Cocaine is a widely used human recreational substance routinely transferring at pharmacologically irrelevant trace level amounts to non-user humans and horses. Horses and humans rapidly demethylate cocaine to benzoylecgonine which is excreted in urine at concentrations approaching two thousand times higher than the corresponding plasma cocaine concentrations. In human workplace drug testing, these usually pharmacologically irrelevant trace level urinary detections of benzoylecgonine are handled by application of a 100 ng/ml urinary “cut-off“, as presented by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In horse racing several American states have long used published urinary “cut-offs“ for benzoylecgonine of from …

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) disproportionately affects Hispanic persons with higher age-specific incidence and increased mortality rates compared to non-Hispanic Whites. These high rates of incidence and mortality may be explained by the variation in risk factors. Given the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) among the Hispanic population, we aimed to assess the risk and prognosis of HCC in Mexican Americans with type 2 DM with consideration of treatment for DM.
METHODS: A case-control study of 241 Mexican American HCC patients and 500 healthy controls in Texas was conducted. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the …

The mammary microenvironment has been shown to suppress tumor progression by redirecting cancer cells to adopt a normal mammary epithelial progenitor fate in vivo. However, the mechanism(s) by which this alteration occurs has yet to be defined. Here, we test the hypothesis that mitochondrial transfer from normal mammary epithelial cells to breast cancer cells plays a role in this redirection process. We evaluate mitochondrial transfer in 2D and 3D organoids using our unique 3D bioprinting system to produce chimeric organoids containing normal and cancer cells. We demonstrate that breast cancer tumoroid growth is hindered following interaction with mammary epithelial cells …

Introduction: Secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure remains a major public health concern for children and has been implicated in sleep disturbances through biological and behavioral mechanisms. Different methods of measuring SHS exposure have yielded inconsistent results. This study examined the relationship between SHS exposure and sleep among rural Appalachian 7–9-year-olds, utilizing three SHS measurements: natural log-transformed (ln) serum cotinine concentrations, dichotomized serum cotinine levels (≥0.05 vs. <0.05 ng/ml), and parent/caregiver report of ≥1 smoker in the home. We hypothesized SHS-exposed children would have a significantly higher prevalence of sleep disturbance—e.g., short sleep, frequent snoring, night awakenings—compared to unexposed, regardless of measurement method. Methods: We used data from the Marietta Community Actively Researching Exposure Study, a cohort of 404 children in Marietta and Cambridge, Ohio. Sleep disturbances were parent/caregiver-reported. Linear models were used for continuous outcomes to estimate beta coefficients; log-binomial models with generalized estimating equations (exchangeable correlation) were applied for dichotomized outcomes to estimate prevalence ratios (PR), each with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Twenty-six percent of children had a parent/caregiver report of ≥1 sleep disturbance. There was a 35% increased prevalence of short sleep [PR = 1.35 (95%CI:1.02–1.80), p =.04] with each unit increase of ln serum cotinine levels, adjusting for age, sex, parent education, BMI percentile, and history of breathing difficulties in the past two years. Increasing ln serum cotinine levels were associated with a significant 5.5-min decrease in average sleep duration in age-adjusted models. Conclusions: Higher SHS exposure was associated with poorer sleep outcomes, with serum cotinine emerging as the only measure linked to short sleep, underscoring the importance of smoke-free environments, particularly in rural communities, and objective exposure assessment.

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background
Primary prevention of stroke using oral anticoagulants (OACs) is indicated for clinical atrial fibrillation (AF) documented on standard electrocardiogram (ECG) in those patients with a high risk of stroke. The recent availability of both external ECG monitors (either using consumer electronic or medical devices) and implantable devices have enabled earlier AF episodes to be detected before clinical AF become manifest. These episodes, often termed subclinical AF (SCAF), represent an area of controversy for the application of OAC.
Objective
The present review summarises the management of SCAF, based on recent guidelines and publications in the following areas:

