Communicating Change: A Visual Analysis Of American Political And Activist Posters, Hana Sage Morshedi
Communicating Change: A Visual Analysis Of American Political And Activist Posters, Hana Sage Morshedi
Graphic Communication
Across U.S. history, posters have helped movements inform, persuade, and mobilize the public, going beyond information to signal identity and values. In this project, I analyze 40 historically significant American political and activist posters, from wartime propaganda to civil rights and queer liberation, to explore how visual choices shape public opinion and drive social change. I focus on elements such as community/heritage colors, typography, composition, and cultural or movement-specific motifs to see how they signal identity, guide action, and contribute to a “successful” poster.
Interfaces To Enhance Performance In Human-Ai Teams Conducting Safety-Critical Military Operations: A Route Reconnaissance Use Case, Sarvesh Sawant
Interfaces To Enhance Performance In Human-Ai Teams Conducting Safety-Critical Military Operations: A Route Reconnaissance Use Case, Sarvesh Sawant
All Dissertations
Military teams frequently operate in hazardous and dynamic environments where they must recognize threats, act swiftly, and maintain awareness of their surroundings. To assist soldiers in identifying threats, analyzing data, and creating safer routes, Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are being integrated into these teams. But only when humans comprehend what AI is doing, why it is doing it, and how to collaborate with it can AI be helpful in these high-stakes missions. To enhance human-AI collaboration during military route reconnaissance missions, this dissertation explores ways to improve human-AI communication. In a route reconnaissance mission, teams of soldiers must navigate through …

Program Development And Administration Of Experiential Learning Practices In Ot Education, Elizabeth Ann Marie Beeman
Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones
Experiential learning opportunities enhance occupational therapy students’ clinical skills, confidence, and professional preparation through hands-on practice. This capstone project focused on program development and administration at Abilene Christian University’s occupational therapy department. Initially centered on establishing a student-run campus clinic, the project pivoted during week one when needs assessment revealed the clinic concept no longer aligned with departmental and university strategic goals. The revised focus incorporated experiential learning theory and interprofessional education. Over 14 weeks, I conducted nine faculty interviews and four student focus groups. Findings indicated unanimous support for mandatory, scheduled experiential learning opportunities while identifying common implementation barriers, …

Practice?, Pei Chen
Practice?, Pei Chen
Theses
3D animation is a combination of art and technique. Art serves to convey your perspective, express beauty, tell stories, and more. However, to accomplish these goals, we need solid technical support. Only by paying attention to both, can we achieve excellent results. The title of this film is “Practice?”, which is a deliberate pun. On one hand, "practice" refers to the martial arts training sequences of the character, during which his master provides guidance, intervenes in his movements, and progressively increases the difficulty. On the other hand, "practice" also symbolizes my own artistic and technical experimentation—exploring and refining skills in …

Whisper Wall: Transforming Global Superstitions Into A Unified, Sound-Reactive Immersive Experience, Hardika Nitin Patil
Theses
Superstitions, often dismissed as irrational in today’s data-driven world, remain deeply rooted in human culture and behavior, offering meaning and a sense of control amid uncertainty. Whisper Wall is an immersive, sound-reactive installation that invites audiences to explore these enduring beliefs through whispered audio narration and symbolic, shadow-inspired visual storytelling. This project re-engages audiences with rich, cross-cultural superstitions, encouraging reflection beyond skepticism to thoughtfully examine their origins and significance. Blending visual communication, motion design, sound, and interaction, Whisper Wall creates a multisensory experience where users activate intimate stories via interactive elements—whisper-like audio delivered through red paper cups coupled with minimalist, …
The Presentation Of Self In Everyday Digital Life: A Study Of Self- Disclosure And Work Environments, Mackenzie Michelle Skiff
The Presentation Of Self In Everyday Digital Life: A Study Of Self- Disclosure And Work Environments, Mackenzie Michelle Skiff
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
The digital age impacts individuals’ lives in many ways. One impact is how and where work is completed across many careers. The work-from-home strategy enables individuals to complete work that is not within a shared space, such as an office. With the absence of this shared space, communication practices within workplaces could be changing. Specifically, self-disclosure while working from home may differ from self-disclosure within the office or hybrid (both in office and remote) work environments. This thesis investigates whether there are differences in self-disclosure practices across three different types of contemporary work environments and offers a digital update to …
Achilles, Sreelekha Samala
Achilles, Sreelekha Samala
Theses
ACHILLES is a speculative design project and conceptual artifact. It is not intended to function as a medically certified or biomechanically operational prosthetic arm. Instead, it operates within the realm of design research, using visual realism and luxury aesthetics to explore how assistive technologies could be perceived differently in cultural, emotional, and commercial contexts. Using 3D software to experiment with color, pattern, and texture, I designed a realistic mockup to demonstrate how Achilles could appear in a high-end commercial setting. Instead of animating the model, I focused on camera motion to highlight the prosthetic from multiple angles, emphasizing its sculptural …

