The Effectiveness Of Screencast Corrective Feedback On L2 English Academic Writing, Ming Cheng
The Effectiveness Of Screencast Corrective Feedback On L2 English Academic Writing, Ming Cheng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
While research indicates that written corrective feedback (WCF) can promote learning of language and writing skills (Ferris, 2004; Bitchener, 2008), both students and teachers report persistent limitations. Students often find written comments difficult to interpret, while teachers consider them time-consuming to provide. Screencast corrective feedback (SCF) offers an alternative by utilizing screen recording technology to deliver audiovisual cues and personalized explanations that can reduce ambiguity and foster rapport (Harper et al., 2012). However, existing studies on SCF have largely emphasized learner perceptions rather than its measurable impact on language development (Cheng & Li, 2020). This dissertation investigates the comparative effectiveness …
Bomba E: Tradition And Eclecticism In Selected Choral Works Of Ángel "Cucco" Peña, Luis F. Gonzalez
Bomba E: Tradition And Eclecticism In Selected Choral Works Of Ángel "Cucco" Peña, Luis F. Gonzalez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This monograph presents a musical analysis of three choral works by Puerto Rican composer Ángel “Cucco” Peña: Negra Majestad, Bomba E, and Aleluya Criollo. Although Peña is widely recognized for his contributions to popular music and production, these pieces highlight a lesser-known side of his creative output in the choral realm. Each work draws from traditional Puerto Rican genres—bomba, plena, and aguinaldo—while incorporating modern compositional techniques that reflect Peña’s eclectic style and his engagement with both popular and classical traditions.
The study situates these pieces within their historical and cultural contexts, particularly the African diaspora’s …
Breathing In Two Languages: Inclusive Sel For Multilingual Learners, Mylia Briggs, Monica Gonzalez Smith
Breathing In Two Languages: Inclusive Sel For Multilingual Learners, Mylia Briggs, Monica Gonzalez Smith
Journal of English Learner Education
As multilingual learners (MLs) represent the fastest-growing student demographic in U.S. public schools, educators face increasing pressure to support these students’ academic and socio-emotional needs. Traditional social-emotional learning (SEL) frameworks often align with Eurocentric norms and overlook the cultural and linguistic assets of MLs. This action research self-study investigates a third-grade teacher’s implementation of culturally responsive, equity-oriented SEL (CRSEL) practices in an urban public school in Hawai‘i. Through adapted SEL lessons centered on gratitude, students engaged in activities that integrated home languages, cultural traditions, and identity-affirming practices. Findings reveal three key themes: self-awareness as validating and emancipatory, social awareness as …

Transdisciplinarity Through A Functional Approach In The Content Areas: Commonalities For School Teachers, Karen L. Terrell, Luciana C. De Oliveira, Jia Gui
Transdisciplinarity Through A Functional Approach In The Content Areas: Commonalities For School Teachers, Karen L. Terrell, Luciana C. De Oliveira, Jia Gui
Journal of English Learner Education
In 2020, the WIDA Consortium released a revised English language development standards framework that integrates a functional approach to language development, grounded in systemic functional linguistics, across core subjects: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Central to this framework are four Key Language Uses—Narrate, Inform, Explain, and Argue. While this holistic approach is promising, it poses challenges for elementary and middle-grade teachers and ESOL specialists, who often teach multiple subjects. To ensure all teachers can implement this approach effectively, the integration of functional language must be simplified for generalist instructors. This article explores how identifying linguistic commonalities across …

Exploring Language Through Systemic Functional Linguistics: Importance Of Communicating And Developing Academic Language For Multilingual Learners, Yana Shifrina-Piljovin
Exploring Language Through Systemic Functional Linguistics: Importance Of Communicating And Developing Academic Language For Multilingual Learners, Yana Shifrina-Piljovin
Journal of English Learner Education
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a comprehensive theory of language that offers a unique perspective on how we use language to communicate and create meaning. SFL provides educators with a powerful theoretical framework for understanding how language functions in various contexts and how this knowledge can be applied to enhance classroom instruction. Developed by linguist Michael Halliday in the 1960s, SFL has become an influential framework for understanding linguistic metafunctions, from everyday conversations to academic discourse. The "systemic" aspect of SFL refers to the idea that language is a network of systems, each offering a set of choices for expressing …
The Benefit Of Qualified English Language Teachers In Non-English-Speaking Countries, Tina M. Allen-Abulhassan
The Benefit Of Qualified English Language Teachers In Non-English-Speaking Countries, Tina M. Allen-Abulhassan
Journal of English Learner Education
Abstract
This study explores the impact of qualified English language teachers on English Language Learners (ELLs) in their home countries, assessing how English language instruction can enhance their preparedness for higher education in Western universities. The need for effective English language education is underscored by the scarcity of qualified ESL instructors, which leaves L2 learning ill-equipped for academic success. Utilizing Vygotsky’s social development theory, particularly the Zone of Proximal Development, this research examines the role of social interactions with qualified native speakers in fostering language proficiency and academic achievement. The literature review highlights significant barriers ELLs face, including inadequate teaching …

