Unlike many studies involving the effects of diet in the development of the disease in older populations, this study would involve UCF college students who are scheduled to graduate in 2030. The participants would be evaluated using the Cognitive Function Battery, a series of tests shown …
Predicting Milk Quality With Machine Learning, Franco Vidal, Matthew Nighting-Henderson
Predicting Milk Quality With Machine Learning, Franco Vidal, Matthew Nighting-Henderson
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2025
Milk is a critical component of diets around the world, offering essential nutrients such as protein, calcium, and vitamin B12. However, in many low-income and rural regions, milk quality is often compromised due to poor storage conditions, lack of pasteurization, and even intentional adulteration. Low-quality milk poses serious health risks, including bacterial infections, toxin exposure, and long-term organ damage. These challenges highlight the need for reliable, accessible methods to assess milk quality without relying on costly laboratory testing.
In this study, we propose a data-driven approach to predict milk quality using ordered logistic regression. The dataset used, sourced from Kaggle, …

Upper And Lower Body Volume-Equated Resistance Exercise Increases Post-Exercise Lipid Oxidation In Trained Eumenorrheic Females., Alyssa L. Parten, Abbie E. Smith-Ryan, Eric K. O'Neal, T Scott Lyons, Hunter S. Waldman
Theses
Exercise strategies targeted to increase lipid oxidation (LOx) in the resting state present an opportunity to optimize long-term metabolic health. However, research examining the effects of resistance training (RT) on LOx in females remains scarce, particularly with no studies yet examining whether differences exist in LOx between upper and lower body RT. This study examined LOx changes following volume-load equated upper and lower body RT in well-trained, eumenorrheic females. Twenty-two (age: 25.4 ± 5.6 years, BMI: 24.6 ± 2.7) females completed a 3-repetition-maximum (RM) and 1RM test for the barbell back squat (BS) and bench press (BP), respectively. From these …
Defining The Genetic Basis Of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Liver Disease With Whole Exome Sequencing, Xinmiao Meng
Defining The Genetic Basis Of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Liver Disease With Whole Exome Sequencing, Xinmiao Meng
Public Health Theses
Polycystic liver and kidney diseases are inherited disorders marked by progressive cyst formation in hepatic and renal tissues, leading to significant morbidity through organ enlargement, impaired function, and eventual kidney failure or painful hepatic enlargement. While several genes—including PKD1, PKD2, GANAB, and PRKCSH—are implicated, a substantial proportion of cases remain genetically unexplained, limiting diagnostic precision and therapeutic development. This thesis aims to refine the genetic understanding of polycystic liver diseases through whole exome sequencing of 292 individuals with liver and/or kidney cysts. We first identify pathogenic variants in known disease genes in 133 individuals (46%), confirming the recurrent involvement of …

Falling Birthrate And Rising C-Section: Post-Pandemic Evidence From New York, M. Rabbani, Z. Akbari
Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Background: The literature documents the effects of the pandemic on birthrate, birthweight, and pregnancy complications. However, the evidence is mixed on the persistence of these effects post-pandemic. Objective: This study examined whether birthrate has decline with the onset of the pandemic, if the effects subsided post-pandemic, and whether there are discrepancies by race and ethnicity, or between vaginal delivery and C-section. Methods: Using the 2012–2022 hospital inpatient discharge data of New York, we implemented fixed-effects regression models to estimate changes in birthrate and delivery method composition. The study was conducted at the Zip-Code level, and eliminated the effect of time-invariant …
Quality Improvement Project: Improving Access To Early Intervention For Prediabetic Patients In Primary Care, Jude Abam
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Primary care frequently misdiagnoses prediabetes, which serves as a diabetes type 2 precursor, resulting in failed early treatment opportunities. A structured staff education program was the goal of the quality improvement project during the DNP implementation. The initiative addressed knowledge gaps alongside screening protocol standardization all to enhance early detection as well as intervention efforts. Using both Lewin’s Theory of Change and Kolb’s Theory of Experiential Learning, a pre-post-design was applied across seven weeks. Prediabetes screening and management, along with its risk factors, were taught to the staff. The demographic questionnaires helped in assessing the knowledge and self-efficacy of the …

Nurture Is Nature: The Molecular Basis Of Caregiver Genotype Effects On Larval Growth And Caste Development In The Clonal Raider Ant, Patrick Konrad Piekarski
Nurture Is Nature: The Molecular Basis Of Caregiver Genotype Effects On Larval Growth And Caste Development In The Clonal Raider Ant, Patrick Konrad Piekarski
Student Theses and Dissertations
The distinction between nature (genetics) and nurture (environment) is blurry, in part because the environment includes the genes of social partners. This is especially evident for parents and their offspring, where genes expressed in one partner profoundly influence the physiology and behavior of the other. Such indirect genetic effects (IGEs) are mediated through social interactions. Although parental care has evolved in many disparate lineages, in most systems it is challenging to delineate the effects of genetics and environment on the phenotypes of caregivers and offspring. This is because most animals with parental care reproduce sexually, meaning each genotype is represented …