The inadequacies of traditional flexible endoscopes used in gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures, causing pain and discomfort to patients, led to the development of the wireless capsule endoscope. There are two types of wireless capsule endoscopes: passive and active. The passive wireless capsule endoscope cannot stop at a specific position for diagnostic purposes, which can lead to capsule retention. The active capsule can solve those problems. In this article, we use COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate a two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetic actuation (EMA) system for active wireless capsule endoscope. The EMA system uses a stationary two-pair coil system (Helmholtz and Maxwell). The capsule endoscope …

Complex Plant Disease Syndromes Induced By Plant Parasitic Nematodes And Phytopathogenic Bacteria: Interactions, Mechanisms And Management, Atef M. El-Sagheer, Eman A. Hammad, Radwa G. Mostafa
Trends in advanced sciences and technology
Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are among the most significant agents contributing to plant disease complexes, acting both as direct parasites and as facilitators of bacterial infections. Their interactions with phytopathogenic bacteria are multifaceted, involving mechanical wounding caused by stylet penetration, disruption of plant cell integrity, and alteration of host physiology. These changes create favourable conditions for bacterial entry, colonization, and systemic spread. Additionally, PPNs can suppress plant defines responses and modify root exudate profiles, thereby enhancing bacterial survival and virulence in the rhizosphere. Such interactions often lead to a synergistic increase in disease incidence and severity, resulting in greater yield losses …

Genetic Mutations Affecting Dentin Formation: Molecular Insights And Therapeutic Strategies, Mohamed Yehia Abdelfattah, Yara Sameh Said, Shimaa A. Elsaady, Shahenda A. Abdallahahmed, Wael Abou-Zeid
Trends in advanced sciences and technology
Writing a comprehensive review on gene mutations affecting dentin mineralization requires thorough research and organization, as each section examines how specific mutations influence this process, supported by relevant findings. Mutations in genes such as DSPP, DMP1, andMEPE impair dentin structure and mineralization by disrupting odontoblast function, dentin matrix integrity, and mineral deposition. These genetic alterations interfere with key biological processes, including odontoblast differentiation and matrix formation, through altered signaling pathways such as Wnt/β- catenin and TGF-β, contributing to dental disorders like Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI). Gaining molecular insights into these disruptions enhances our understanding of dentin biology and supports early diagnosis, …

Supporting Second-Year College Students In The Murky Middle, Alisha L. Kimble
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study articulates the needs and expectations of an intersectional population of undergraduate college students: second-year students in the murky middle. Nearly half of all student dropouts occur after the first year of enrollment, with more than 45% occurring by mid-performing students. Despite this, institutions, like researchers, do not readily focus on the retention of this population of students; a Noel Levitz study (2013) found a disparity in the prevalence of retention practices for first-year students (94%-98%) and second-year students (20%-29%). This general qualitative study utilized a semi-structured interview protocol with nine participants to gather information about the participants’ needs …
The Development Of A Children’S Book Designed To Use Bibliotherapy And Mindfulness Skills To Promote Interoception In Young Children With Insecure Attachment As A Result Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Zenaida Agramonte
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
One third of children in the United States have experienced trauma known in the literature as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The long-term outcomes of ACEs have a higher likelihood of reducing interoceptive awareness—the ability to sense internal body signals like heart rate, hunger, pain, and emotions. Research suggests that interventions, such as mindfulness and attachment therapies are useful for increasing interoceptive awareness, regulating emotions, and fostering secure attachment in adults. However, apart from attachment, interventions are lacking for young children. Bibliotherapy is one such intervention designed for young children which potentially fosters secure attachment between child and adult storytellers and …

Evaluation Of The Maneuverability Of An 85m Fishing Trawler (Focusing On Dynamic Stability), Chun-Ki Lee, Su-Hyung Kim
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Most fishing vessels are less than 100 meters in length, so IMO maneuverability standards do not apply. As a result, studies on the maneuverability of fishing vessels are considerably fewer compared to those on merchant ships. However, with technological advancements, the size of fishing vessels continues to grow, and as more fishermen are on board, accidents could lead to fatal casualties. In response, the authors determined that research on the maneuverability of fishing vessels is urgently needed. Thus, the authors conducted a maneuverability evaluation on a fisheries training vessel with the hull shape of a fishing trawler, 85 meters in …

