Hyperlipidemia, Acculturation, And Health Insurance Coverage In United States Foreign-Born Individuals, Debola Olayinka Ola

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hyperlipidemia is one of the modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the leading cause of death among minority populations in the United States, including foreign-born people. Therefore, preventing and treating hyperlipidemia alongside other CVD risk factors is critical for avoiding CVD. Prior research examined disparities in health insurance coverage, length of stay, and blood cholesterol with mixed observations over time with new immigrants. This study aimed to determine if there was a statistically significant association between language spoken at home, length of stay in the United States, having health insurance coverage or none, and high cholesterol level status among …

Early-Onset Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, Idine Mousavi, John Suffredini, Salim S Virani, Christie M Ballantyne, Erin D Michos, Arunima Misra, Anum Saeed, Xiaoming Jia

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Recent trends indicate a concerning increase in early-onset atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) among younger individuals (men aged < 55 years women aged < 65 years). These findings highlight the pathobiology of ASCVD as a disease process that begins early in life and underscores the need for more tailored screening methods and preventive strategies. Increasing attention has been placed on the growing burden of traditional cardiometabolic risk factors in young individuals while also recognizing unique factors that mediate risk of pre-mature atherosclerosis in this demographic such as substance use, socioeconomic disparities, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and chronic inflammatory states that contribute to the increasing incidence of early ASCVD. Additionally, mounting evidence has pointed out significant disparities in the diagnosis and management of early ASCVD and cardiovascular outcomes based on sex and race. Moving towards a more personalized approach, emerging data and technological developments using diverse tools such as polygenic risk scores and coronary artery calcium scans have shown potential in earlier detection of ASCVD risk. Thus, we review current evidence on causal risk factors that drive the increase in early ASCVD and highlight emerging tools to improve ASCVD risk assessment in young individuals.

Travel In A Snap: Addressing Transportation Barriers In Snap Recipients To Increase Food Security, Megan Saia Jan 2025

Travel In A Snap: Addressing Transportation Barriers In Snap Recipients To Increase Food Security, Megan Saia

Florida Law Review

Over thirty-eight million Americans experience food insecurity each year. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—the largest food assistance program in the United States—seeks to eliminate this statistic. As evidenced by the prevalence at which Americans continue to experience food insecurity, SNAP is far from reaching its goal. This shortcoming has sparked proposals to reform SNAP. These proposals are mainly aimed at increasing SNAP benefits so recipients can afford to purchase more food and thus become more food secure. Although many people agree that current SNAP benefits are inadequate, a widespread benefit increase is not feasible given the political fragility of …

Minerals And Human Health: From Deficiency To Toxicity, Mohammed S. Razzaque, Sunil J. Wimalawansa

School of Medicine Publications

Minerals are essential nutrients that play critical roles in human health by regulating various physiological functions. Examples include bone development, enzyme function, nerve signaling, and the immune response. Both the deficiencies and toxicities of minerals can have significant health implications. Deficiencies in macrominerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphate can lead to osteoporosis (associated with falls and fractures), cardiovascular events, and neuromuscular dysfunction. Trace mineral deficiencies, such as iron and zinc. Selenium deficiency impairs oxygen transport, immune function, and antioxidant defenses, contributing to anemia, delaying wound healing, and increasing susceptibility to infectious diseases. Conversely, excessive intake of minerals can have …

Epicurus And The Buddha On Desire, Andrew Alwood Jan 2025

Epicurus And The Buddha On Desire, Andrew Alwood

Comparative Philosophy

The philosophies of Epicurus and the Buddha aim to free us from suffering by helping us to recognize how ignorance and delusion lead us to pursue harmful desires. Since the problem lies in our attitudes, the solution is to change our attitudes. Like doctors healing the sick, they offer therapeutic practical advice, to remove the groundless opinions and the unhealthy desires that cause suffering. Although various misconceptions may lead us to conceive of these two thinkers as quite different with respect to values and ethics, there are remarkable similarities. Indeed, their practical advice for how to live has the same …

Introduction The UK national pediatric diabetes audit reports higher HbA1c for children and young people (CYP) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) of Black ethnicity compared with White counterparts. This is presumably related to higher mean blood glucose (MBG) due to lower socioeconomic status (SES) and less access to technology. We aimed to determine if HbA1c ethnic disparity persists after accounting for the above variables. Research design and methods A retrospective analysis of participants who received structured education in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) use was conducted at a tertiary center. HbA1c was paired with glucose metrics from 90-day CGM data. The …

In Search Of The Presumption Of Regularity, Aram A. Gavoor, Steven A. Platt

Florida Law Review

The presumption of regularity is an imprecise principle that federal courts apply in varying ways to presume federal officers and employees lawfully and consistently discharge their official duties. The presumption gained national significance during the Trump Administration in several key cases in which it was implicated, but the contours of the presumption were never described by the Supreme Court of the United States. While literature and judicial opinions have invoked the presumption, there has been sparse scholarly accounting for its contours, value, and legitimacy. This Article is the first to trace the contemporary domain of the presumption and its applications …
