Fontan Circulation And Transplantation: Considerations For The Complex Candidate., Drishti Tolani, Sharon Chen, Edo Bedzra, Kurt R. Schumacher, Shahnawaz Amdani

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The Fontan operation has transformed survival for patients with single ventricle congenital heart disease, but the long-term durability of this physiology remains limited. Fontan circulatory failure (FCF) is a progressive, heterogeneous condition associated with multiorgan dysfunction, lymphatic failure, and elevated post-transplant risk when not recognized early. With increasing survival into adulthood, heart transplantation has emerged as the definitive "fourth stage" of palliation. However, referrals for advanced therapies are often delayed, with many patients presenting in advanced stages of decline. This review synthesizes current evidence on the pathophysiology of Fontan failure, outlines consensus indications for transplant evaluation, and highlights pre-transplant strategies …

Hypertension Prevention Program And Its Effects On Blood Pressure Levels Among Young Adults In A Christian Community In Southwest Michigan, Cindel Hollancid

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background

Although the majority of patients who present are adults over the age of 40 years old; with blood pressures ranging from 140/88 – 190/110 and many times higher readings, it was intriguing and important to assess whether a direct intervention, teaching young adults ages 18 – 39 years the benefits of lifestyle choices would be beneficial as a preventative measure to implement for hypertension reduction patterns as one ages. According to Hinton et al. (2019), hypertension affects 1 in 8 adults between the ages of 20 and 40 years old and is thus common among young people; with the …

Data As Policy, Janet Freilich, W. Nicholson Price Ii Nov 2025

Data As Policy, Janet Freilich, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Faculty Scholarship

A large literature on regulation highlights the many different methods of policy-making: command-and-control rulemaking, informational disclosures, tort liability, taxes, and more. But the literature overlooks a powerful method to achieve policy objectives: data. The state can provide (or suppress) data as a regulatory tool to solve policy problems. For administrations with expansive views of government’s purpose, government-provided data can serve as infrastructure for innovation and push innovation in socially desirable directions; for administrations with deregulatory ambitions, suppressing or choosing not to collect data can reduce regulatory power or serve as a back-door mechanism to subvert statutory or common law rules. …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The capacity of crops to accumulate nanoplastics has remained relatively unexplored largely due to analytical constraints. To address this challenge, the present study employed a radiolabelling approach to demonstrate, for the first time, that polystyrene nanoplastics (14C-PS NPs) accumulate and move into the edible tissues of radishes (Raphanus sativus). Radishes were exposed hydroponically for five days, with only their non-fleshy roots in contact with the 14C-PS NPs, while accumulation in the fleshy (edible) roots and shoots was subsequently measured. The radish roots retained nearly 5 % of the 14C-PS NPs from the exposure, either through accumulation …

Metabolic plasticity allows cancer cells to survive under adverse conditions. To investigate the role of mitochondrial chaperone tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) in this process, we used CRISPR/Cas9 mediated genetic deletion to knock out (KO) TRAP1 in colon cancer cells. Depletion of TRAP1 triggered a series of events: induced metabolic reprogramming, increased glycolytic flux, downregulation of mitochondrial complex I, and elevated ROS generation. TRAP1-deficient cells showed tolerance to Oxidative Phosphorylation (OXPHOS) inhibitors and exhibited a higher extracellular acidification rate (ECAR). Additionally, TRAP1 depletion activated hypoxia response elements (HREs) and upregulated HIF1A target genes such as GLUT1 and MCT1. …

Risk Score Roulette: A Cautionary Tale Of Polygenic Risk Score Reliability, Diane Xue, Elizabeth E Blue, Alexis C Wood, Jerome I Rotter, Alison E Fohner