Child Benefit Cash Transfers In Ireland And Canada: A Comparative Analysis Of Welfare Policy, Ang D. Lee
Child Benefit Cash Transfers In Ireland And Canada: A Comparative Analysis Of Welfare Policy, Ang D. Lee
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
Child benefit programs involving periodic cash transfers to parents have become increasingly embraced by governments worldwide. This paper investigates policy variance between child benefit cash transfers in Ireland and Canada, two countries with ostensibly similar welfare states. While Canadian child benefits shrink as household income grows, in Ireland cash transfers are set at a universal flat rate that is irrespective of family circumstance. On the other hand, Canadian parents receive far more generous payouts than their Irish counterparts despite means-testing. To determine the drivers of such policy divergence, I empirically test six theoretical paradigms from literature by leveraging several cross-national …

Equity In Action: Transformative Leadership And Anti-Racist Praxis In Canadian K-12 Schools, Ayodeji Osiname
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
This paper examines how Canadian K-12 schools, amidst growing diversity, have historically marginalized certain student groups, perpetuating inequities. It explores the roles of school principals in reversing these trends and creating inclusive, equitable, and safe environments for all. The paper uses two theoretical frameworks—Transformative Leadership theory and Anti-Racist theory—to guide principals in fostering inclusive school cultures. The synergies and distinctions between these frameworks are analyzed to advocate for an integrated approach. Together, these frameworks provide a comprehensive lens for school leadership. School leaders must engage in self-reflection, collaboration, and resilience to cultivate social justice-oriented school cultures. The integration of Transformative …

Regards
The contributions of this special issue demonstrate a renewed scholarly interest in popular music in the Middle East in recent years. In the face of resilient Arab authoritarianism and the continuing ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians, it is not surprising that many scholars seek to identify a glimmer of hope in the everyday cultural practices of the dominated. The two volumes under consideration are representative of this scholarly impetus, as well as the challenges it must overcome to attain a better understanding of “music in everyday life”: namely articulating art and politics without collapsing one into the other, and resisting …
Sonic Acts Of Care: Friendship-Based Networks And Grassroots Activism In Beirut, Rim J. Irscheid
Sonic Acts Of Care: Friendship-Based Networks And Grassroots Activism In Beirut, Rim J. Irscheid
Regards
The article examines a Beirut-based network of self-funded, independent musicians that translate memories and their emotions into artistic and activist practices. Drawing on musical albums created since the 2020 Beirut port explosion, the article explores the social and emotional impact of artist-run spaces for music production. Focusing on a friendship-based network around the collectively-run recording studio Tunefork Studios, it examines how care, trust, and solidarity with Lebanon’s citizens and music producers are translated into both their creative practices and their production and distribution strategies. I argue that Beirut-based musicians increasingly thematise the emotional toll and personal investment in political, infrastructural …

The Ego Between Pride And Defeat In Al-Baroudi’S Poetry: A Stylistic Study, Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz Bin Qalil Al-Harthi
UB Journal for Humanities
The ego has a clear presence in Al-Baroudi’s poetic corpus, serving as a primary gateway to understanding his poetic experience. The current research discussed Al-Baroudi’s tools and linguistic and artistic approaches for expressing the manifestations of the ego, its diversity, and the resources of its pride and defeat. It has adopted the stylistic approach as a guiding beacon; it examined Al-Baroudi’s ego from four perspectives, respectively: the poetic ego, the knightly ego, the loving ego and the complaining ego. The research demonstrated that Al-Baroudi depended in his pride on affirmative and non-affirmative nominal declarative sentences and on verbal sentences beginning with …

