Patients with immune dysregulation may present with varying combinations of autoimmunity, autoinflammation, immunodeficiency, atopy, lymphoproliferation, and/or malignancy, often with multisystem involvement. Recognizing specific patterns of immune dysregulation, coordinating and interpreting complex diagnostic testing, and choosing initial (often empiric) treatment can be challenging. Centers are increasingly assembling multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to standardize evaluation and optimize treatment of patients with complex immune dysregulation (immune dysregulation MDTs [immMDTs]). However, published information on the composition and function of immMDTs is sparse, and there is little guidance for those seeking to establish or optimize an immMDT. To inform this review, we assembled a panel of …

Examining Parents’ Perceptions Of Their Children’S Autism And Completion Of Genetic Testing, Georgina J Sakyi, Sarah S Mire, Robin P Goin-Kochel, Chaya N Murali, Susan X Day

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Though genetic testing is recommended for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), both internal (e.g. parents’ and providers’ valuation of genetic testing) and external (e.g. insurance coverage) barriers exist, and exploration of these factors is required to close the gap between provider recommendations and parent follow-through. In a sample of 290 parents, we explored (a) how parents’ ASD-related etiological beliefs and symptom attributions, as well as income, affected genetic testing completion; and (b) whether these factors influence parents’ hopes or concerns about genetic testing. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to investigate the factor structure of the ASD attribution …

Rank Aggregation Methods And Tools In Genomic Data Analysis, Wenping Zou, Savannah Mwesigwa, Sayed-Rzgar Hosseini, Zhongming Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Rank aggregation (RA) is the process of consolidating disparate rankings into a single unified ranking. It holds immense potential in the field of genomics. RA has applications in diverse research areas, such as gene expression analysis, meta-analysis, gene prioritization, and biomarker discovery. However, there are many challenges in the application of the RA approach to biological data, such as dealing with heterogeneous data sources, rankings of mixed quality, and evaluating the consolidated rankings. In this review, we present an overview of the existing RA methods with an emphasis on those that have been tailored to the complexities of genomics research. …

Background: Measurement-based care (MBC) is a clinical practice where patients complete standardized outcome measures throughout treatment to monitor clinical progress and inform clinical decision-making. However, MBC is rarely adopted in routine substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. We developed a digital MBC system and pilot tested it in an outpatient adult community SUD treatment setting.

Objectives:The current study aims to characterize qualitative feedback from the pilot participants about their experiences using the MBC system in SUD treatment, focusing on perceived benefits, drawbacks, and suggestions for improvement.

Methods: Participants (N=30; n=11 female 37%) completed weekly MBC questionnaires via smartphone for 6 …

Given the differences in trajectory for under-represented minorities in biomedical careers, we sought to explore how a virtual mentoring program, the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN), and its platform (MyNRMN), may facilitate transitions in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) pipeline. The purpose of this study was to describe how the size of an MyNRMN member’s mentoring network and level of engagement correlate with academic and career transitions. We examined MyNRMN platform user data from March 2020 to May 2021 (n = 2993). Logistic regression estimated the odds of a career or academic transition related to NRMN …

Certain moral beliefs and/or values about what is good or harmful can cause nurses and other healthcare professionals to object to participating in some clinical actions. Such objections are also called conscientious objections. Invocation of a conscientious objection (CO) can produce complexities in patient care and health care delivery and must be mindfully evaluated for its soundness. In this manuscript, a recently developed framework, The Ethical Evaluation of a Nurse’s Conscientious Objection (EENCO), is applied to expose hidden elements and nuances in a proposed or actual CO by nurses or other healthcare professionals, thereby illuminating strategies that can lessen associated …

Factors Associated With Health Decision-Making Autonomy On Own Healthcare Among Tanzanian Women: A 2022–2023 Demographic Health Survey Study, Tausi Seleman Haruna, Henry Ofori Duah, Rebecca Lee Jan 2025

Factors Associated With Health Decision-Making Autonomy On Own Healthcare Among Tanzanian Women: A 2022–2023 Demographic Health Survey Study, Tausi Seleman Haruna, Henry Ofori Duah, Rebecca Lee

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Women’s health decision-making autonomy is fundamental for the health and well-being of women and their children. It empowers women to make health decisions and exercise their rights and choices surrounding their health. Like most parts of Africa, women’s autonomy in Tanzania remains contentious, with an estimated 19% prevalence of health decision-making autonomy in 2015. Given the impact of women’s health decision-making autonomy on women’s health outcomes and the fact that women’s health decision-making autonomy is an ongoing process affected by advancements in technology, economic growth, and social and cultural shifts, understanding the sociodemographic correlates of women’s autonomy is imperative. …

Resilience As Accusation: A Critical Examination Of Individual Resilience Training For Burnout Mitigation, Jacqueline Christianson, Bonnie Sommers-Olson, Jessica Leiberg, Dana Kaminstein

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Burnout, a syndrome of work-related exhaustion and cynicism, is prevalent among nurses and is associated with workplace stressors. Resilience training programs are a prevalent method of burnout mitigation employed by healthcare institutions that aim to improve or alter how individuals respond to chronic stressors. Through the lens of General Systems Theory, we describe resilience training as a method of individualizing a systemic problem by problematizing a response to chronic stress exposure. Resilience training may furthermore serve as a mechanism which allows subversion of institutional responsibility for nurses’ well-being in the workplace. We describe several suggestions for nurses to resist being …

Exploring The Sociocultural Significance Of Funerals In Zongo Communities In Less-Developed Countries: A Case Of Effiakuma Zongo In The Western Region Of Ghana, Fusheini Halawayhi, Victor Fannam Nunfam

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Social and cultural capital have been recognized as critical assets for improving nations under the Sustainable Development Goals.