Mobile Computer Vision Application For Agricultural Disease Detection Of Pepper Diseases Using Two-Stage Deep Learning System, Carlos Jose Estevez, Mai Dang, Ryan Bass
SMU Data Science Review
Plant diseases pose a significant threat to food security, particularly in developing countries where farmers often lack the resources and infrastructure for early detection. In nations like Mexico and the Dominican Republic, the spread of harmful plant diseases impacts key agricultural commodities, such as habanero peppers, leading to substantial yield losses. This study presents a computer vision system based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and an object detection model (YOLO) to help farmers detect pepper diseases efficiently. The system uses a two-stage approach: YOLOv11n first detects pepper leaves in images, then a lightweight MobileNetV3Small model classifies whether the detected leaves …

Infinite Screen-A Spatial Interface For Multi-Device Collaboration, Yichen Hou
Infinite Screen-A Spatial Interface For Multi-Device Collaboration, Yichen Hou
Theses
Infinite Screen is a speculative design project that explores how mixed reality can transform a room full of personal devices into a shared spatial workspace for small-team collaboration. In studios, classrooms, and meeting rooms, people routinely work with multiple laptops, tablets, phones, and large displays, yet most existing tools still treat collaboration as a single-person screen-sharing activity. As a result, teams struggle to maintain a coherent shared view of their work, spending significant time negotiating who presents, which device is connected, and where key information resides. This thesis investigates how a room-scale interface might orchestrate these scattered screens through an …
Cultural Synthesis In Iranian Graphic Design: A Fusion Of Tradition And Modernity, Maryam Mehrabadi
Cultural Synthesis In Iranian Graphic Design: A Fusion Of Tradition And Modernity, Maryam Mehrabadi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis examines Iranian graphic design as a politically embedded and semiotically charged field wherein visual form operates as a site of ideological negotiation, cultural memory, and symbolic resistance. Focusing on the works of Ghobad Shiva and Morteza Momayez, the study situates graphic design within the sociopolitical constraints of the Pahlavi monarchy and the post-1979 Islamic Republic. It argues that Iranian design practices cannot be understood outside the country’s enduring identity crisis—shaped by the unresolved tension between three coexisting cultural strata: ancient Persian heritage, Islamic civilizational identity, and Western modernity. Drawing on the work of Edward Said, the thesis also …
Timeless Poetry, Xuning Li
Timeless Poetry, Xuning Li
Theses
Timeless Poetry reimagines classical Chinese poetry through contemporary digital tools, transforming ancient verse into immersive visual experiences. Using Cinema 4D and Blender for 3D modeling and ink-wash–inspired rendering, the project reconstructs poetic landscapes as cinematic-style environments that invite viewers to encounter traditional imagery through modern visual language. Postcards—chosen for their nostalgic and emotional resonance—serve as both a physical anchor and an interactive trigger: when scanned, each card reveals an AR visuals that reveal the scene in motion. This hybrid design bridges past and present, showing how technology can enhance, rather than replace, cultural heritage by offering new entry points for …

Occasional Paper Series
At the heart of decision-making in children’s literature is the publisher who decides whose stories are told and how (Encisco et al, 2010). There is some research concerning inclusivity practices in the children’s literature that we see in libraries, homes and publishing houses (Caple & Tian, 2022; Daly, Vanderschantz, Mitchell & Blair, 2025; Daly, 2021; Stagg Peterson & Robinson, 2020). There is, however, little work examining how the publishing process can contribute to increased diversity in children’s picturebooks, particularly in relation to Indigenous languages and cultures. International research shows that there is limited cultural and linguistic diversity evident in children’s …
Exploring Human Perception And Cognition In Expressing And Understanding Mechanical Designs, Yan-Ting Chen
Exploring Human Perception And Cognition In Expressing And Understanding Mechanical Designs, Yan-Ting Chen
Theses
Effective communication of mechanical designs through technical drawings requires geometric accuracy, efficiency, and an understanding of human perception and cognition. Although advances in computer-aided design (CAD) software have improved drawing precision and automation, current tools often overlook the spatial reasoning processes that users employ to interpret these representations. This study seeks to improve the accuracy and efficiency of human-computer interaction in CAD environments by examining how individuals perceive and interpret three-dimensional mechanical components within the context of technical drawings. A key focus is the identification of canonical and optimal views that align with intuitive human understanding. Through a series of …

From Prompt To Prejudice: Visual Evidence From Ai Image Generation Platforms, Jinu K. Varghese, Padma Rani
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This study examines how AI image generation systems perpetuate digital orientalism through systematic cultural representation patterns that increasingly shape global digital markets and international development discourse. Using visual social semiotics methodology, we conducted comparative analysis of Midjourney and ChatGPT platforms across nine culturally specific prompts examining religious imagery, contemporary social dynamics, and power structures in Indian cultural contexts. Our findings reveal that both platforms consistently reproduce colonial-era representational frameworks despite culturally sensitive prompting and advanced technical capabilities. The analysis identifies three systematic patterns: temporal displacement strategies that acknowledge modernity while containing it within orientalist categories, institutional validation requirements that privilege …
