Musculoskeletal infections represent a significant proportion of the clinical workload for infectious diseases (ID) providers, often presenting complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Many providers may feel inadequately prepared to manage these conditions, which require a nuanced understanding of microbiology, musculoskeletal anatomy, surgical intervention, and orthopedic hardware. We implemented a pair of educational interventions including an online library of high-yield musculoskeletal ID literature and an educational podcast. © The Author(s) 2025. Background: Mitis group non-pneumococcal streptococci (MGNPS), specifically Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus infantis and Streptococcus oralis, have recently been shown to cause pneumonia and/or bacteremia. These organisms often have capsular (cps) operons resembling those in pneumococci, and some express cps-generated polysaccharides that antigenically cross-react with pneumococcal capsular serotypes. But, to date, a series of MGNPS isolates has not been studied by electron microscopy (EM) for the presence of a capsule.
Methods: We studied 21 MGNPS; 11 were isolated from sputum and determined to have caused pneumonia, 3 were isolated from blood, and 7 were commensal isolates cultured …

Oral candidiasis (OC) is caused by Candida albicans, targeting immunocompromised individuals and developing drug resistance, highlighting the need for advanced therapeutics. Polyphenols such as caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and ellagic acid (EA) display antifungal and immune-modulating properties. Incorporating CAPE and EA in gellan gum (GG) formulation enhances their applicability and effectiveness against OC. We developed GG-based formulations loaded with CAPE (1,000 µg/mL), EA (1,000 µg/mL), or CAPE + EA (1,000 µg/mL each) against C. albicans. GG formulations containing gellan (0.6% and 1.0%), genipin (5 mM), polyethylene glycol 400 (0.5%), and sorbitan monooleate 80 (0.5%) demonstrated enhanced release …

Association Of Covid-19 Status With Maternal And Neonatal Outcomes Among Pregnant Women At Mombasa County Referral Hospital, Kenya, Salome Mghoi Rajab
MSc in Advanced Practice Midwifery
Background: COVID-19 pandemic has raised global concern regarding maternal and neonatal health owing to physiological and immunological changes that may heighten disease severity. Despite the global evidence linking COVID-19 infection with unfavorable pregnancy outcomes, data from Sub-Saharan Africa remain limited. This leaves an essential vacuum in our understanding of how COVID-19 status affects maternal and neonatal outcomes in counties like Mombasa, where health-care system problems may alter risks. Vertical transmission remains a puzzle to be solved.
Aim: To assess the association of COVID-19 status on maternal and neonatal outcomes between March 2020 to March 2022.
Methodology: A …

Private Functional Wildlife Trusts, Stuart W. Babcock
ACTEC Law Journal
Public wildlife law is clear: wild animals exist and are managed for the public writ large. This is a mistake. Wild animals are beings of moral concern; their lives can be good or bad, better or worse, and they should be treated accordingly. This article explores a novel legal instrument which can account for wild animals' unique interests and circumstances: private wildlife trusts, in which wild animals are the trust beneficiaries. Wildlife trusts pose distinctive management and implementation challenges. This article aims to provide a path forward for wildlife advocates seeking new tools to protect wild animals and the habitats …

Are Ai-Assisted Drug Technologies Addressing Or Aggravating The Opioid Crisis In The United States?, Abby O'Hern
West Virginia Law Review
The opioid crisis is a significant public health emergency, intensified by the rise of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. Lawmakers have described fentanyl as “terroristic in nature” due to its often-fatal properties. According to the Center for Disease Control (“CDC”), an estimated 107,543 people died from drug overdoses in the United States in 2023. As fentanyl use has surged, it has increasingly shaped public health policy through harm reduction initiatives, expanded addiction treatment resources, and legislative reforms aimed at curbing overdose deaths. Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) now plays a dual role in this evolving crisis. While AI technologies offer valuable tools …

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the necessity of effective face masks in both public and healthcare settings for mitigating the spread of disease. However, traditional face masks impede communication, posing significant challenges for approximately 13% of the general population and 10% of healthcare and social assistance workers who have hearing loss and who rely on lipreading and other non-verbal cues. Traditional surgical masks and N95 respirator masks serve important roles in healthcare, but they differ in levels of protection. Currently, a transparent surgical mask is available, but not an N95 version. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the usability, fit, …

Bmp Signaling Co-Regulation Of Immune Response And Lipid Metabolism, Katerina K. Yamamoto
Bmp Signaling Co-Regulation Of Immune Response And Lipid Metabolism, Katerina K. Yamamoto
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs) are secreted peptide ligands of the Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β) family, initially identified for their roles in development and differentiation across animal species. They are now increasingly recognized for their roles in physiology and infectious disease. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, the BMP ligand DBL-1 controls fat metabolism and immune response, in addition to its roles in body size regulation and development. DBL-1 regulates classical aspects of innate immunity, including the induction of anti-microbial peptides. We theorized that BMP-dependent regulation of fat metabolism could also promote resilience against microbial pathogens. We found that …

“Lead”Ing Industrial Science: Studying Occupational Lead Poisoning In The Early 20th Century, Rebekah E. Dreyer-Rowe
Master's Theses and Capstones
Lead was essential to the creation and coalescence of industrial hygiene as a discipline in the United States from its early days in the 1910s through the 1930s when the first professional associations of industrial hygiene were formed. In the early years, Alice Hamilton was central to the burgeoning field, and her seminal study on lead poisoning in Illinois industries thrust both her and her methods into the spotlight. Industrial hygienists of her generation followed her methods and came away with similar conclusions: that occupational diseases were rampant in the US, even if few people were studying them. In the …
