The Social And Political Identities Of Latine Republicans In The U.S., Gabriella M. Mota
The Social And Political Identities Of Latine Republicans In The U.S., Gabriella M. Mota
Dissertations and Theses
Between the 2016 and 2024 presidential elections, support for Republican candidate Donald Trump among Latine voters increased from 29% to 42%. This rise has attracted interest given Trump's nativist rhetoric and policies that target Latine immigrants. Previous literature has examined the growing Republican partisanship among Latine Americans, focusing on the processes of assimilation and the effects of racial ideology on the partisanship of the Latine electorate. Although this research is gaining traction, the political attitudes of Latine Republicans remain understudied. This study explores how Latine Republicans manipulate ethnoracial attachments to justify their support for Donald Trump and the Republican Party. …

Association Between Area Deprivation Index And Outcomes After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, Michelle Chung, Zhirui Deng, Dianxu Ren, Kelly Isola, Elizabeth Crago
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a life-threatening hemorrhagic stroke caused by bleeding in the arachnoid space of the brain, often resulting in long-term disabilities and poor quality of life (QOL). Individuals living in more advantaged neighborhoods report higher levels of QOL post-stroke, but little has been reported about QOL and neighborhood data after SAH.
This study sought to examine the relationship between measures of socioeconomic status (SES) and outcomes after SAH. SES encompasses a variety of factors. For this analysis, the area deprivation index (ADI) - a measurement of neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage - was used as a surrogate for SES. We …

Adapting To Southwest Idaho's Shifting Wildfire Regime: Sustainable Collaboration As A Means To Socioecological Resilience, Olivia Awbrey
Adapting To Southwest Idaho's Shifting Wildfire Regime: Sustainable Collaboration As A Means To Socioecological Resilience, Olivia Awbrey
Dissertations and Theses
Community wildfire adaptation is happening at multiple scales across the western United States. A range of collaboratively formed groups have addressed compounding issues related to wildfire risk, forest health and land use. In Southwestern Idaho, place-based collaboratives emerging in the early 2000s have considered trade-offs between localized social and ecological needs as they approach wildfire adaptation from the bottom-up. More recently, regional partnerships have emerged that emphasize cross-boundary wildfire risk reduction to cover larger geographic areas for risk mitigation. In between these micro- and macro-scales of activity exist bridging agencies such as county and state-level programs that account for gaps …

The Illusion Of Internal Models In Biological Movement, Madhur Mangalam
The Illusion Of Internal Models In Biological Movement, Madhur Mangalam
Journal Articles
The concept of internal models dominates contemporary theories of sensorimotor control, with researchers across neurosciences, specifically motor control, routinely explaining observed behaviors through computational representations that supposedly exist within the nervous system. In this perspective, I present a critical examination of internal model frameworks in sensorimotor control. I argue that representational approaches mischaracterize biological systems for several fundamental reasons: (1) Internal models require homuncular interpreters, creating infinite regress problems; (2) The purported neural implementations of internal models remain empirically elusive despite decades of research; (3) Biological movement systems exhibit multiscale, nonlinear, and non-Gaussian dynamics that fundamentally defy reduction to conventional …

Entanglement-Assisted Metrology Under Spatiotemporally Correlated Quantum Noise, Francisco U. Riberi
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Quantum sensors operating at the microscale are an emerging branch of quantum technologies where tangible experimental successes have already been reported. State-of-the-art atomic interferometers allow to measure and estimate a variety of physical parameters with unprecedented precision. In principle, exploiting the full power of quantum mechanics would lead to quantitatively better performance bounds over the best possible classical strategies under the same given set of resource constraints. However, the quantum systems' fragility to external disturbances has so far hindered most of these gains to be reached in practice, particularly in the limit of large probe number $N$. Parallel, {\em purely …

BACKGROUND: Opioid use and misuse during pregnancy rose from 1.5 to 6.5 per 1000 deliveries between 1999 and 2014 and continues as a significant public health concern. A fivefold increase in neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) has accompanied the increase in opioid use. The Eating, Sleeping, Consoling care approach (ESC) has been shown to improve outcomes for infants with NOWS and is quickly becoming the standard of care for infants affected by opioid use disorder. Quality improvement initiatives following the implementation of ESC provide some evidence to suggest that symptom-based (i.e., as needed, PRN, just in time) dosing of opioid …

Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Modeling For Bio-Inspired Aerodynamic Optimization In Autonomous Drones, Hyginus C.O. Unegbu, Danjuma Saleh Yawas
Makara Journal of Technology
This study explores the aerodynamic benefits of bio-inspired design modifications for autonomous drones using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Four bio-inspired configurations—leading-edge serrations, winglets, riblet surfaces, and curved wings—were assessed and compared against a baseline drone model to evaluate their impact on aerodynamic performance. The results indicated that all bio-inspired designs significantly enhanced lift, reduced drag, and improved overall aerodynamic efficiency. The leading-edge serration configuration achieved the highest performance gains, with a 33.6% increase in maximum lift coefficient (CL) and a 29.5% improvement in lift-to-drag ratio (CL/CD), primarily due to delayed flow separation and reduced turbulence. Winglets minimized wingtip …