A Hybrid Image Filtering Approach For Improving Edge Detection Of Riverbed Particles With Complex Textures, Po-Wei Lin, Hsun-Chuan Chan
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The distribution of particle size in gravel-bed rivers affects the flow condition, sediment transport, and river morphology. However, conventional particle size analysis is laborious and time-consuming. To enhance the efficiency of particle size analysis, image-based methods have been widely explored, but complex particle textures increase the difficulty in identifying particle edges during image analysis. This study develops a filtering approach based on the rolling guidance filter and leverages the differences in grayscale gradients between particle edges and textures to design a guidance image tailored for the rolling guidance filter. This design enables the filter to preserve particle edges while smoothing …

Student Posters
An estimated 20 million people globally develop cancer every year. Furthermore, over 9.7 million people die from cancer. The best prognosis of cancer occurs when detected early. Cancer, in its early stages, usually does not display clinical symptoms and is usually not detectable by symptoms and is diagnosed later. The goal of the D.A.C.S. is to provide a screen that can detect cancer. It is hypothesized that developing a cancer detection system/technology, named D.A.C.S. (Detection of Advanced Cancer Screening) system, can help with early cancer detection, while still being affordable for the general public.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that poses significant challenges in clinical treatment due to its production of collagenase. This bacterium can cause several infections including pneumonia, meningitis, septicemia, and a host of other diseases. Collagenase acts as a key virulence factor by breaking down collagen in the host’s extracellular matrix, allowing bacteria to invade tissues. This study hypothesized that the effects of cell secreted collagenase would be inhibited by metronidazole, vanillin, and silver nanoparticles to reduce the pathogenicity of Ps. aeruginosa related infections.

C1s enzyme plays a crucial role in the immune system so that the body can fight infection and repair damaged tissues. However, if it is not working properly, it will do more harm than good. This is shown in the case of periodontal Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (pEDS), a rare genetic disorder whereby C1s breaks down collagen I, a protein that gives structure and strength to connective tissues. Severe gum disease, loose teeth and premature teeth is a result of this. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the pathogenicity of C1s mutations and association in pEDS.

Two independent experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of dietary fat sources and vitamin E supplementation on the characteristics of belly and bacon from heavy slaughter weights (150 kg) pigs. In experiment 1, 64 individually fed pigs (32 barrows and 32 gilts) were randomly assigned to 1 of the 8 dietary treatments in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement. Four fat sources included cornstarch (CS), tallow (TW), corn oil (CO), and coconut oil (CN). Vitamin E supplementation included alpha-tocopheryl acetate (ATA) at 11 and 200 ppm. In experiment 2, individually fed pigs (n = 72; 36 barrows, 36 gilts) …

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementing α-tocopheryl-acetate (ATA) and γ-tocopherol (GT) vitamin E isoforms with corn oil (CO) and tallow (TW) on carcass characteristics and meat quality characteristics of pigs grown to heavy weights (150 kg). Individually fed pigs (n = 72; 36 barrows, 36 gilts) were randomly assigned to 12 dietary treatments in a 2 × 6 factorial arrangement. Fat treatments were 5% TW and 5% CO. The vitamin E treatments included 4 levels of ATA (11, 40, 100, and 200 ppm) and 2 levels of mixed tocopherols (primarily GT; 40 and 100 …

Beef whole-muscle cuts containing biceps femoris (BF) exhibit inferior tenderness compared to cuts from the ribs and loins. The BF is a sizeable muscle in beef round, and enhancing tenderness of BF may increase the value of beef carcasses. While wet aging for 21 d improves beef tenderness, it can compromise color. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of wet aging on color and tenderness of beef BF to identify an optimal aging duration for these quality traits. The BF muscles were collected 24 h postmortem from 8 beef carcasses (n = 8), divided into equal sections, vacuum packaged, and aged …