How Social, Behavioral, And Policy Factors Impact Water Satisfaction And Management In Urban Areas, Rafi Haikal, Thoriqi Firdaus, Siti Hilya Nabila, Rizqi Shafira Chairunnisa
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
The issue of water management in Indonesia’s specific urban contexts, specifically in Surabaya as an industrial hub and Bali as a tourist destination, is of paramount importance due to its impact on public health and environmental sustainability. This study analyses water management and conservation factors by comparing two distinct urban areas. The research design employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), which involves a specialised approach for analysing the complex relationships between variables. The results of the analysis indicate that community attitudes in Surabaya, facilitated by infrastructure and technology, significantly predicts intention to perform (β=0.334, p<0.001) and water management satisfaction (β=0.409, p<0.001). In contrast, collaboration with the government enhances environmental constraints (β=0.285, p<0.003) and water management satisfaction (β=0.140, p<0.044). In Bali, where water management is based on traditional practices, community attitudes do not significantly affect water management satisfaction (β=0.095, p>0.431). Still, perceived …0.001)>

Fengge Or Wenbi?: An Interpretation Of Fan Xiheng's Translation Of Buffon's Discourse On Style And Reflection On The Theory Of Modern Literary Style, Yue Ren, Aibin Yao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
For a long time, the academic community has regarded Fan Xiheng's “On Fengge” (published in the September 1957 issue of The Translation) as the authoritative translation of Buffon's “Discours Sur Le Style” (Discourse on Style). However, in the 1958 edition of Selected Works of Comte de Buffon, also translated by Fan, the speech appears under a different title, “On Wenbi”. Based on Fan's other translated works, it can be inferred that “On Wenbi” is the original version endorsed by the translator, while “On Fengge” is highly likely a version revised by the editors of The …

Distanciation And Belonging: Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutic Detour In Textual Interpretation, Youfeng Hu, Haixia Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In his reconsideration of Descartes's “Cogito,” Paul Ricoeur constructs a philosophy of reflection that emphasizes understanding one's subjectivity through the mediation of the other, such as symbols and texts. The introduction of textual mediation means that self-understanding is no longer self-evident; rather, readers encounter a concrete engagement with four types of “distanciation”: between saying and the said, authorial intention and textual meaning, the world of the text and the world of reality, and “moi” and “soi.” Ricoeur assigns a productive and positive meaning to distanciation, establishing methodological practices grounded in existential foundations, linking structuralist linguistics with deep semantics, and outlining …

Attention Mapping For Hallucination Reduction In Arabic Financial Using Retrieval-Augmented Generation Systems, Hasan Abdulameer Hasan, Khaldoun H. Al-Hussayni, Ali Z. K. Matloob
Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity
This research introduces a customized attention visualization framework for mitigating hallucinations in Arabic Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems tailored for financial document analysis. The proposed architecture extends MarBERT with a dual-stage attention supervision mechanism and a hallucination-aware loss formulation, trained on a newly constructed dataset of 7,000 annotated Arabic financial query-context pairs. A grounding alignment score is computed over attended tokens, and generated responses are rejected when falling below a dynamically adjusted precision-aware threshold, serving as the core decision-making approach for hallucination detection. The system achieves 95.04% classification accuracy, 95.84% precision, 94.12% recall, and an F1 score of 94.97%, outperforming AraELECTRA and …

Worker Rights In Collective Bargaining, Benjamin W. Arold, Elliott Ash, W. Bentley Macleod, Suresh Naidu
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) specify the contractual rights of unionized workers, but their full legal content has not yet been analyzed by economists. This paper develops novel natural language methods to analyze the empirical determinants and economic value of these rights using a new collection of 30,000 CBAs from Canada in the period 1986-2015. We parse legally binding rights (e.g., “workers shall receive. . . ”) and obligations (e.g., “the employer shall provide. . . ”) from contract text, and validate our measures through evaluation of clause pairs and comparison to firm surveys on HR practices. Using timevarying province-level variation …

In today's globalized world, the pursuit of better opportunities has led to a significant increase in immigration and foreign labor. This trend is particularly evident in Bangladesh, where many workers migrate annually to destinations such as Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Understanding the sentiments and emotions of these workers is crucial to preventing crimes, suicides, political unrest, and other security issues in host countries. As maximum workers usually come from rural Bangladeshi communicate they use local dialect for conversations and very popular widely used local dialect known as Pabnaia. This study did not identify any prior research specifically …
