Albuterol: An Often-Forgotten Cause Of Lactic Acidosis, Sania Moonnumackel, Sameera Muqueet, Machaiah Madhrira
North Texas Research Forum 2025
Introduction Lactic acid (LA) is a commonly used biomarker and is often indicative of severity of disease in critically ill patients. Lactic acidosis which is defined as LA > 4.0 can be divided into two categories: Type A which is the more common type is caused by systemic tissue hypoperfusion most likely due to shock and Type B which is caused by impairment of cellular metabolism and or decreased clearance of LA. An important cause of Type B lactic acidosis is medications including acetaminophen, anti-retroviral drugs, antibiotics and beta-adrenergic agonists including albuterol. Often patients with severe lactic acidosis are given fluid …

Exploring The Adoption, Perceptions, And Opportunities Of Artificial Intelligence Among Registered Dietitians In The United States, Hong Liu, Mariana Tadros, Edward Bitok, Liang Ji
Loma Linda University Research Reports
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping healthcare, yet its integration into nutrition and dietetics remains underexplored. This study investigates the adoption, perceptions, and opportunities related to AI technologies among Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) in the United States. Our survey was opened in April 2025 and is still ongoing, having gathered responses from over 70 RDNs. Findings reveal that while 58% of RDNs report some familiarity with AI, only 13% consider themselves very or extremely familiar. Attitudes toward AI are generally positive, with 56% viewing AI’s impact on dietetics as positive and 70% believing it could at least moderately improve patient outcomes. …

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
Maintaining optimal fertility in dairy cattle herds is a global challenge that is typically addressed through the genetic selection of fertility indicator traits. However, many of the traits currently implemented in breeding programs are heavily influenced by environmental factors, resulting in a slow rate of genetic improvement. Anogenital distance (AGD) has recently emerged as a promising fertility indicator trait due to its association with favorable reproductive outcomes and its higher heritability estimates compared with currently evaluated traits. This study aimed to enhance the understanding of AGD's genetic potential by estimating its genetic parameters in Canadian Holsteins, assessing the reliability …

Cultivating Quality Of Life: Assessing Diet, Physical Activity, And Mental Health Among Arab-American Breast Cancer Survivors - Uncovering Barriers And Facilitators For Holistic Well-Being, Nouf Ali Alhomaidhi
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the quality of life among Arab-American breast cancer survivors, with a particular emphasis on dietary practices, physical activity, and mental health. Despite increasing survivorship rates in this population, there remains a significant gap in the literature addressing their unique post-treatment experiences and needs. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, this study integrates quantitative survey data and qualitative narrative interviews to assess adherence to health behavior guidelines and to identify culturally specific barriers and facilitators to well-being. Quantitative findings indicated suboptimal adherence to recommended dietary and physical activity guidelines and highlighted prevalent psychological distress among participants. Thematic analysis …

Social Capital Of Urban School Counselors The Differences In Social Capital Between Counselors From Elite High Schools And Counselors From Public High Schools; And How That Capital Benefits Student Access To Selective Colleges, Candyce Simpson
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This study analyzed the differences in social capital between counselors from elite high schools in comparison to counselors from urban public schools and examined how that capital benefits student access to more selective colleges. Urban schools that serve more low-income population of students need support that appears to be commonplace to their counterparts at more elite high schools. Urban school counselors are considered a primary source of information, and they may not know what they do not know regarding college knowledge. The college application process is tedious; it can be characterized as a full-time job when persisting through the application …

Creating & Validating A Teacher Resilience Scale In The U.S. Context, Joy Mccreary
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The teaching force faces significant challenges, including high attrition rates and an aging workforce, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior research highlights teacher resilience as a critical factor in addressing these challenges, emphasizing its multi-dimensional and contextual nature. While several international scales have been developed to measure teacher resilience, none exist tailored to the unique educational landscape of the United States. This study developed and validated a U.S.-specific Teacher Resilience Scale (USMTRS), confirming its strong reliability and multidimensional structure. Findings showed that teacher resilience is widespread and most strongly tied to job satisfaction, while only weakly related to burnout. Results …

Fraud In Feeding Our Future: An Analysis Of “The Largest Pandemic Relief Fraud Scheme Yet”, Alena Johnston
Criminal Law Practitioner
Since the 1930s, the public school system in the United States has provided a distinct place for students to develop, learn, and grow. Public schools level the playing field for students in academics, allowing them to receive an education at no direct cost. However, students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds continue to face challenges, and their inability to secure nutritious meals can affect their ability to perform academically. In 1946, President Harry Truman signed the National School Lunch Act, forming the first Child Nutrition Program in the United States to remedy the food security issue.
The program was implemented as “a …

