Transgenerational Imprints Of Sequential Herbivory Onsoybean Physiology And Fitness Traits, Insha Shaft, Rupesh Kariyat
Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Sequential herbivory leads to a multitude of effects on plants, influencing processes like growth, physiology, defense, and fitness. However, whether the sequential herbivore attack can elicit any transgenerational consequences is poorly examined. In this study, we show evidence of transgenerational impacts of sequential herbivory by two chewing herbivores, fall armyworm (Spodopterafrugiperda , FAW) and soybean looper (Chrysodeixis includens , SL) on soybean (Glycine max ) progeny. Seeds from the parents subjected to different herbivore sequences (SL-FAW: initial attack by SL followed by FAW and FAW-SL: FAW followed by SL) were used for the transgenerational experiment. Our main hypothesis was that …

Evaluation Of Triglyceride/High Density Lipoprotein Ratio As A Diagnostic And Prognostic Marker For Reduced Ejection Fraction Heart Failure In Comparison To Brain-Natriuretic Peptide, Safa Mohammed Hassan, Rawaa Hadi Shareef
Hilla University College Journal For Medical Science
Background: heart failure is a condition that heart cannot pump blood in efficient way and this result in building up fluid and a reduced supply of oxygen to organs. Also, it can result from conditions like heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes. Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) can be used in the diagnosis and evaluation of heart failure severity. The triglycerides-to-HDL ratio is a key marker of cardiovascular risk in heart failure, reflecting insulin resistance and metabolic health. A high ratio is associated with worse outcomes, including increased inflammation and arterial stiffness.
Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of Triglyceride …

Defective placentation is a recognized etiology for several gestational complications that include early pregnancy loss, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction. Sustained viability, migration, and invasion are essential cellular properties for embryonic extravillous trophoblasts to execute their roles in placental development and function, while derailment of these cellular processes is linked to placental disorders. Although the cellular functions of extravillous trophoblasts are well recognized, our understanding of the pivotal molecular determinants of these functions is incomplete. Using the HTR-8/SVneo immortalized human extravillous trophoblast cell line, we report that steroid receptor coactivator-2 (SRC-2), a coregulator of transcription factor-mediated gene expression, is essential …

Homage to Alexander von Humboldt: Travels to and from Spain Throughout the Centuries / Homenaje a Alexander von Humboldt: Viajes hacia y desde España de todos los siglos
José Mariano Mociño traveled extensively in New Spain and helped to collect and classify thousands of plants according to modern scientific protocols. In addition, Mociño made significant contributions to science in geology, ethnology, epidemiology, ornithology and horticulture. He was in the vanguard of the study of native Mexican medicinal plants and played a crucial role in the control of infectious disease in the colony and the mother country. Although a contemporary of Alexander von Humboldt, the two never met. Nonetheless, the Prussian traveler was well aware of the accomplishments of Mociño. In his Ensayo politico sobre el Reino de la …

Comparison Of Autograft, Allograft, And Conduits For Peripheral Upper Extremity Nerve Repair A Critical Review Of The Current State Of Bone Grafting In Orthopaedic Surgery, Samantha Meacock
Bone Bulletin
Introduction
Several mechanisms of injury can cause peripheral nerve injury (PNI) and subsequent impaired quality of life with loss of motor and/or sensory function. Trauma is a common cause of injury with the most commonly injured nerves being the radial (53%), ulnar (32%), and median nerves (15%).1 The preferred treatment for PNI is reconnecting severed nerve ends anatomically with tension-free end-to-end direct nerve repair of healthy fascicles. However, if the nerve ends cannot be brought together without tension, gapping can occur, and a direct tension-less repair is not possible.5 In the case of a lengthy nerve gap, a …
Innovative Pain Management Protocols In Orthopedics And Their Role In Reducing Postoperative Opioid Use, Jake Lamonaca
Innovative Pain Management Protocols In Orthopedics And Their Role In Reducing Postoperative Opioid Use, Jake Lamonaca
Bone Bulletin
Background
The opioid epidemic has emerged as one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time, marked by significant increases in opioid-related dependence, abuse, and death in recent years. Excess prescription of opioids represents a major contributing factor to this crisis.1 The origins and impact of the opioid epidemic in the United States are documented in Sam Quinones research narrative, Dreamland. He highlights how pharmaceutical companies leveraged misinterpreted research—particularly a 1980 letter published in The New England Journal of Medicine suggesting a low risk of addiction associated with opioids—to normalize their widespread prescription. This flawed evidence served …

Transesophageal echocardiography is a relatively safe procedure; however, there are rare complications associated with it. Multiple attempts during TEE can lead to injury of hypopharyngeal or parapharyngeal wall leading to an infection. Here, we describe a case of hypopharyngeal-parapharyngeal abscess resulting from multiple TEE attempts during cardioversion leading to a prolonged hospital course.

Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN) is a rare syndrome, characterized by extensive circumferential necrosis of the esophageal mucosa at the gastroesophageal junction. AEN carries significant morbidity and mortality, and early recognition is crucial for management. We present a case series of AEN in two critically ill patients, one who presented with coffee ground emesis and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and the other one who presented with upper gastrointestinal bleed in the setting of malignancy and concurrent infection with active antibiotic use. Prompt diagnosis and management of both AEN and its underlying causes are crucial to improve patient outcomes.

Despite lung cancer affecting all races and ethnicities, disparities are observed in incidence and mortality rates among different ethnic groups in the United States. Non-Hispanic African Americans had a high incidence rate of lung cancer at 55.8 per 100 000 people, as well as the highest death rate at 37.2 per 100 000 people from 2016 to 2020. While previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over 45 susceptibility risk loci that influence lung cancer development, few GWAS have investigated the etiology of lung cancer in African Americans. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted GWAS of lung cancer …

Neutrophils are highly abundant in the oral mucosal tissues, and their balanced activation and clearance are essential for immune homeostasis. Here, we demonstrate that neutrophils infected with the bacterial pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) are captured alive by macrophages in a manner that bypasses all known receptor-ligand interactions involved in the phagocytosis of either live or dead cells. Mechanistically, upon interaction with Pg, or its protease RgpB (gingipains), live neutrophils undergo rapid remodeling of their proteomes, generating neoepitopes. N-terminomics-based proteomic profiling identified multiple RgpB cleavage sites on several azurophilic granule proteins that are translocated to the surface of live neutrophils via …
