Beef whole-muscle cuts containing biceps femoris (BF) exhibit inferior tenderness compared to cuts from the ribs and loins. The BF is a sizeable muscle in beef round, and enhancing tenderness of BF may increase the value of beef carcasses. While wet aging for 21 d improves beef tenderness, it can compromise color. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of wet aging on color and tenderness of beef BF to identify an optimal aging duration for these quality traits. The BF muscles were collected 24 h postmortem from 8 beef carcasses (n = 8), divided into equal sections, vacuum packaged, and aged …
Automated Sponge Segmentation With Mask R-Cnn On Arms Plate Images For Reef Monitoring, Mrunali Abhijit Thokadiwala
Automated Sponge Segmentation With Mask R-Cnn On Arms Plate Images For Reef Monitoring, Mrunali Abhijit Thokadiwala
Master's Projects
Climate change-driven ocean warming and acidification are disrupting the ecological balance of coral reefs. Notably, these oceanic conditions are undermining coral health and accelerating their decline which is favoring some sponge species in outcompeting them for dominance. Although functional, these altered reefs destabilize the reef architecture, hinder nutrient cycling, and support fewer marine species. Thus, monitoring the growth and abundance of various sponges and understanding their roles at different stages of ecological succession in coral reefs is vital. Autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS) are often used for this purpose, but manual taxonomic analysis using their images is time-consuming, inconsistent and …
Evorgcn: Harnessing Esm-2 Evolutionary Embeddings With Relational Gcns For High-Fidelity Protein-Protein Interaction Prediction, Mohit Kunder
Master's Projects
Accurately predicting protein-protein interactions (PPIs) is essential for understanding cellular function and advancing biomedical discovery. We model PPIs as graphs, where nodes represent proteins and edges denote interactions. Using interaction data from the STRING database, we use two samples of it, namely the benchmark datasets—SH27K and SH148K—filtered by confidence score and annotated by interaction mode (multiple relations). In this project, we present EvoRGCN, a graph-based machine learning framework for PPI prediction that integrates both sequence-level (ESM-2 embeddings) and network-level information. We incorporate various Graph Neural Network architectures, including Graph Convolutional Networks, Graph Attention Networks, and Relational Graph Convolutional Networks. Our …

Variations Of Hex Bar Deadlifts On Post-Activation Performance Enhancement In Collegiate Baseball Athletes, Samuel Sanders
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Single-session resistance priming protocols are used by strength and conditioning coaches to acutely improve neuromuscular mechanisms that are beneficial to athletic performance. This study aimed to examine if a concentric-only hex bar deadlift (CHBDL) would produce a similar post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) effect as a full-range-of-motion hex bar deadlift (THBDL) and mitigate perceived measures of fatigue and soreness in collegiate athletes. 19 NCAA Division I baseball athletes completed the study. A repeated measures design with randomized assignment and counterbalanced order was utilized. Over two weeks, the CHBDL and THBDL were added into a typical priming protocol used by the team’s …
Digital Modeling Of Temperature-Dependent Processes In Industrial Wastewater: Advancing Ultimate Oxygen Demand Prediction For Treatment Optimization, Fatima Iqbal
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The pulp and paper industry is the third-largest consumer of freshwater globally and faces mounting pressure to optimize water usage and minimize environmental impact. Aerated stabilization basins are extensively utilized in the pulp and paper industry and play a crucial role in treating wastewater from these operations. The existing management practices fail to effectively optimize treatment processes due to the prolonged time required for testing key quality parameters. The utilization of models developed for treatment facilities presents a viable solution; however, existing open-source models often fall short in accurately predicting treatment efficiency across varying conditions and lack comprehensive accounting of …

Investigating The Role And Expression Of Aquaporin 10 Paralogs In Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias), Esosa Omoregie
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Aquaporins (AQPs) are integral membrane proteins that facilitate the selective transport of water and small solutes across cell membranes, playing essential roles in maintaining osmotic balance in vertebrates. Among them, aquaglyceroporins such as AQP10 are capable of transporting water, glycerol, and urea, contributing to osmoregulatory and metabolic processes. This study investigated the expression, localization, and potential physiological roles of two AQP10 paralogs, AQP10C1 and AQP10C2, in the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), a marine elasmobranch that maintains osmotic equilibrium through urea retention and ion regulation. Using RT-PCR, quantitative PCR, Western blotting and immunohistochemistry the study identified tissue-specific expression patterns of …

