Test Of Strategies For Production And Harvest Of Edible Roots From Hydroponic Plants, Mariam Yaslem Albreiki
Test Of Strategies For Production And Harvest Of Edible Roots From Hydroponic Plants, Mariam Yaslem Albreiki
Theses
Hydroponic plant cultivation is becoming increasingly popular in the UAE, especially for leafy greens and fruit vegetables. By the end of the growing cycle, the roots of hydroponic plants are usually treated as crop residues, even though roots of several species are potentially edible and could be processed into food or nutraceuticals. Root crops like sweet potato or carrot might even be grown in hydroponic systems for the primary purpose of producing edible fibrous or tuberous roots. However, the use of hydroponic systems for the production of root biomass is not yet common, and most farmers strive to produce plants …
Decolonizing Psychology As A Scientific And Ethical Necessity, Heidi Keller
Decolonizing Psychology As A Scientific And Ethical Necessity, Heidi Keller
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The starting point of this paper is the colonial heritage of mainstream psychology, and particularly of developmental psychology. The dominant paradigm is still the assumption of universality of theories and findings that originate in research from and with a tiny part of the world’s population. Associated is the neglect, even ignorance, concerning existing anthropological, cultural, and psychological ethnographic research from different communities across the globe, which demonstrate that the so-called WEIRD science (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) is different in many respects from the multitude of existing cultural patterns, representing an outlier in a statistical sense. The paper presents a …

Computer science research sometimes brushes with the law, from red-team exercises that probe the boundaries of authentication mechanisms, to AI research processing copyrighted material, to platform research measuring the behavior of algorithms and users. U.S.-based computer security research is no stranger to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in a relationship that is still evolving through case law, research practices, changing policies, and legislation
Amid the landscape computer scientists, lawyers, and policymakers have learned to navigate, anti-fraud laws are a surprisingly under-examined challenge for computer science research. Fraud brings separate issues that …

- Understanding migratory connectivity, or the linkage of populations between seasons, is critical for effective conservation and management of migratory wildlife. A growing number of tools are available for understanding where migratory individuals and populations occur throughout the annual cycle. Integration of the diverse measures of migratory movements can help elucidate migratory connectivity patterns with methodology that accounts for differences in sampling design, directionality, effort, precision and bias inherent to each data type.
- The R package MigConnectivity was developed to estimate population-specific connectivity and the range-wide strength of those connections. New functions allow users to integrate intrinsic markers, tracking and long-distance …

Biomechanical Risk Classification In Repetitive Lifting Using Multi-Sensor Electromyography Data, Revised National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health Lifting Equation, And Deep Learning, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki, Hardik Vora, Armin Moghadam
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Repetitive lifting tasks in occupational settings often result in shoulder injuries, impacting both health and productivity. Accurately assessing the biomechanical risk of these tasks remains a significant challenge in occupational ergonomics, particularly within manufacturing environments. Traditional assessment methods frequently rely on subjective reports and limited observations, which can introduce bias and yield incomplete evaluations. This study addresses these limitations by generating and utilizing a comprehensive dataset containing detailed time-series electromyography (EMG) data from 25 participants. Using high-precision wearable sensors, EMG data were collected from eight muscles as participants performed repetitive lifting tasks. For each task, the lifting index was calculated …

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
Ondansetron is an anti-emetic 5-HT3 receptor antagonist being investigated for treating neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). Sparse PK data were analyzed from a multicenter, double-blind clinical trial with 98 mother/neonate dyads. Pregnant women with opioid use disorder were randomized to receive either placebo or ondansetron 8 mg intravenously within 4 h of delivery. Neonates born to mothers who were randomized to ondansetron received 0.07 mg/kg orally once every 24 h for up to five doses. Using current PK data, model parameters from a two-compartmental structural model from the literature (i.e., a priori model) were updated with the Metropolis-Hastings Markov-chain Monte …

