Developing Publics In Companies Through Infrastructuring For Data-Driven Workplaces In Japan, Masako Kitazaki, Riichiro Take, Ryoko Koborita, Yuichi Nakamura
IASDR Conference Series
This study investigates how the participatory design concept of infra structuring and the formation of a public manifests differently in Japanese workplaces under data-driven management. Building on recognized pillars for public formation—incorporation of authority, development of attachment, and cultivation of ownership—we explore how these elements are shaped by Japan's unique organizational and cultural dynamics. Although employees in Japan express concerns about data use in the workplace, such as potential increases in bias, discrimination, deskilling, and unsafe practices, these anxieties rarely lead to open discussion or collective action. We argue that socio cultural factors, including a deep-rooted emphasis on harmony and …

Facial movement delivers rich emotional messages. This pictorial explores a novel concept in enhancing expressive facial communication – the Internal Facial Contour (IFC). The IFC device constructs a linear visual language on the face through a collection of face-worn wearables. These wearable augmentations deform in response to facial muscle movement, thereby suggesting emotional states. The shape of the IFC device naturally becomes visually wider and more open when smiling; in contrast, it becomes narrower and more closed when frowning. To test the acceptance of this communication language, feedback was collected through casual interviews, visual perception tests, and usage observations. The …

Mercurial, Bhavana Neti
Mercurial, Bhavana Neti
Theses
Mercurial is a groundbreaking visual journey through typography that charts the fluid and often volatile passage, from the depths of sadness, eventually finding the light in the end, inspired by the song title Louder than Bombs by BTS, a Korean boyband. Over a carefully observed period, this book captures the subtle and dramatic transformations of emotion through a unique lens. "Mercurial" represents a unique and multi-layered approach to understanding and visualizing emotions. Initially, the exploration of shapes as a representational tool proved inadequate for capturing this complexity. This led to a pivotal shift towards typography, where the inherent qualities of …

Rubbing Away Respect: How Repeated Touch Alters The Meaning Of Women’S Statues, Olivea Kittrell
Theses
This thesis examines how repeated public interactions with statues of women, particularly the ritualized rubbing of their breasts, alter both the material surfaces and symbolic meanings of statues. We will focus on three bronze sculptures: the Molly Malone statue in Dublin, the Juliet statue in Verona, and the Bust of Dalida in Paris. Through these, we will investigate how statues created with commemorative intent become sites of sexualized behavior based on gender. The problem this thesis addresses is the lack of scholarly analysis on how gendered public interaction physically and symbolically transforms statues of women. While some scholarship covers either …