Determination Of Structural Factors Contributing To Protection Of Zinc Fingers In Estrogen Receptor Α Through Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Patricia B. Lutz, Wesley R. Coombs, Craig A. Bayse
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The ERα transcription factor that induces tumor growth is a potential target for breast cancer treatment. Each monomer of the ERα DNA-binding domain (ERαDBD) homodimer has two conserved (Cys)4-type zinc fingers, ZF1 (N-terminal) and ZF2 (C-terminal). Electrophilic agents release Zn2+ by oxidizing the coordinating Cys of the more labile ZF2 to inhibit dimerization and DNA binding. Microsecond-length molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show that greater flexibility of ZF2 in the ERαDBD monomer leaves its Cys more solvent accessible and less shielded from electrophilic attack by sulfur-centered hydrogen bonds than ZF1 which is buried in the protein. In the …

The Importance Of Solution Studies For The Structural Characterization Of The Enterovirus 5' Cloverleaf, Morgan G. Daniels, Meagan E. Werner, Xiaobing Zuo, Steven M. Pascal
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Enteroviruses initiate genomic replication via a highly conserved mechanism that is controlled by an RNA platform, also known as the 5' cloverleaf (5'CL). Here, we present a biophysical analysis of the 5'CL conformation of three enterovirus serotypes under various ionic conditions, utilizing CD spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography, and small-angle X-ray scattering. In general, a tendency toward a smaller monomeric hydrodynamic radius in the presence of salts was observed, but the exact structural signature of each 5'CL varied depending upon the serotype. Rhinovirus B14 (RVB14) exhibited at least two monomeric conformations and a low propensity for dimerization, while poliovirus 1 (PV1) showed …

Design And Synthesis Of Organocatalyts For Efficient Decontamination Of Organophosphate-Based Nerve Agents And Pesticides, Emmanuel Kingsley Darkwah
Doctoral Dissertations
Exposure to organophosphate-based nerve agents and pesticides poses significant health and security threats to civilians, soldiers, and first responders. Despite extensive efforts to develop chemical detoxification agents for use in topical applications on exposed skin surfaces and for intravenous injections, there remains an unmet need for effective, non-hazardous decontaminating agents. The current state-of-the-art decontaminating agent, Dekon-139 (2,3-butanedione oxime, potassium salt), exhibits adverse effects when applied to the skin.
In this study, we designed and synthesized pharmaceutically relevant aminoguanidine-derived aldimines that are relatively non-toxic and substantially more effective at decontaminating nerve agents and pesticides compared to existing agents, and they act …

Novel Nano-Formulations Based On Flash Nanoprecipitation For Ocular Drug Delivery, Lin Qi
Doctoral Dissertations
Effective ocular drug delivery has always been a challenge for clinical and research. Although many nanotechnology-based formulations have been developed and showed great potential in ocular drug delivery, this is far from enough to meet clinical requirements. These studies aimed at the design and synthesis of novel nanoparticles using multi-inlet vortex mixer (MIVM) to improve ocular drug delivery efficiency. The first project involves packaging two different anti-glaucoma drugs, brimonidine (BM) and betaxolol (BX), into solid drug nanoparticles (SDNs) by MIVM, which can achieve both functions, reducing aqueous humor production and promoting aqueous humor efflux. The studies demonstrate that the SDNs …

Topics On Ai Fairness Preferences In Kidney Transplantation, Mukund Telukunta
Doctoral Dissertations
Modern kidney transplantation incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) decision-support systems which exhibit social discrimination due to biases inherited from training data. Although researchers have proposed various group-based fairness notions to assess biases in AI, it remains uncertain which criterion is most suitable for evaluating biases in such complex healthcare systems. This dissertation explores human perception of fairness to identify the most appropriate fairness criterion for assessing AI tools in kidney transplantation, focusing on the preferences of non-expert (e.g. public, patients) stakeholders. The study examines two distinct AI systems employed in kidney transplantation: a classification model and a regression model. Human subject …

Doctoral Dissertations
This research presents a novel Frequency Domain Transmitometry (FDT) method that uses transmitted signals (S21) to detect and characterize aircraft data transmission lines (ADTL) corrosion damage without additional reflectometry circuitry. Corrosion experiments were conducted according to ASTM G85-A5 over 14 weeks. Combined FDT and reflected signals (S11) analyses revealed distinct three-peak signatures associated with damage and corrosion. The square root of the Area Under the Curve (AUC) of the FDT damage peak and the Full Width at Three-Quarter Maximum (FW3QM) of the S11 damage peak is correlated with corrosion propagation depth and width. S11 signals were further used for vibration …
An Investigation Into How The Prostate And Androgens Mediate Greater Levels Of Uric Acid In Males Compared To Females, Rachel D. King
An Investigation Into How The Prostate And Androgens Mediate Greater Levels Of Uric Acid In Males Compared To Females, Rachel D. King
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic elevated circulating uric acid (UA) levels (hyperuricemia) are associated with gout as well as cardiovascular, metabolic, and renal dysfunction. Men have greater mean circulating UA levels than women and are more likely to exhibit hyperuricemia. This may be partly driven by the hormonal regulation of renal UA transporters; however, a direct link between hormones and UA production has not been established. Production of UA is catalyzed by xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR / XDH), which is ubiquitously expressed but has the greatest specific activity in the liver. Interestingly, an extensive gout genome-wide association study (GWAS) recently revealed a robust genetic …