An Investigation Of Early Identification And Programs That Support Children With Inequitable Beginnings, Rena Ramiah
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
A body of research suggests that children from disadvantaged backgrounds have a gap in cognitive development that is set by age three (Roozbeh et al., 2016). This study examines if early identification of children with inequitable beginnings and conditions, and offering the support needed better prepares them for school (Simoncic et al., 2022). The research looks at programs established to address the equality and equity of education in a large suburban school district despite not qualifying for Head Start funding (National Academies of Sciences et al., 2020).
This research used qualitative and quantitative analysis within an associational investigation format, using …

Characterization Of The Slc7a5/Slc3a2 Amino Acid Transporter In Human Pleural Mesothelial Cells, Ann Francis
Characterization Of The Slc7a5/Slc3a2 Amino Acid Transporter In Human Pleural Mesothelial Cells, Ann Francis
Biotechnology Theses
The SLC7A5/SLC3A2 amino acid transporter moves essential amino acids, such as leucine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan, across the cellular plasma membrane. SLC7A5 overexpression was identified in diverse cancers, suggesting a role in tumorigenesis and cancer cell proliferation. However, the role of SLC7A5/SLC3A2 in other aggressive cellular phenotypes, including mesothelial mesenchymal transition (MesoMT), remains unexplored. RNA sequencing analyses identified SLC7A5 as one of three highly upregulated SLCs in mesothelial cell derived myofibroblasts. This sodium independent transporter exhibits a high affinity for branched chain amino acids such as leucine; however, what role, if any, this channel plays in MesoMT is unclear. SLC7A5 knockdown …
On “Self” Care, Suzanne A. Kim
On “Self” Care, Suzanne A. Kim
Connecticut Law Review
The dominant answer to popular calls for self care in everyday discourse is a thriving eleven billion dollar industry. The self care economy encompasses workplace wellness programs, consumer goods and services, and entrepreneurship. This infrastructure revolves around commercial consumers and providers and advances through conceptions of health and well-being centered on individuals.
Despite their prevalence, the concept and provision of self care have gone underexamined in legal critiques of societal underinvestment in care. This Article fills this gap by exploring the social construction of the dominant contemporary conception of self care in the United States, one that continues to be …

Objective: Most speech language pathologists (SLPs) receive training to work with patients with swallowing disorders in graduate school, focusing primarily on adult dysphagia. Although SLPs share common foundational knowledge and skills for adult and pediatric dysphagia populations, there are considerable differences in these two specialized areas of practice. We aimed to query SLPs’ practice patterns for dysphagia assessment and management for adults and pediatric populations to consider differences and guide training efforts.
Methods: We distributed two comprehensive anonymous surveys to explore practice patterns of SLPs who provide assessment and management of dysphagia for adult or pediatric populations. The 118 respondents, …

The Blue Economy Comes To Green Creek, Ursula Ramsey
The Blue Economy Comes To Green Creek, Ursula Ramsey
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
Oceans, touted as the “next great economic frontier,” are projected to contribute three trillion dollars to the global economy. Beyond their economic potential, oceans provide a host of environmental benefits: oceans supply over half of the planet’s oxygen and contain nearly all of the Earth’s water and biosphere. Especially because the high seas represent one of the few remaining global commons, oceans present a governance challenge. Meeting this challenge is the concept of the blue economy, a form of governance that combines environmental stewardship, economic development, and social equity. This article, in discussing Mulvihill v. South Carolina Department of Health …

A Route To Self-Determination: Empowering The West Papuan Region Through Targeted Special Autonomy Law Reforms And Iccpr/Icescr Integration, Maanasa Pamganamamula
Loyola University Chicago International Law Review
This Comment examines Indonesia’s governance over West Papua, analyzing how the 2001 Special Autonomy Law and its 2021 amendments have undermined Papuans’ right to self-determination. Although the 2001 law aimed to enhance regional autonomy and protect Indigenous rights, it has largely failed, fueling protests, human rights violations, and militarization. These ongoing issues trace back to the 1962 United States brokered “New York Agreement,” which transferred administrative control to Indonesia following Dutch withdrawal. By excluding Papuans from key decisions, such as the “Act of Free Choice,” Indonesia entrenched systemic abuses that continue to shape the region’s political landscape.

Image analysis can be useful for assessing crop health and predicting yield. Instead of expensive equipment, smartphones are considered an accessible and low-cost alternative. The objectives of this study were to evaluate whether fresh weight in green and red lettuce could be predicted by leaf color (intensity of green color measured by RGB) under different fertilizer treatments using RGB imaging from two widely used smartphone models (Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone). The two smartphones showed similar longitudinal patterns of RGB data (the intensity and dark green proportion), but the absolute difference in the RGB data was significantly different. Therefore, the …
