While all native tRNAs undergo extensive post-transcriptional modifications as a mechanism to regulate gene expression, mapping these modifications remains challenging. The critical barrier is the difficulty of readthrough of modifications by reverse transcriptases (RTs). Here we use Induro-a new group-II intron-encoded RT-to map and quantify genome-wide tRNA modifications in Induro-tRNAseq. We show that Induro progressively increases readthrough over time by selectively overcoming RT stops without altering the misincorporation frequency. In a parallel analysis of Induro vs. a related RT, we provide comparative datasets to facilitate the prediction of each modification. We assess tRNA modifications across five human cell lines and …

Development And Characterization Of Cd44-Targeted X-Aptamers With Enhanced Binding Affinity For Cancer Therapeutics, Hongyu Wang, Weiguo He, Miguel-Angel Elizondo-Riojas, Xiaobo Zhou, Tae Jin Lee, David G Gorenstein

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

CD44, a pivotal cell surface molecule, plays a crucial role in many cellular functions, including cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid and is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, homing, and hematopoiesis. Moreover, CD44 is a commonly used cancer stem cell marker associated with tumor progression and metastasis. The development of CD44 aptamers that specifically target CD44 can be utilized to target CD44-positive cells, including cancer stem cells, and for drug delivery. Building on the primary sequences of our previously selected thioaptamers (TAs) and observed variations, we developed a bead-based X-aptamer (XA) library by …

Minerals And Human Health: From Deficiency To Toxicity, Mohammed S. Razzaque, Sunil J. Wimalawansa Jan 2025

Minerals And Human Health: From Deficiency To Toxicity, Mohammed S. Razzaque, Sunil J. Wimalawansa

School of Medicine Publications

Minerals are essential nutrients that play critical roles in human health by regulating various physiological functions. Examples include bone development, enzyme function, nerve signaling, and the immune response. Both the deficiencies and toxicities of minerals can have significant health implications. Deficiencies in macrominerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphate can lead to osteoporosis (associated with falls and fractures), cardiovascular events, and neuromuscular dysfunction. Trace mineral deficiencies, such as iron and zinc. Selenium deficiency impairs oxygen transport, immune function, and antioxidant defenses, contributing to anemia, delaying wound healing, and increasing susceptibility to infectious diseases. Conversely, excessive intake of minerals can have …

The Evolving Coast By Richard A. Davisjr, C. Nicholas Raphael Jan 2025

The Evolving Coast By Richard A. Davisjr, C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

The most obvious and attractive boundary to people is that which separates the land from the sea. Although shorelines have been examined and classified since the early part of this century (e.g. Gulliver, 1899: Suess, 1909), understanding of their hazards and the consequence of reckless development seems, until quite recently, to have passed us by.

The Right To Receive Information: Conceptual Problems, Shrutanjaya Bhardwaj Mr Jan 2025

The Right To Receive Information: Conceptual Problems, Shrutanjaya Bhardwaj Mr

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

This article studies the “right to receive information” or the “right to know”, a judicially-recognised right under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. It attempts to show, through an analysis of judgments of the Supreme Court and High Courts, that the right rests on a shaky philosophical foundation and that there are inconsistencies in how the right is judicially treated in terms of its structure and content.

First, the article questions the logic that the “right to know” is implicit in Article 19(1)(a) merely because it makes the exercise of free speech more meaningful. Such a logic was authoritatively rejected by …

Social Jetlag Alters Markers Of Exercise-Induced Mitochondrial Adaptations In The Heart, Michael B. Dial, Elias M. Malek, Austin R. Cooper, Greco A. Neblina, Nikoleta I. Vasileva, Graham Mcginnis

Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research

Social jetlag (SJL) represents the behavioral misalignment of sleep and wake times on work days and free days, and potently disrupts the circadian rhythm. SJL affects up to 70% of the population worldwide and is associated with increased risk for many cardiometabolic diseases. Animal models of acute SJL have shown disruption in locomotor activity and expression of clock genes in select tissues, its impact on the heart remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of prolonged SJL (6 weeks), on activity rhythms, and the impact on exercise-induced adaptations in the heart. Male mice (n …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The Tibetan Plateau, known as the “Asian water tower,” is a hotspot for complex hydroclimatic changes. We reveal that the previously decreasing atmospheric evaporative demand (Eo) trend at the end of the 20th century has reversed over the last two decades. Although both wind stilling and solar dimming have persisted, their effects on Eo rates have been overshadowed by increasing air temperatures and decreasing relative humidity, leading to a net rise in Eo for 1980−2015. Using the empirical “top-down” Budyko approach, we estimate that across seven sub-catchments draining the Tibetan Plateau, a 10% increase in annual-averaged …

Contemporary Views Of Spiritual And Theological Reflection (2013-2023) Compared To Forty Years Ago: Analysis Of 32 Texts, Chris Brouillard-Coyle, Des Mcenaney, Joselin Zak, Thomas St. James O’Connor

Consensus

What are contemporary views on spiritual and theological reflection? We answer this question using a hermeneutical research method analyzing 32 texts from the current situation. The data indicate five themes: 1) experiences as sources for spiritual/theological reflection, 2) meaning making as key component for spiritual/theological reflection, 3) growth in spiritual reflection and overlap with theological reflection, 4. some flexible methods; many without explicit method, and 5) spiritual but not religious. Discussion, limitations, and areas for future research are provided.

The Methodological Problems Of Incorporating Indigenous Philosophy In Collaborative Research, Luthonliu Gangmei, P. Milan Khangamcha

Comparative Philosophy

This paper addresses the methodological challenges inherent in collaborative research endeavours focused on the development of Indigenous philosophy. It argues that these challenges persist due to a lack of recognition of the autonomy and intrinsic philosophical value of ethno-philosophy or Indigenous philosophy. Despite the United Nations acknowledging the significance of indigenous worldviews and their philosophical underpinnings, they are still yet to be fully integrated into the global knowledge domain. The paper highlights the tendency to view indigenous philosophy solely as a cultural asset of indigenous peoples rather than recognizing its broader philosophical relevance. It identifies this as a critical interdisciplinary …

Is The Pla Overestimating The Potential Of Artificial Intelligence?, Koichiro Takagi

Joint Force Quarterly

This article analyzes how the People’s Liberation Army views the military potential and limitations of artificial intelligence as part of China’s broader drive toward “intelligentization.” Drawing on approximately 370 military theory articles published in PLA Daily in 2023, the author identifies four principal areas in which the PLA expects AI to transform warfare: situational awareness, military decisionmaking, unmanned weapons, and cognitive domain operations. PLA writings also discuss applications in training, logistics, and weapons development. At the same time, the PLA acknowledges significant risks, including unreliable or biased data, system malfunction, loss of human control, unintended escalation, legal and ethical concerns, …

Reassigning Batson: A Modern Approach, Max Angel Jan 2025

Reassigning Batson: A Modern Approach, Max Angel

Florida Law Review

In Batson v. Kentucky, the Supreme Court of the United States held that using peremptory challenges to strike jurors solely on their race violates the Equal Protection Clause. Following that decision, the Supreme Court extended Batson to gender-based peremptory challenges, holding that state-sponsored group stereotypes rooted in historical prejudice that bars a potential juror from serving on a jury violates that juror’s equal protection right. As it currently stands, there is no federal statute prohibiting peremptory strikes on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. And although some courts at the state and federal level have held such …