Back To The Future Self: Parsing Age Effects In Future Self-Continuity Through Goal Orientation And Life Satisfaction, Laken A. Mooney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Future self-continuity, the psychological feeling of connectedness between the current and the future self, is a relatively novel concept that is associated with and has been used to predict a variety of outcomes. Though work investigating individual differences is comparatively rare, a robust demographic difference found in previous literature is the presence of an age effect, where older adults are more likely to feel a greater connection to their future self than younger adults. This finding has been replicated a number of times, but potential mechanisms behind this observed age-related increase have yet to be fully uncovered. Limited previous work …

While not a normal part of aging, depression is a concerning psychiatric condition in late life. Depression is a significant predictor of suicide and the highest rates of suicide occur in middle aged and older adult men. One factor that may protect against depression and suicidal behavior among older adults is social support. Social support has been demonstrated as a significant factor in health and well-being. Perceived social support has consistently been linked to beneficial outcomes, however, received support has mixed results with some studies even finding received support to be harmful. For individuals who highly value autonomy, it may …

Engineering Extracellular Vesicles (Evs) To Combat Infection And Inflammation In Cystic Fibrosis, Sharanya Sarkar
Engineering Extracellular Vesicles (Evs) To Combat Infection And Inflammation In Cystic Fibrosis, Sharanya Sarkar
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a multisystemic genetic disorder caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, resulting in chronic pulmonary infections, hyperinflammation, and progressive lung damage. Among the pathogens that colonize CF lungs, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is predominant, infecting over 50% of adults with CF and developing antibiotic resistance over time. Current modulator therapies fail to address persistent bacterial infections, chronic inflammation, or irreversible lung damage, underscoring the need for novel therapeutic strategies. In our previous in vitro studies, we demonstrated that extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells (HBECs) inhibit P. aeruginosa growth by reducing the …

Delayed Tooth Eruption As An Early Clinical Indicator Of Genetical Tooth Agenesis: A Family-Based Study Of Cases With Whole-Exome Sequencing, Yu-Chen Jeng, I-Ting Chen, Hui-Ching Cheng, Hsin-Yu Huang, Chao-Kai Hsu, Yu-Fen Yen
Journal of Dental Sciences
Delayed tooth eruption is frequently considered a benign developmental variation but may represent an early sign of genetically driven tooth agenesis. We evaluated a 22-month-old female presenting with markedly delayed eruption (only eight primary teeth) and a positive family history of ectodermal features. Given the inconclusive early radiographic findings, whole-exome sequencing (WES) was utilized. WES revealed the proband carried a heterozygous EDARADD variant (NM_080738:c.328G>T; p.Asp110Tyr). Subsequent familial segregation analysis identified an additional heterozygous WNT10A variant (NM_025216:c.637G>A; p.Gly213Ser) within the broader family. The EDARADD variant alone was associated with varying presentations from normal dentition to delayed eruption. Furthermore, the …

Development Of An Enantioselective Synthesis Of (–)-Euonyminol And Studies Towards The Total Synthesis Of (–)-Lomaiviticin A, Zhi Xu
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In the first chapter, I describe the development of the first enantioselective synthesis of (–)-euonyminol (1), a heavily oxidized sesquiterpenoid. Structurally, (–)-euonyminol (1) features a tricyclic framework containing an all-carbon quaternary center and nine free hydroxyl groups. Following the initial failed attempts to achieve a semi-pinacol rearrangement of an allylic silyl ether, we developed a novel oxyalkylation reaction to establish the C10 quaternary center of 1. From this intermediate, we investigated three distinct strategies to construct the tricyclic framework of 1 employing a reductive cyclization, an aldol–dehydration sequence, and a radical cyclization reaction, respectively. Finally, a series of stereoselective transformations …

'Typical Cases': Representation, Racializing Medicine, And The Politics Of The Case Study In The Moulages Collections Of The Hôpital Saint-Louis, Kathleen Pierce
Art: Faculty Publications
Physicians at the hôpital Saint-Louis prized their collection of wax models (moulages) for their precise representation of color: a central project of dermatology. Close looking at the collection, however, reveals the repeated use of a consistent light skin tone across the vast majority of models. Given physicians’ investment in chromatic precision, how might we understand this generic attention to skin coloration? “Typical Cases” asks how, when, and why skin pigmentation mattered to fin-de-siècle dermatologists. I first argue that the overrepresentation of light skin tones comprises an aesthetic choice made by the model-makers and their physician-patrons. I subsequently ask how this …