The ability of neurons to sense and respond to damage is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and facilitating nervous system repair. For some cell types, notably dorsal root ganglia and retinal ganglion cells, extensive profiling has uncovered a significant transcriptional response to axon injury, which influences survival and regenerative outcomes. In contrast, the injury responses of most supraspinal cell types, which display limited regeneration after spinal damage, remain mostly unknown. In this study, we used single-nuclei sequencing in adult male and female mice to profile the transcriptional responses of diverse supraspinal cell types to spinal injury. Surprisingly, thoracic spinal injury induced …

OBJECTIVE: Rett syndrome (RTT) and MECP2 duplication syndrome (MDS) result from under- and overexpression of MECP2, respectively. Preclinical studies using genetic-based treatment showed robust phenotype recovery for both MDS and RTT. However, there is a risk of converting MDS to RTT, or vice versa, if accurate MeCP2 levels are not achieved. The aim of this study was to identify biomarkers distinguishing RTT from MDS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 11 MDS and 6 male RTT like (MRL) individuals for a panel of clinical and neurophysiological assessments over two visits, 8-10 months apart.
RESULTS: We identified numerous clinical and physiological …

Immunoglobulins (Igs) are produced by B lymphocytes and play a key role in humoral immunity. Igs are classified into five isotypes (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD). Their primary function is to recognize and bind to foreign antigens. When Igs bind to antigens, they facilitate phagocytosis and promote clearance mediated by other immune cells. It is an essential component in protecting the host from outside pathogens. Hypogammaglobulinemia predisposes an individual to severe and recurrent infections. Therefore, replacement therapy is recommended to maintain optimal Ig level. In addition, Igs can modulate immune responses by to neutralizing proteins such as endotoxins or …

Microbial colonization of the human gut occurs soon after birth, proceeds through well-studied phases and is affected by lifestyle and other factors. Less is known about phage community dynamics during infant gut colonization due to small study sizes, an inability to leverage large databases and a lack of appropriate bioinformatics tools. Here we reanalysed whole microbial community shotgun sequencing data of 12,262 longitudinal samples from 887 children from four countries across four years of life as part of the The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study. We developed an extensive metagenome-assembled genome catalogue using the Marker-MAGu pipeline, …

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases (PLOS NTDs) publishes research devoted to pathogenesis and other clinical aspects, epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and control of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), as well as work relevant to public health policy. We define NTDs as poverty-promoting infectious diseases that can negatively impact the quality of life in rural areas and poor urban areas of low- and middle-income countries but which can also affect specific communities within high-income countries. The poverty-inducing effects of the NTDs operate by impairing child health and development, pregnancy outcomes for both mother and child, worker productivity, and quality of life. The …

Background: Immunocompromised individuals are at major risk for severe infectious complications. This is particularly relevant in the context of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) - a treatment modality that has proven curative for a range of malignant and nonmalignant hematological diseases. However, transplant-associated immune suppression leaves patients susceptible to infectious complications from viruses such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), adenovirus (AdV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and BK virus (BKV). While pharmacological agents are available to prevent and/or treat some of these viruses, they can be associated with significant toxicities and are often ineffective. To circumvent these issues, several groups have explored the …

Every mammal studied to date has been found to have a male mutation bias: male parents transmit more de novo mutations to offspring than female parents, contributing increasingly more mutations with age. Although male-biased mutation has been studied for more than 75 years, its causes are still debated. One obstacle to understanding this pattern is its near universality-without variation in mutation bias, it is difficult to find an underlying cause. Here, we present new data on multiple pedigrees from two primate species: aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis), a member of the strepsirrhine primates, and olive baboons (Papio anubis). In stark contrast to …

Past climate change is one of the important factors influencing primate speciation. Populations of various species could have risen or declined in response to these climatic fluctuations. Northeast India harbors a rich diversity of primates, where such fluctuations can be implicated. Recent advances in climate modeling as well as genomic data analysis has paved the way for understanding how species accumulate at a particular geographic region. We utilized these methods to explore the primate diversity in this unique region in relation to past climate change. To ascertain the population level changes, we inferred the demographic history of nine species of …

