Systems And Methods For Determining Cell Number Count In Automated Stereology Z-Stack Images, Palak Pankajbhai Dave, Dmitry Goldgof, Lawrence O. Hall, Peter R. Mouton

USF Patents

Systems and methods for automated stereology using deep learning are disclosed. The systems include an update in the form of a semi-automatic approach for ground truth preparation in 3D stacks of microscopy images (disector stacks) for generating more training data. The systems also present an exemplary disector-based MIMO framework where all the planes of a 3D disector stack are analyzed as opposed to a single focus-stacked image (EDF image) per stack. The MIMO approach avoids the costly computations of 3D deep learning-based methods by using the 3D context of cells in disector stacks; and prevents stereological bias in the previous …

Deep5mc: Predicting 5-Methylcytosine (5mc) Methylation Status Using A Deep Learning Transformer Approach, Evan Kinnear, Houssemeddine Derbel, Zhongming Zhao, Qian Liu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

DNA methylations, such as 5-methylcytosine (5mC), are crucial in biological processes, and aberrant methylations are strongly linked to various human diseases. Genomic 5mC is not randomly distributed but exhibits a strong association with genomic sequences. Thus, various computational methods were developed to predict 5mC status based on DNA sequences. These methods generated promising achievements and overcome the limitations of experimental approaches. However, few studies have comprehensively investigated the dependency of 5mC on genomic sequences, and most existing methods focus on specific genomic regions. In this work, we introduce Deep5mC, a deep learning transformer-based method designed to predict 5mC methylations. Deep5mC …

Paradigm Shift In Obesity Treatment: An Extensive Review Of Current Pipeline Agents, Ecesu Çeti̇n, Brian Pedersen, Mehmet Furkan Burak

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Obesity is a multifaceted disease that poses a significant public health challenge. Recent discoveries in understanding the biological pathways that regulate satiety and metabolism have led to a shift in the treatment paradigm for obesity. Thus, the gap between pharmacological and surgical interventions has diminished. The latest approved anti-obesity medications are achieving weight loss comparable to surgery. These GLP-1 analog-based therapies not only cause substantial weight loss but also improve obesity-associated comorbidities. However, there are still unmet needs in obesity care, and treatment options with alternative pathways are necessary. Whether achieved through lifestyle changes or medication, weight loss often leads …

Synthetic Osteobiologics In Spine Surgery: A Review, Aydin Si̇nan Apaydin, Eli Johnson, Prince Antwi, Brett Rocos, Michael M. Haglund, Christopher Shaffrey, Peter Passias, Muhammad Adb-El-Barr, Khoi Than

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aimOsteobiologics are increasingly used in orthopedics and spine surgery to facilitate bone healing and prevent non-union. Synthetic osteobiologics are artificial materials crafted in laboratories that aim to replicate the natural composition and functionality of bone. Notable examples, such as calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate, are engineered to mirror the mineral aspect of bone. They mimic human bone functionality, exhibiting osteoconductive, osteoinductive, and osteogenic properties. These characteristics promote cell attachment, migration, recruitment, and differentiation. Consequently, synthetic osteobiologics (osteoconductive grafts) have been introduced in bone fracture repair. The main strength of synthetic osteobiologics in spine surgery lies in improving fusion rates and …

Effects Of Glycosylation Combined With Tannic Acid Modification On The Emulsification Properties Of Molten Globule Egg White Protein, Wan Jun, Zhang Xiaoqin, Deng Bowen, Ai Minmin, Xie Zhequan

Food and Machinery

[Objective] This study aimed to develop a modification method to stabilize emulsions using molten -globule state egg white protein (MGEWP ).[Methods] MGEWP was prepared through partial denaturation of egg white protein via pH induction. The synergistic effects of D-xylose and tannic acid on the emulsifying properties of MGEWP were analyzed.[Results]] Increasing tannic acid concentration significantly elevated the turbidity and browning degree of D-xylose glycosylated MGEWP (X-MGEWP ) (P<0.05).Tannic acid facilitated the unfolding of X -MGEWP,exposing free sulfhydryl and active groups, which enhanced molecular flexibility, apparent viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus (P<0.05).However,under extreme pH value treatment, the active groups of MGEWP were passivated, inhibiting the Maillard reaction with D-xylose.As a result, there was no significant difference in emulsification properties between glycosylated X -MGEWP and untreated MGEWP (P>0.05).The addition of tannic acid enhanced the emulsifying activity of X -MGEWP obviously (P<0.05),and it was dose -dependent with tannic acid concentration.[Conclusion] The synergistic modification of MGEWP with D-xylose/tannic acid represents a promising method for enhancing the emulsifying properties of MGEWP,offering potential applications in emulsion stabilization.