Topological Indices And Quantitative Structure-Property Analysis Of Novel Drugs For Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Treatment, P. Nathiya, M. Suresh, Jalal Hatem Hussein Bayati
Baghdad Science Journal
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children is a bone marrow and blood cancer. Healthy blood cells begin to change and grow out of control when leukemia initially occurs. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is an immune system-related malignancy of the lymphocytes, a subtype of white blood cells. The most common form of cancer affecting children is ALL. In this work, the topological indices are derived from the structure of a chemical graph, and predict the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of several anticancer drugs. ALL are usually treated with drugs such as methotrexate, 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), vincristine, L-asparaginase, and/or prednisone, etc., which are …

Baghdad Science Journal
In the diagnosis of skin cancer, dermoscopy images have to be evaluated for feature extraction. In this paper, the authors design a new method to enhance the skin dermoscopy image segmentation accuracy by eliminating artifacts and hair using photometric quasi-invariants, followed by a unique approach for skin lesion segmentation using histogram-based feature fusion. Histogram features are used to extract data range and mean images from the histogram, and these are fused with the free artifacts and hair image to generate the final image. the authors used the PH2 dataset for the proposed segmentation method because it contains the ground truth …

Explaining Time Series Classifiers Through Post-Hoc Xai Methods Capturing Temporal Dependencies, Ephrem Tibebe Mekonnen
Conference papers
Time series classification is essential in domains such as healthcare and finance, where accurate predictions can have significant real-world consequences. However, in many high-stakes applications, understanding why a model makes a certain decision is just as important as the prediction itself. While deep learning models excel at capturing complex temporal patterns, their black-box nature limits transparency, making it difficult to trust and interpret their decisions. Although eXplainable AI (XAI) methods have advanced considerably for image and tabular data, applying them to time series remains challenging due to the intricate temporal dependencies and high dimensionality of the data. Post-hoc model-agnostic XAI …

Phospholipase C isozymes (PLCs) hydrolyze phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) into inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG), important signaling molecules involved in many cellular processes including Ca2+ release from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). PLCG1 encodes the PLCγ1 isozyme that is broadly expressed. Hyperactive somatic mutations of PLCG1 are observed in multiple cancers, but only one germline variant has been reported. Here, we describe seven individuals with heterozygous missense variants in PLCG1 [p.(Asp1019Gly), p.(His380Arg), p.(Asp1165Gly), and p.(Leu597Phe)] who present with hearing impairment (5/7), ocular pathology (4/7), cardiac septal defects (3/6), and various immunological issues (5/7). Introduction: Research indicates a strong correlation between obesity and the risk of dementia, both are linked to steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1), a transcriptional coactivator.
Methods: We used RNA sequencing analysis (RNA-Seq) to investigate the transcriptome of SRC-1-KO mice, and identified S100 calcium-binding protein A6 (S100A6), an AD associated gene, as one target of SRC-1. We tested cognitive behaviors in SRC-1-KO mice and mice with a humanized SRC-1 mutation (SRC-1L1376P), and performed promoter luciferase assays on S100A6.
Results: Loss of SRC-1 caused alterations in gene signatures that are commonly associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including AD, and diminished the neural plasticity of …

Neurofibromin/NF1 is a RAS (rat sarcoma virus) GTPase activating protein and estrogen receptor (ER) transcriptional corepressor. NF1low status, identified by copy number loss or low mRNA/protein expression is associated with endocrine therapy resistance in approximately 20% of ER+/HER2− (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) early-stage breast cancers. The identification of targeted treatments for NF1low ER+/HER2− breast cancer is therefore a priority. In this study proteogenomic analysis of ER+/HER2− breast cancer demonstrated that NF1low tumors exhibited elevated cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) activity. In cell lines, NF1-deletion had a dual effect on CDK4 activity. First, by promoting ER recruitment to CCND1 …

AUIQ Complementary Biological System
This work investigates the efficacy of fenugreek seed powder (FSP), an agricultural product, as an economical and sustainable biosorbent for the extraction of crystal violet (CV) dye from aqueous environments. The biosorbent was analyzed using XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDX, validating its amorphous structure, surface functional groups, and porous shape. Batch biosorption tests were adjusted utilizing a Box–Behnken design (BBD), incorporating three independent variables: FSP dose (0.02–0.1 g/100 mL), pH (4–10), and time (5–60 min). The model exhibited exceptional prediction accuracy (R² = 0.99, CV = 2.12%) and recognized all three variables as statistically significant (p < 0.05). The maximum CV removal attained was 91.8% efficiency at an FSP dose of 0.1 g/100 mL, pH 7, and a time of 60 minutes. FTIR examination indicated changes in the –OH, C=O, and C–O functional groups, signifying their participation in dye interaction, whilst SEM pictures validated dye deposition on the biosorbent surface. The biosorption process was ascribed to electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and pore filling. These findings underscore FSP as a viable, economical biosorbent for the removal of cationic dyes in wastewater treatment applications.

Three Intermediate Bronze Age wicks discovered in the Newe Efrayim cemetery constitute some of the earliest known archaeological evidence of wick use, an essential object for lighting, yet lacking distinctive features, as it was intended to be burned, making it a rare find. The exceptional preservation of the wicks sheds light on both preservation issues and the technological aspects of wick production in antiquity. The wicks were made from textiles, indicating the maximal reuse of a valuable raw material after it had served its original purpose. These finds offer evidence of material recycling in the ancient world. It is likely …
