in marriage coexist simultaneously with older ideals of marriage as family or personal “alliance.” The dissertation has a historical chapter that shows that although ideals of companionate marriage have become norms of 20th century western society and literature, the term “companionate marriage” is a recent invention and convention, and that various degrees and forms of arranged marriage, or marriages of alliance, continue despite their …

Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust Jan 2025

Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study is to address a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between theatre and empathy; specifically, investigating how varying levels of participation in theatre may influence cognitive and affective empathy. This study examines whether empathy can be fostered through mere observation of theatre or whether active participation yields greater effects. Twenty-eight undergraduate participants, all of whom attend a small liberal arts college in the United States, either participated in three theatre games or observed their fellow participants playing them. The results did not support the primary hypotheses, as most empathy-related measures showed no statistically significant …

The Art Of Adaptation: Translating Short Stories To Film, Jakob Schreck

Theses & ETDs

This thesis addresses the process of adapting a short story into a feature-length film and what techniques that filmmakers use to translate a written work in a visual format. The adaptation essay features two case studies of short stories “The Sentinel” by Arthur C. Clarke and “Why Don’t You Dance?” By Raymond Carver and what directors Stanley Kubrick and Dan Rush are trying to accomplish with their adaptations of these stories into 2001: A Space Odyssey and Everything Must Go, going through what each director does with their adaptations and each of their approaches to them. Effortful Emotion Regulation Strategy Use And Cognition: An Individual Differences Approach, Christopher John Schmank Jan 2025

Effortful Emotion Regulation Strategy Use And Cognition: An Individual Differences Approach, Christopher John Schmank

CGU Theses & Dissertations

As we age, several cognitive abilities decline, yet the ability to regulate emotions remains stable (or improves) even when the emotion regulation strategy required is mentally effortful (i.e., requires cognitive resources for success). The primary aim of this dissertation was to examine how expressive suppression (i.e., the inhibition of emotional responses and behavior) impacts cognitive processing speed following a sadness induction procedure. Groups of younger (participants between 18 – 29 years of age) and older (participants over 60 years of age) adults completed three measures of processing speed, first following a no-regulation control condition. The control condition began with participants …
