Food Safety Concerns: A Review On Pathogenic Microbes Associated With Common Edible Insects, Anitha Philbert
Food Safety Concerns: A Review On Pathogenic Microbes Associated With Common Edible Insects, Anitha Philbert
Tanzania Journal of Science
This review explored the pathogenic microbes associated with common edible insects. With rising human populations and fluctuating food supplies, edible insects offer a rich source of protein, vitamins, and minerals and are culturally accepted in many regions. Despite their nutritional benefits, knowledge on microbial hazards associated with edible insects is fragmented. The review focuses on commonly consumed species, including Tenebrio molitor, Zophobas morio, Acheta domesticus, Gryllus bimaculatus, Locusta migratoria, Ruspolia differens, Bombix mori, Bunaea alcinoe, and Oryctes monoceros. A total of 43 pathogenic bacteria and 20 pathogenic fungi linked to these edible insect species were identified. The most frequently reported …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the common liver cancer, exhibits higher incidence in males. Here, we report that mice lacking bile acid (BA) regulators, Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR also termed NR1H4) and Small Heterodimer Partner (SHP also termed NR0B2), recapitulate the sex difference in liver cancer risk. Since few therapeutic options are available, we focused on understanding the intrinsic protection afforded to female livers. Transcriptomic analysis in control and NR1H4 and NR0B2 double knockout livers identified female-specific changes in metabolism, including amino acids, lipids, and steroids. To assess translational relevance, we examined if transcriptomic signatures obtained from this murine HCC model correlate …

Recent evidence highlights the significance of a new type of tumour suppressors, which are not frequently mutated but inhibited by metabolic cues in cancers. Here, we identify BATF2 as a tumour suppressor whose expression is epigenetically silenced by glutamine in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas (HNSCC). BATF2 correlates with type-I interferon and Th1 signatures in human HNSCC, with correlation coefficients even stronger than those of the positive control, STING. The phosphorylation of BATF2 at serine 227 promotes the oligomerization of STING. BATF2 deficiency or high glutamine levels result in higher oxygen consumption rates and metabolic profiles unfavorable for …

Theorizing ‘Magwangala’ As An Unorthodox Livelihood In Geita, Tanzania, Albert Tibaijuka
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
The increasing contestation of Magwangala as a livelihood in Geita, Tanzania, invokes a scholarly desire to further the constitution of the term beyond its traditional constructs. Following the present framing of magwangala as a disruptive, hazardous, contentious, and risky engagement; including the sanctions against it and the disparaging remarks upsurging the oppression of its actors, an attempt to advance its comprehension is of paramount importance. Given the nature of Magwangala business and the evident ramifications, its contestation is inevitable and unlikely to yield a uniform understanding. This paper, therefore, draws from the grueling life experiences endured by magwangala dealers in …

Empirical Analysis Of Machine Learning Models For Predicting Equipment Failures Using Iot Sensor Data, Yusuf Shodiyevich Avazov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
This article examines the problem of detecting and predicting industrial equipment faults using IoT sensor data through machine learning techniques. Sensor readings such as temperature, vibration, pressure, voltage, and current, as well as FFT-based features, were statistically analyzed. Class imbalance and low signal informativeness were identified as key factors limiting model accuracy. Results obtained from Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and XGBoost models were comparatively evaluated, showing that when ROC-AUC values remain around 0.5, distinguishing fault and non-fault states becomes challenging. Correlation and feature-importance analyses confirmed the absence of strong dominant indicators. The findings highlight the need to improve sensor architecture …

A Pouch Of Trouble For The Pancreas: Unmasking A Case Of Lemmel Syndrome, Aravindharaj Tamilselvan, Sabari Ramesh
Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Lemmel syndrome is a rare cause of biliary and pancreatic obstruction arising from periampullary duodenal diverticula. We report a 72-year-old woman presenting with acute pancreatitis, biliary dilation, and a periampullary diverticulum causing distal CBD compression. Multimodality imaging, including CT and MRCP, established the diagnosis. Although ERCP was advised, the patient declined and improved with conservative management. Early recognition of this uncommon entity is essential to prevent recurrent pancreatobiliary complications.

The gut microbiome has emerged as a key regulator of human health, influencing not only metabolism and immunity but also the development and treatment of cancer. Mounting evidence suggests that microbial dysbiosis contributes to oncogenesis by driving chronic inflammation, producing genotoxic metabolites, altering bile acid metabolism, and disrupting epithelial barrier integrity. At the same time, the gut microbiome significantly modulates the host response to oncotherapies including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and especially immunotherapy, where microbial diversity and specific taxa determine treatment efficacy and toxicity. This review synthesizes current evidence on the role of the gut microbiome in both oncogenesis and oncotherapies, focusing …

International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Objectives: This in vitro study compared the solubility of three root canal sealers, AH Plus (epoxy resin-based), MTA Fillapex (MTA-based), and Cerafill RCS (bioceramic), in two solvents: Xylene and Endosolv.
Methods: Sixty standardized cylindrical specimens were prepared using the three sealers of interest. The specimens were divided into six groups (n = 10) and immersed in either Xylene or Endosolv for 10 minutes. Solubility was assessed by calculating the percentage weight loss before and after immersion. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test (α= 0.05).
Results: All sealers exhibited statistically significant solubility in both solvents (p …

Three-Dimensional Evaluation Of Torque Expression In Maxillary Incisors: Influence Of Crown Shape And Collum Angle, Isha Singh, Achint Juneja, Divya Shetty, Monis Raza, Payal Sharma, Udit Chaudhary
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Objectives: To evaluate the influence of crown morphology and collum angle of maxillary incisors on torque expression at common bracket-bonding landmarks using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Methods: Twenty CBCT scans of individuals aged 18–27 years were analyzed. For each central and lateral incisor, the height of maximum labial contour (HMC), height of the labial anatomic (LA) point, collum angle (CA), and alpha angle at both HMC (αc) and LA (αLA) were measured. Stone casts confirmed LA points. Independent and paired t-tests assessed inter- and intra-tooth differences (α = 0.05).
Results: The HMC was located 2.6 ± 0.3 mm (centrals) and …

Effect Of Red Wine Immersion On The Flexural Strength Of Glass Ionomer Cement: An In Vitro Study, Niyola Crasta, Upasana Reddy, Jayaprakash Kukkila
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Background: Alcoholic beverages such as red wine are widely consumed for social and cultural reasons. Ethanol and other constituents in red wine might alter the physical properties of dental restorative materials, particularly those exposed in the oral environment. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are commonly used in restorative dentistry for their beneficial properties, but their mechanical strength under exposure to acidic or alcoholic solutions is a concern.
Objectives: To evaluate how exposure to red wine over time affects the flexural strength of glass ionomer cement (Shofu FX Ultra Mini).
Methods: Thirty rectangular specimens of glass ionomer cement (Shofu FX Ultra Mini), …