Larval Environments Affect The Implementation Of The Sterile Insect Technique On Aedes Mosquitoes, Katherine G. Evans
Larval Environments Affect The Implementation Of The Sterile Insect Technique On Aedes Mosquitoes, Katherine G. Evans
Theses and Dissertations
Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an effective method for controlling pests and has been increasing in popularity to control Aedes mosquitoes. SIT involves inundating an area with sterilized male mosquitoes to reduce egg hatch and ultimately the number of wild adults. Previous research indicates that enacting mortality early in the larval life of Aedes mosquitoes can result in counter-productive effects, due to reduced competition among developing larvae. I hypothesize that the effectiveness of SIT at reducing adult populations is modified by densitydependent mortality and density-dependent growth among larvae. I performed two field-to-lab studies and developed an individual-based model to test …
Scrolling For Two: An Exploration Of Pregnant Women's Social Support And Information Seeking Behaviors Using Technology During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Sarah Knowlton
Theses and Dissertations
Pregnant women faced additional challenges in accessing reliable support and pregnancy- related information, leading to increased distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Quarantine measures limited doctor’s appointments and isolated pregnant women from their families, which meant that meaningful connections and convenient information was important.
The purpose of this study is to explore the implications of COVID-19 social distancing on pregnant women, with a focus on three questions: 1) what digital technologies did pregnant women use for support and information seeking purposes during the pandemic? 2) how did pregnant women use technology to seek social support during the pandemic? 3) how did …

The Evolution Of Social Protection Norms Within The International Monetary Fund, Cindy W. Ziem
Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the evolution of social protection norms within the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and identifies the key norm entrepreneurs. Social protection, which encompasses policies and programs designed to help individuals and communities manage risks, combat poverty and inequality, and access economic opportunities, has undergone significant transformation on a global scale. Traditionally, social policies were not included in the IMF’s agenda, which primarily focused on fiscal matters. However, the Fund has increasingly recognized social protection as vital for macroeconomic stability. This shift reflects a broader transformation in international norms and the progressive inclusion of social policies within global economic …

Quantification Of Auxin-Cytokinin Response During Primary Root And Lateral Root Development In Common Bean, Gurdeep Singh
Quantification Of Auxin-Cytokinin Response During Primary Root And Lateral Root Development In Common Bean, Gurdeep Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Roots support water and nutrient uptake, anchorage, and soil interactions through continuous growth at the primary root tip (PRT). In common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), new cells are produced in an open root apical meristem and subsequently elongate in the elongation zone, and together these processes drive root tip progression through the soil. Lateral roots (LRs) arise in the differentiation zone, where pairs of pericycle founder cells dedifferentiate, divide asymmetrically, and form lateral root primordia (LRP) that pass through defined developmental stages before emergence. Auxin and cytokinin (CK) are central regulators of both primary root growth and LR development, yet their …

Programming Carcass Composition Through Gestational Nutrition, Sydni Elise Borders
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of maternal nutrient restriction during mid-gestation on the performance of the dam, feeding performance, carcass composition, and genetic expression in the offspring. Cows (n = 46) were randomly assigned to one of two treatments based on global nutrient intake: 1) fed to achieve and/or maintain a BCS of 5 or 6 (Positive Energy Status [PES]; n = 24) or 2) fed to lose one BCS during 99 days of mid-gestation (Negative Energy Status [NES]; n = 22). Cows in NES had greater decreases (P < 0.05) in body fat stores and muscle mass, elevated NEFA concentrations, and displayed decreased (P < 0.05) DMI, HP, and GHG emissions. There were no differences in milk components or volume produced between treatments (P > 0.05). There were no differences in …

Developing A Rural Family Health Curriculum To Promote Retention Of New Graduate Nurse Practitioners, Molly G. Boudreau
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: There is a critical shortage of primary care providers (PCPs) in rural areas of the United States. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are essential for addressing the primary care shortage especially in rural communities. However, significant barriers exist to the retention of NPs in rural communities, especially new graduate NPs in the first year of practice. Evidence in the literature suggests bolstering the focus on transition-to-practice for new graduate NPs to improve retention and turnover rates.
Purpose: The aim of this quality improvement project was to develop a structured, postgraduate, on-boarding curriculum at a rural outpatient family medicine clinic with the …

Abstract
Background: Infants who are born prematurely stay in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until they are able to take full enteral nutrition by mouth. While in the NICU a nasogastric tube (NG tube) would be used to supplement the volume needed to be ingested for optimal nutrition. Infants typically feed better with a consistent caregiver and at home in an environment with less stimulation. Allowing infants to be discharged with an NG tube allows the parents to be more involved in their infant's care with a shorter hospital stay. An increased number of infants being discharged home with …

A Quality Improvement Project To Enhance Chronic-Condition And Self-Care Knowledge In Adolescents With Spina Bifida, Ann Paris
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Spina Bifida is the most common central nervous system disorder in the United States (CDC, 2024). Even with early surgical repair, patients may have chronic, disabling, multisystem needs (Phillips et al., 2017). Adequate care of Spina Bifida requires a multidisciplinary approach. As such, patients with spina bifida require multiple specialty providers, clinic appointments, care-tasks, and interventions (CDC, 2024, Phillips, et al., 2017). Synthesizing information from multiple care providers can be daunting, especially for adolescents as they grow more autonomous in their care, and especially as they enter the age of pediatric-to-adult transition (Psihogios et al., 2015).