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Genetic risk prediction for Alzheimer's disease (AD) has high potential impact, yet few studies have assessed the reliability of various polygenic risk score (PRS) methods at the individual level. Here, we evaluated the reliability of AD PRS estimates among 6338 participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. We compared four PRS models that have been previously associated with dementia risk. Despite similar population-level performance metrics, inter-model reliability of individual-level risk assessment was low, even among individuals classified in the top and bottom deciles. These findings raise serious concerns about the downstream application of PRS for guiding interventions for AD.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the role of metabolic flexibility in determining perioperative outcomes. Metabolic flexibility, a key feature of metabolic health, is the ability to efficiently switch between different fuel sources (predominantly carbohydrates and fats) depending on energy demands and availability. Given the rapidly changing physiological conditions in the perioperative period, we hypothesized that good metabolic adaptability could mitigate postoperative complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study utilizing a prospectively collected, single-center preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) database of patients undergoing a range of major surgeries between 2012 and 2022. On day 3, patients were categorized into 3 groups …

Rectal Fidaxomicin As Salvage Therapy In Fulminant Clostridioides Difficile Infection After Total Colectomy: A Case Report, Akankcha Alok, Mohamed Ismail, Stephanie Pino Fabara, Mohammed Al Said, Vidya Sagar Kollu

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a significant cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis, ranging from mild to severe and potentially life-threatening conditions, like fulminant colitis with toxic megacolon and bowel perforation. The 2021 guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) recommend vancomycin and metronidazole for fulminant CDI (FCDI), with consideration of rectal vancomycin for cases with ileus. Fidaxomicin, though preferred for initial and recurrent CDI treatment, is not the first line for FCDI due to limited evidence. Fidaxomicin has a narrow spectrum of activity only targeting C difficile and …

Bad To The Bone: A Holistic Approach To Unravel Risk Factors Related To Tibial Bone Stress Injury In Young Distance Runners, Samuel Miller Lyons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are a prevalent overuse injury in endurance runners, particularly at the distal tibia. These injuries develop when repetitive mechanical loading exceeds the bone’s ability to adapt and recover, leading to microdamage accumulation and, in severe cases, fracture. While both mechanical loading and physiological factors such as bone mineral density (BMD) and energy availability are thought to contribute to BSI risk, they are rarely assessed together, and most mechanical assessments remain confined to laboratory settings. The objective of this dissertation was to develop practical methods to measure tibial compressive force (TCF) outside of the lab, examine how …

Detection Of Sweet Potato Feathery Mottle Virus Infection Via Remote Hyperspectral Imaging, Clayton Blake Oct 2025

Detection Of Sweet Potato Feathery Mottle Virus Infection Via Remote Hyperspectral Imaging, Clayton Blake

LSU Master's Theses

In sweetpotato, global production exceeds 90 million tons annually, yet yields are threatened by numerous pathogens, including the potyvirus sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV). Virus infections can reduce yields by 25–40%, but surveillance is hampered by asymptomatic infections and the labor-intensive nature of detection. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), combined with machine learning (ML), offers a promising pathway to scalable, non-destructive detection; however, studies focused on virus infection in sweetpotato remain limited.

This study demonstrates the feasibility of ML-enabled HSI for SPFMV detection under greenhouse conditions via a curated spectral library of two commercial cultivars, 'Beauregard' and 'Orleans', and the biological …

Reframing Nutrition Policy For Under-Five Children In Thailand: Beyond The First 1,000 Toward 2,500 Days, Saipin Chotivichien, Waraporn Jitaree, Wareethip Phuengpan, Saiyed M. Hyder

Indonesian Journal of Public Health Nutrition (IJPHN)

Malnutrition continues to threaten child health globally, with Thailand mirroring this trend: in 2022, 12.4% of children under five were stunted, 7.2% wasted, and 10.9% obese. While the country’s First 1,000 Days initiative—targeting pregnancy to age two—yielded early success in reducing undernutrition, emerging gaps among 3–5-year-olds prompted a policy shift toward a broader 2,500-day framework. This approach, launched in 2022, extends care from preconception through age five and integrates multisectoral action involving five key ministries. Anchored in the “Power of Three Pillars”—policy, partnerships, and resources—the initiative strengthens local governance, enhances service delivery, and fosters family and community engagement through sub-district …
