Inflammation And Detection: Rethinking The Biomarker Landscape In Gastric Cancer, Keykavous Parang, Koosha Paydary
Inflammation And Detection: Rethinking The Biomarker Landscape In Gastric Cancer, Keykavous Parang, Koosha Paydary
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Gastric carcinoma is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, yet reliable noninvasive biomarkers for its early detection remain limited. As research continues to elucidate the inflammatory underpinnings of tumor initiation and progression, it has become increasingly clear that pro-inflammatory cytokines may hold promise as diagnostic adjuncts. Serum cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and interferon-gamma have been frequently reported as elevated in gastric cancer patients compared to healthy individuals. These molecules, known for their roles in modulating tumor-promoting inflammation, angiogenesis, and immune evasion, may serve as accessible indicators of disease presence or progression. Several studies have shown that …

Beyond Mechanistic Control: Causal Decision Processing In Neuromorphic Military Artificial Intelligence, James Giordano
Beyond Mechanistic Control: Causal Decision Processing In Neuromorphic Military Artificial Intelligence, James Giordano
Commentary
This article explains how neuromorphic artificial intelligence (AI), AI designed to mimic brain-like reasoning, differs from traditional rule-based systems and what that means for military decision-making. Unlike mechanistic AI that reacts predictably to inputs, neuromorphic AI integrates data and context more like the human brain, allowing adaptive responses in complex environments. While this could improve how autonomous systems operate in uncertain conflict zones, it also raises new questions about control, predictability, accountability, and ethical use. The author argues that integrating such systems into defense operations must be guided by clear oversight, doctrine, and ethical frameworks to ensure effectiveness, safety, and …

Snow Avalanches And The Impact Of Climate‐Linked Extreme Events On Mountain Wildlife Population Dynamics And Resilience, Kevin S. White, Taal Levi, Eran Hood, Chris T. Darimont
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Climate is changing rapidly in mountain environments, giving rise to increasing variability in weather, incidence of extremeevents, and alteration of the cryosphere. Natural hazards, such as snow avalanches, and the ecological communities they impactmay be particularly sensitive to such change. While avalanches may impose both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ effects on mountain ecosys-tems, the direct impacts that lead to mortality have particularly important implications for future viability and resilience ofslow-growing alpine wildlife populations. Here, we studied a sentinel species of coastal Alaskan mountain environments—themountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) – using long-term field data from individually marked animals (600 individuals over44 years) in …

Exploring Lived Experiences And Perceptions Of Individuals With Substance-Use Disorder Recovery Management From A Biopsychosocial Perspective, Robin Carter Priest
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Substance-use disorder (SUD) poses significant biological, psychological, and sociological impacts that negatively affect areas of employment, health, family systems, and interactions with social welfare and legal agencies. Although there has been research on SUD treatment, relapse rates remain high at approximately 40%–75%, demonstrating a gap in the literature involving individuals who completed SUD treatment and continuation or management of recovery. Grounded in phenomenological theory and through a biopsychosocial lens, this qualitative study explored the lived experiences and perceptions of individuals with substance-use disorder managing their recovery. Data were collected from 8 individuals who completed partial hospitalization or intensive-outpatient levels of …
Fathers’ Lived Experiences After Their Children Experienced Child Sexual Abuse, Joan Michelle Lucien
Fathers’ Lived Experiences After Their Children Experienced Child Sexual Abuse, Joan Michelle Lucien
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global health crisis with deleterious consequences that violates children’s safety worldwide. Exact rates of CSA prevalence vary, as most cases of CSA are not disclosed. Survivors delayed or nondisclosure impedes early interventions to alleviate documented adverse effects of CSA. CSA survivors have an increased risk of suicidal ideation. This phenomenological study involved examining the lived experiences of adult fathers after their children experienced CSA. Finkelhor and Browne’s traumagenic dynamics framework guided this study. Traumagenic dynamics influence children’s cognitive and emotional functioning and distort their self-esteem, identity, worldview, and affective capacities. Stigmatization has been associated …

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of myopia on regional visual field (VF) loss and progression in glaucoma.
METHODS: We included 112,633 24-2 VFs; longitudinal analyses comprised patients with at least 5 reliable VFs over 4 years. The degree of myopia was measured by spherical equivalent (SE) extracted from VF testing. Linear and Cox regressions determined the impact of myopia on regional VF loss and progression, respectively. We calculated three VF progression outcomes: (1) mean deviation (MD) progression: MD slope < 0; (2) total deviation (TD) pointwise progression: at least 3 TD locations with TD slope ≤-1 decibels (dB)/year; (3) MD fast progression: MD slope ≤-1 dB/year (P value < 0.05). Longitudinal analyses were conducted for all subjects and with exclusion of patients with high myopia (SE ≤-6.00 diopters [D]).
RESULTS: More negative SE values were associated with worse TD values in the paracentral VF …

Beyond Mechanistic Control: Causal Decision Processing In Neuromorphic Military Artificial Intelligence, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
This commentary explores how neuromorphic artificial intelligence, AI designed to mimic the causal and adaptive processing of the human brain, differs from traditional mechanistic systems and what this means for military applications. Traditional AI follows straightforward stimulus-response patterns that work well in predictable scenarios, but they struggle in complex, dynamic environments. Neuromorphic AI uses more human-like causal processing, integrating multiple streams of data and contextual cues to make decisions that better adapt to ambiguity and uncertainty. While this offers potential advantages in autonomy and operational flexibility, it also raises challenges for predictability, command and control, verification, and accountability. The article …

Effective environmental monitoring is critical for preventing microbial and allergenic cross-contamination. However, manual swabbing methods, commonly used to verify hygienic conditions, are prone to inconsistent results because of variability in pressure, coverage, and techniques. Two novel solutions will be explored to address these challenges: a robotic swabbing system with tactile sensing control, and a fluorescence/absorbance spectrometer for non-contact, protein-based residue detection. The robotic system was evaluated against trained and untrained humans, measuring water pickup, surface coverage, and pressure consistency. Concurrently, the fluorescence system analyzed model poultry protein soil to correlate spectral patterns with contamination levels. The robotic system demonstrated statistically …

An Updated Checklist Of The Mammals Of Türkiye, Mustafa Sözen, Faruk Çolak
An Updated Checklist Of The Mammals Of Türkiye, Mustafa Sözen, Faruk Çolak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Between 1982 and 2025, the number of extant wild mammal species worldwide rose from 4170 to 6706. The Turkish mammal fauna also showed a similar trend, with the number of mammal species listed for Türkiye rising from 89 to 173 in just 33 years, from 1989 to 2021. A shift in species numbers like this calls for regular updates to Türkiye’s mammal species lists as well as the preparation of new checklists. Apart from changes in the number of species, numerous taxonomic changes and rearrangements also lead to changes in mammal lists. We arranged an updated mammal checklist by reviewing …

We report a rapid aqueous method for synthesizing monodisperse gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), employing 2-propynylamine as both an intrinsic reducing agent and a surface-stabilizing ligand. This self-mediated process—achieved in a single step—yields spherical AuNPs with an average diameter of 4.0 ± 1.0 nm and a well-defined localized surface plasmon resonance band centered at 520 nm. Acting as a bifunctional molecule, 2-propynylamine simultaneously reduces HAuCl4·3H2O to elemental gold and passivates the nanoparticle surface through coordination via the amine group, while preserving a terminal alkyne (–C≡CH) functionality. This reactive moiety remains exposed and chemically accessible, enabling post-synthetic modification through Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition. Control …
