Commedia Dell'arte: Capturing The Ephemeral, Timothy Burhouse Jan 2025

Commedia Dell'arte: Capturing The Ephemeral, Timothy Burhouse

Research Honors

Commedia dell’arte is an improvised form of theatrical comedy/satire that was popular in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. While it is no longer frequently performed in its original state, the characters, comedic structure, and performative conventions of Commedia dell’arte can still be found today, from Shakespeare to Charlie Chaplin to Star Wars. The breadth and prevalence of comedic influences that trace back to Commedia Dell’arte secures this art form’s place as a cornerstone of modern comedy. Studying this art form can enhance one’s ability as an actor and comedian and can deepen the theatregoer’s understanding and appreciation of …

Between Sangate Aika And Bhumika: Finding Hansa Wadkar, Aarti Wani Jan 2025

Between Sangate Aika And Bhumika: Finding Hansa Wadkar, Aarti Wani

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Hansa Wadkar was a popular film star of Marathi cinema, who had established herself as an actress with considerable histrionic skills, essaying a range of roles in films belonging to a variety of genres during a career spanning several decades, before and after Indian Independence. Despite the success, Wadkar’s unconventional personal life was troubled and difficult. In the early seventies her autobiography, Sangate Aika (1970), was published. Subsequently, Shyam Benegal, a stalwart of the Indian New Wave, made Bhumika (1977) broadly based on Wadkar’s autobiography. The film’s realist framework underscored by its critique of patriarchy, succeeded in bringing Wadkar’s journey …

Striking Similarities: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Tap Dance And Ballet, Shannon Maloney

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This research explores the relationship between tap dance and ballet, two genres of dance often viewed as polar opposites—if they are considered to have any relationship at all. Qualitative research methods were used throughout this process, including consulting texts and videos, conducting ethnographic research by attending the Woodshed Experience tap dance intensive, and choreographing a dance work featuring both tap and ballet dancers. This project investigates the relationship between the genres in the areas of technique, choreography, and pedagogy. There is significant overlap in the techniques of tap dance and ballet in the areas of musicality, polyrhythmic expression, isolated muscle …

British And South African Perceptions Of African Participation In The African Military Campaigns Of World War One, Eric Mathew Martinez Jan 2025

British And South African Perceptions Of African Participation In The African Military Campaigns Of World War One, Eric Mathew Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

Historians interested in reconstructing the events of World War One have consistently noted that the military campaigns that occurred in sub-Saharan Africa have been given scant attention. It is commonly accepted among researchers that while there has been some focus on the impressions of the individual European soldiers involved in this conflict, wide gaps still exist in the literature. Very significantly, a thorough search of the literature clearly reveals that the perceptions of whites towards their African counterparts who participated in the military campaigns has been very much neglected. This dissertation helps to close this gap by focusing on the …

Insurrection And Black Political Participation, Brandon Hasbrouck Jan 2025

Insurrection And Black Political Participation, Brandon Hasbrouck

Scholarly Articles

The Reconstruction Congress envisioned a comprehensive set of rights and structural protections in the Fourteenth Amendment to establish and preserve a multiracial democracy. The Fourteenth Amendment’s third section, the Insurrection Clause, may seldom have been enforced in recent memory, but it remains a vital part of the Amendment’s framework. The Insurrection Clause bars any state or federal government official who participates in a rebellion or insurrection after taking an oath to support the Constitution from serving in such a position again. In Trump v. Anderson, the Supreme Court was given a choice to either enforce the Insurrection Clause’s protection …

Litigating Landlessness: The U.S. Department Of The Interior And First Circuit Court’S Appropriations Of Self-Governance And Socialism In Puerto Rico, 1934-52, Carmen Lopez Villamil Jan 2025

Litigating Landlessness: The U.S. Department Of The Interior And First Circuit Court’S Appropriations Of Self-Governance And Socialism In Puerto Rico, 1934-52, Carmen Lopez Villamil

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

In 1946, three Boston judges decided that the Puerto Rican legislature could redistribute American-owned sugar plantations to workers. Though deemed legal, the redistribution never happened. The unreported 1946 land rights case, People of Puerto Rico v. Eastern Sugar Associates, entangles how self-proclaimed socialist and anti-colonialist officials at the Department of the Interior administered a New Deal empire across Indigenous and island territories. In conjunction with the Department of the Interior’s published reports and Felix S. Cohen’s Papers at the Yale Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, case files from the Boston First Circuit Library reveal engagement between federal and military …

Heroes Or Tyrants? Using The Leadership Of Chiang Kai-Shek To Re-Examine The Legacy Of Abraham Lincoln, Edward Woolery

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Today, reappraisal of history has become paramount in society. Scholars seek to contextualize building names, statues, and the land we live on. However, historians time and time again fail to reappraise popular figures in American history and misrepresent them by placing them on a pedestal. This thesis will analyze the existing body of scholarly work and primary historical sources to compare two such leaders from history in Chiang Kai-shek and Abraham Lincoln. Chiang Kai-shek is largely unfamiliar to American audiences; however, he provides a model in which Americans can reappraise Lincoln. Both Lincoln and Chiang led their nations through civil …

Understanding Injury Risk In Female College Dancers: The Interplay Of Mobility And Strength, Audrey Clark

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

INTRODUCTION: Female college dancers present a unique set of demands that contribute to a risk of injury different from other sports. Two of the primary physical demands of dance, mobility and strength, are also known risk factors for non contact injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mobility, strength, and non contact injuries in female college dancers and add to the current gap in literature. METHODS: Participants (n=10) completed an injury history, hand-grip assessment, Functional Movement Screen (FMS), and monthly follow up injury surveys during the duration of the study. Means, standard deviations, correlations, and …

Baseball Takes Root In Kansas, Colorado, And Nebraska, Revised, Mark E. Eberle Jan 2025

Baseball Takes Root In Kansas, Colorado, And Nebraska, Revised, Mark E. Eberle

Monographs

The spread of baseball during the mid-nineteenth century is sometimes associated with soldiers and former soldiers who served during the US Civil War. This association is partly true in Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska. However, white settlers from the Northeast and Midwest also brought baseball and similar ball games to the region before the Civil War began, and civilians played ball during the war. The first team organized in the region was the Denver Base Ball Club (BBC) in March 1862, although it disbanded as warmer weather permitted mining activity to resume. Increasing numbers of baseball clubs were organized in Colorado, …
