Predictors Of Dietary Meat Reduction In Gen Z College Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey Using The Com-B Model, Deanne Moosman Jan 2025

Predictors Of Dietary Meat Reduction In Gen Z College Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey Using The Com-B Model, Deanne Moosman

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Overconsumption of meat negatively impacts human and environmental health, and these challenges are expected to worsen due to global population growth and increasing meat consumption. Many consumers appear unwilling to reduce their meat intake, and this resistance to dietary change is more common among adult men than women. However, data about meat-eating attitudes and behaviors are lacking for younger generational cohorts. Generation Z (i.e., those born between 1995 and 2010; Gen Z) is a growing consumer group whose dietary decisions will have environmental and human health consequences. Little is known about Gen Z's meat consumption habits and behaviors and whether …

The Association Of Vitamin D Supplement Intake On Cardiovascular Health Outcomes Among U.S. Adults, Using Nhanes Data., Lamisa Tanzim Ruhin

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Background: Vitamin D, a fat-soluble nutrient essential for bone health and calcium homeostasis, has also been implicated in cardiovascular health outcomes. Despite extensive observational studies suggesting an inverse association between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have yielded inconsistent findings regarding the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in reducing cardiovascular risk.

Objective: This study investigated the association between reported vitamin D supplement intake and cardiovascular health biomarkers, specifically focusing on non-HDL cholesterol, among U.S. adults using NHANES 2021-2023 data.

Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative analysis was conducted utilizing secondary data from NHANES. Participants aged 18 and …

Complete High Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury Causes Bowel Dysfunction In Mice, Olivia Wireman, Ellie L. Sams, Lynnet E. Richey, Gabrielle V. Hammers, Andrew N. Stewart, William M. Bailey, Samir P. Patel, John C. Gensel

Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center Faculty Publications

Bowel dysfunction, is a prevalent and life-impacting comorbidity of spinal cord injury (SCI) with no long-term treatment available. SCI-induced colon changes including motility and fibrosis are understudied as are strategies to address SCI bowel dysfunction. This need remains partly due to the lack of a mouse model that recapitulates the human condition. We hypothesized that a high thoracic spinal transection in mice would trigger bowel dysfunction with coincident colon pathology similar to humans and rats after SCI. We observed bowel dysfunction as increased fecal pellet numbers within the colon, smaller pellet size, and decreased motility. Fecal pellets numbers in the …

Water, Sanitation, And Hygiene (Wash) Services Among Households, Healthcare Facilities And Schools In Rural Ghana, Samantha Gillis Jan 2025

Water, Sanitation, And Hygiene (Wash) Services Among Households, Healthcare Facilities And Schools In Rural Ghana, Samantha Gillis

Public Health Theses

Introduction: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections affect more than 1 billion people globally, particularly in low-income areas with poor sanitation. While mass drug administration is a common control strategy, long-term elimination requires a broader, integrated approach with an emphasis on sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices, community-led initiatives, and economic development. Currently, there are critical gaps in understanding the impacts of WASH infrastructure in households, healthcare facilities, and schools on hookworm prevalence, specifically in rural Ghana. Methods: Using qualitative surveys, we characterized the current WASH landscape among households, healthcare facilities and schools in the Bono East region of Ghana. Hookworm …

The Effects Of Family Communication Patterns On Young Adults’ Healthcare Encounters, Victoria Esquivel Jan 2025

The Effects Of Family Communication Patterns On Young Adults’ Healthcare Encounters, Victoria Esquivel

Communication Theses - Archive

Family communication through childhood is shown to affect young adults’ health decision-making over time. This study examined young adults’ (18-28 years) perceptions of family communication patterns and their effects on avoidance of healthcare encounters, communication self-efficacy, ratings of healthcare quality and trust with healthcare providers, through the lens of Family Communication Patterns Theory. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at a large southern university (n=127). Results showed that young adults from families high in conversation orientation rating their healthcare encounters more positively. Implications are discussed with healthcare providers, educators, and family members in mind. Future research should examine these relationships qualitatively.

Plza Rna Chaperone Activity In Borreliella Burgdorferi Is Modulated By C-Di-Gmp, Dhara T. Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common arthropod-borne disease in North America and is caused by the spirochete, Borreliella burgdorferi. LD spirochetes are maintained in an enzootic cycle of Ixodes species ticks and a vertebrate reservoir. The secondary messenger molecule c-di-GMP plays a crucial role in adaptive responses during the enzootic cycle. PlzA is the sole c-di-GMP-binding protein identified to date that is encoded by all Borreliella burgdorferi isolates. PlzA has both c-di-GMP-dependent and c-di-GMP-independent functions and is required to complete the enzootic cycle. The full range of PlzA regulatory activities has yet to be fully defined. We determined …

Enhancing Learning Methods In Medical Education: Effective Strategies For Student Success, Syed Tawassul Hassan, Syeda Kashaf Batool, Muhammad Liaquat Raza

Health Professions Education

This perspective highlights three often overlooked but highly effective methods for boosting student performance in medical education. Active recall, which involves retrieving information from memory during learning, helps strengthen understanding and retention of complex medical concepts. Spaced repetition, spreading out study sessions over time, enhances long-term memory formation and reduces forgetting. Both techniques have been shown to outperform traditional passive review and cramming. We have also emphasized the importance of lifestyle factors, particularly sleep and diet, in academic success. Studies using wearable devices have linked better sleep quality to higher grades, with poor sleep habits significantly hurting performance. To implement …