The spatial organization of cells within a tissue is dictated throughout dynamic developmental processes. We sought to understand whether cells geometrically coordinate with one another throughout development to achieve their organization. The pancreas is a complex cellular organ with a particular spatial organization. Signals from the mesenchyme, neurons, and endothelial cells instruct epithelial cell differentiation during pancreatic development. To understand the cellular diversity and spatial organization of the developing pancreatic niche, we mapped the spatial relationships between single cells over time. We found that four transcriptionally unique subtypes of mesenchyme in the developing pancreas spatially coordinate throughout development, with each …

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common comorbidity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The association of longitudinal RA disease activity with long-term kidney function has remained uncertain.
Method: We analysed a multicentre prospective RA registry in the USA from 2001 to 2022. The exposure was updated time-averaged Clinical Disease Activity Index (TA-CDAI) categories from study enrolment. The primary outcome was a longitudinal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) change. Parasitic infections are a major global health challenge, driven in part by complex interactions between parasites, host microbiota, and immune responses. Recent advances in microbiome research highlight the critical role of microbiota in influencing disease outcomes and treatment effectiveness. This review examines how changes in the microbiota impact parasite transmission, disease progression, and responses to treatment, focusing on key parasitic diseases such as Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, and ascariasis. The microbiota can either exacerbate or mitigate disease severity, depending on its composition, providing critical insights for novel therapeutic strategies. Emerging approaches discussed include the use of targeted probiotics, prebiotics, and microbiota-modulating …

Introduction: Treatment guidelines for immune-related inflammatory arthritis (irAE-IA) in patients with cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are vague with respect to the use of specific agents. Patients are usually referred to rheumatologists for treatment. We conducted a survey of expert rheumatologists to determine current practices. We also assessed experts' views on the potential deleterious effects of various agents on tumor progression.
Methods: We conducted a survey of international experts in the treatment of irAE-IA, identified as members of collaborative scientific workgroups in this area. Experts were presented with a case of a patient with moderate irAE-IA and were asked …

Emerging evidence suggests that lipid-laden macrophages (LLM) participate in lung damage in various clinical conditions. However, the mechanisms involved in LLM formation are not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the link between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and LLM formation. We found that ROS triggered by cigarette smoke extract (CSE) or H2O2 significantly promoted LLM formation. Given the key role of ROS in LLM formation, we further demonstrated that LLM formation is induced by various ROS-producing stimuli, including bacteria, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL), hyperoxia, and E-cigarette vapor extract (EVE). Meanwhile, cytochrome P450 family-1 subfamily B member 1 …

Background: Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) added to lifestyle therapy can mitigate weight-loss-induced reduction of muscle mass and bone mineral density (BMD) in older men with obesity and hypogonadism.
Objective: To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the attenuation of muscle and BMD loss in response to TRT during intensive lifestyle intervention in this high-risk older population.
Methods: Among 83 older (≥ 65 years) men with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and hypogonadism (early AM testosterone persistently < 300 ng/dL) associated with frailty (Modified Physical Performance Test score ≤ 31) randomized into 26-week lifestyle therapy plus testosterone (LT+TRT) or placebo (LT+Pbo) in the LITROS trial, 38 underwent serial muscle biopsies for the muscle transcriptomics substudy.
Results: Despite similar ~10% weight loss, lean body mass and thigh muscle volume decreased less in LT+TRT than LT+Pbo (-2% vs. -4%, respectively; p = …

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in up to half of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and is associated with increased risks of death and more days of mechanical ventilation, hospitalization, and vasopressor drug support. Our objective was to build a granular relational database to study the impact that AKI has on infants admitted to Level-IV NICUs.
Methods: A relational database was created by linking data from the Children's Hospitals Neonatal Database with AKI-focused data from electronic health records from 9 centers.
Results: The current cohort consists of 24,870 infants with a median (IQR) gestational age …
