Snake Optimization Algorithm For Fractional Order Controller In Three-Area Load Frequency Regulation, Shubra Goel, Omveer Singh
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The transition toward renewable energy-dominated power systems have accentuated the intricacies of frequency control, necessitating advanced regulatory mechanisms. This investigation articulates a tri-zonal frequency stabilization approach, employing a hybridized controller that synergizes Fuzzy Fractional-Order PI and Tilt-Integral-Derivative methodologies. The uniqueness of this approach is further amplified by the deployment of the Snake Optimization algorithm for precise parameter tuning. Set within a conventional grid topology integrated with assorted renewable energy sources, the study evaluates the controller’s adaptability and resilience through a series of comprehensive scenario-based analyses.

Bouncing Back Or Forward? Two Approaches To Democratic Resilience After Extremist Attacks, Selen A. Ercan, Jordan Mcswiney, Emily Beausoleil, Claire Fitzpatrick, Andrea Felicetti
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Violent extremist attacks pose a serious threat to democracy, undermining its institutions, norms and practices. This article examines the disruptive impact of violent extremism on the public sphere and considers the role of political leaders in responding to these challenges. Leaders are widely recognised as the key actors shaping the public discourse after extremist attacks, by either reinforcing or resisting the division intended by these attacks. Yet, their role in building democratic resilience – that is, fostering the public sphere’s ability to respond to extremist attacks without compromising its democratic commitments – remains underexplored. Drawing on a range of case …

Enhancing Intrusion Detection Systems With Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems, Jitender Sharma, Sonia ., Karan Kumar, Pankaj Jain, Pankaj Jain, Hussein Alkattan
Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity
Network security has become increasingly critical in recent years. Among the various aspects of network security and considering several approaches to network security, intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have gained considerable attention. The prominence of this factor, among other factors of network security, is due to its ability to address the complex and uncertain nature of security breaches. Whenever data flow over the network, precise categorization of normal and malicious data is necessary. Past IDS systems lack precise categorization. Thus, the present study focuses on the use of the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) as a classifier to categorize network instances …

How do children learn the language-to-concept mappings within the domain of Mechanical Support - a spatial domain involving varied and complex force-dynamic relations between objects based on specific mechanisms (stickiness, clips, etc.)? We explore how four- and six-year-olds, and adults encode dynamic events and static configurations of Mechanical Support via attachment (picture put on a door). Participants viewed spatial configurations (Experiment 1 - in dynamic events or Experiment 2 - in static states) and were then prompted with the question, "Can you tell me what my sister did with my toy?"Children and adults used lexical verbs, and the visibility of …
The Grammar Of Approximating Number Pairs (Anps) In Mandarin Chinese, Xuehuai He
The Grammar Of Approximating Number Pairs (Anps) In Mandarin Chinese, Xuehuai He
Pomona Senior Theses
"There are twenty or thirty people." What exactly does this mean? Is it exactly twenty or thirty, or is it an approximate range? What about "twenty or twenty-six people"?
Approximating number pairs (ANPs) are a kind of approximative expression that takes a number pair and expresses a quantity close to it. There are constraints on the structure and choice of numerals: many combinations would be ungrammatical or denote a precise disjunction rather than being approximative. Studies like Eriksson et al. (2010) statistically generalized the grammar of ANPs through corpus studies on select European languages. However, these surface-level generalizations fail to …

This thesis examines the San Francisco Bay Area’s vulnerability to sea-level rise (SLR), highlighting the importance of equity and community engagement in adaptation planning. The study integrates geospatial data and qualitative community input using a GIS Story Map to identify Points of Interest (POIs)—such as schools, hospitals, and public transportation routes—and assess SLR vulnerabilities across social, economic, geographic, and contamination dimensions. Case studies, such as the Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan, demonstrate the limitations of large-scale policies in accommodating diverse communities and highlight the effectiveness of community-driven strategies. The thesis also explores innovative approaches to community engagement in educational settings and …
Maurice Sendak’S Trio, And What Good Picture Books Have To Say, Eli F. Protas
Maurice Sendak’S Trio, And What Good Picture Books Have To Say, Eli F. Protas
Pomona Senior Theses
When we teach children how to read, we start with picture books. We do this despite the fact that picture books blend visual and verbal storytelling in ways that require nuanced understandings of both elements. Rather than studying these aspects individually, a complete picture book analysis relies on examining the intersection of words and images, how they interact structurally and how each lends meaning to the other. To understand how to better close read picture books, this thesis turns to the stories of Maurice Sendak, a picture book writer and illustrator whose work redefined the relationship between words and images …
Behavior Or Diagnosis? Comparing Explicit And Implicit Biases Of School-Based Professionals Towards Adhd And Asd, Vincent Rutherford
Behavior Or Diagnosis? Comparing Explicit And Implicit Biases Of School-Based Professionals Towards Adhd And Asd, Vincent Rutherford
Pomona Senior Theses
Previous research shows bias against people with ADHD and ASD both in and outside of the classroom and demonstrates that access to a diagnosis impacts educator’s beliefs about a child. ADHD and ASD have a high level of diagnostic co-occurrence, as well as symptom overlap beneath the clinical threshold. The current study uses a vignette-length description of a student, an explicit bias questionnaire, and an Implicit Association Test to assess the relationship between implicit and explicit bias, as well as how educator bias is impacted by the diagnosis they have access to. Results suggest no statistically significant differences between explicit …

Empowering Digital Consent: A Risk-Focused Due Diligence Tool, Bar Fargon Mizrahi
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
We live in an era of almost infinite digital interactions, many of which involve risks to our rights stemming from various problematic practices, such as data-protection infringements, user profiling, and consumer protection violations. Currently, the protection of digital consumers against these risks rests primarily on a "notice-and-consent" regulatory model-users are legally presumed to have consented to the terms of service (ToS) and privacy policy agreements (PPAs) of the digital services they use. In reality, despite the gravity of the risks involved, users routinely fail to study these binding agreements. Thus, it is widely accepted that this model is ineffective at …

Language Models' Verbatim Copying: Copyright Infringement Analysis Through The Lens Of The New York Times Co. V. Microsoft Corp., Openai, Inc. Et Al., Tian "Tony" Chen
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
In their high-profile suit in late 2023, The New York Times Company ("The Times") alleged that OpenAI's Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) language models might output "near-verbatim" copies ("memorizations") of the works of The Times based on certain user prompts and thus might have infringed on The Times's exclusive rights over its content. One of the central issues is whether the embodiment of unauthorized reproductions of Times content in the GPT models constitutes a copyright infringement. This comment argues that OpenAI might have a colorable fair use affirmative defense despite the plaintiff's prima facie copyright infringement claim.

Social media platforms such as Reddit are widely used for sharing and consuming information. User-generated content poses a great risk for misinformation creation and dissemination on these platforms. “Fake news”, as it is commonly referred to, has far-reaching social implications, swaying public perception, making political viewpoints more radical, and adversely impacting health decisions. The covariable features that come with fake news make it even harder to detect because it is presented in the form of text, images, videos, and even social interactions. This paper describes a novel method for detecting fake news on Reddit: RIFT, short for Reddit Information Falsity …