Solution-Focused, Strengths-Based Practice: An Integrated And Future-Orientated Approach To Resistance In Child Protection And Welfare Service Users?, Susan Flynn Dr

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article presents a theoretical exposition of an integrated solution-focused, strengths-based perspective. It does so through a thematic review of literature. The proposition is that solution-focused, strengths-based techniques can offer practitioners useful modes of working with resistance in child protection and welfare service users. The issue of working well with service users who present as resistant to the work, is complex and challenging in child protection and welfare practice. Practitioners must strive for rigorous, humane and compassionate practice, which never distracts from or compromises child safety. A thematic review of literature on solution-focused, strengths-based practice is presented. Therein, relevant theoretical …

Sorting Out Surrogacy: Three Considerations For Evidence-Informed Law Reform, Vanessa Gruben, Alana Cattapan Jan 2025

Sorting Out Surrogacy: Three Considerations For Evidence-Informed Law Reform, Vanessa Gruben, Alana Cattapan

Canadian Journal of Family Law

This article draws on novel survey research with surrogates in Canada—the Exploring Surrogates Experiences and Insights Survey—to examine three critical issues for potential law reform: (1) reimbursement and compensation (i.e., payment); (2) the work of surrogacy agencies; and (3) surrogacy arrangements involving foreign intended parents. Following a brief history of the regulation of surrogacy in Canada and a description of the survey’s methods, it explores each of these areas in turn, using the survey results to identify considerations for law reform. It argues that while the current legislative and regulatory framework largely addresses key issues related to commercialization and commodification, …

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Introduction: Children growing up in arid and semi-arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face heightened risks, often resulting in poor developmental outcomes. In Kenya, the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) exhibit the lowest health and developmental indicators among children. Despite these risks, some children grow up successfully and overcome the challenges. However, there is limited comprehensive data on sources of risks and resilience in these children, particularly research that incorporates community perspectives and indigenous knowledge. Systematic documentation of factors influencing child outcomes is crucial for understanding the overall burden, informing policy and implementing targeted interventions. This study aimed at …

A Survey Of Nurse Practitioners' And Physician Assistants' Students' Preparedness And Interest In Utilizing Physical Activity In Patient Care, Barrett Snyder Jan 2025

A Survey Of Nurse Practitioners' And Physician Assistants' Students' Preparedness And Interest In Utilizing Physical Activity In Patient Care, Barrett Snyder

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Despite the well-documented benefits of physical activity (PA) for physical and mental health, as well as its role in preventing chronic disease and reducing mortality, most individuals fall short of meeting recommended PA guidelines. Although medical professionals recognize the value of PA counseling, several barriers, such as limited academic coverage, time constraints, and lack of reimbursement, have hindered its consistent implementation in clinical practice. To address these challenges, initiatives like Exercise is Medicine (EIM) promote integrating PA as a vital sign and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, including referrals to Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs), to support PA promotion. This evolving approach presents …

Food And Alcohol Disturbance Norms And Behaviors: Examining Their Association And The Role Of Gender, Victoria E. Peroni Jan 2025

Food And Alcohol Disturbance Norms And Behaviors: Examining Their Association And The Role Of Gender, Victoria E. Peroni

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) is a behavioral pattern that consists of compensatory behaviors, such as dietary restriction and exercise, which are used in conjunction with alcohol consumption. Despite growing research on FAD, its relationship with descriptive social norms and gender differences remains underexplored, particularly in non-college adult populations. The present study examined the prevalence of FAD behaviors, their associations with descriptive norms, and potential gender differences in these relationships. Using a broad-age adult sample recruited through Prolific (n = 727), item-level FAD descriptive norms were analyzed to determine their specific relationship with FAD behaviors. FAD descriptive norms were …

§1983 And The Federal Nursing Home Reform Act: A Perfect Fit, Sandra H. Johnson Jan 2025

§1983 And The Federal Nursing Home Reform Act: A Perfect Fit, Sandra H. Johnson

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

The Supreme Court rarely takes a case involving federal quality standards for nursing home care, and that alone would make Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County v. Talevski (Talevski) a significant case for those interested in long-term care. The Court’s decision in Talevski, however, reaches far beyond long-term care with implications for every federally funded program that relies on the states for administration, delivery of benefits, or enforcement of standards.

Much about the Talevski case signaled that a significant change in law may be coming. The plaintiff’s cause of action relied on a statutory instrument (§1983) frequently used by …

Dietary Patterns And Nutrition Education: A Comparison Of Eating Patterns, Physical Activity Levels And Nutrition Education Of Older Adults That Utilize Community Meal Assistance Services In The Community, Teresa A. Ridolfi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The older adult population is rapidly increasing, with projections indicating that 21% of the general population will be 65 years or older by 2030. This demographic shift is accompanied by a rise in health co-morbidities such as obesity, heart disease, certain types of cancers, and diabetes, which are exacerbated by inadequate nutrition and decreased physical function. This thesis examines dietary patterns, physical activity levels, and nutrition education among older adults utilizing community meal assistance services in Northern Illinois. The study aims to evaluate nutrient intakes, adherence to dietary guidelines, and physical activity levels among this population, using a descriptive epidemiological …
