Decriminalizing Disease: A Health Justice Approach To Infectious Diseases And Criminal Law, Sean E. Bland
Decriminalizing Disease: A Health Justice Approach To Infectious Diseases And Criminal Law, Sean E. Bland
Arkansas Law Review
Infectious diseases, also called communicable diseases, are largely a public health issue and should not be criminalized. This Article seeks to re-frame the discussion around the legal framework for infectious diseases in a way that moves beyond a punishment mindset and toward a health justice mindset. The focus in this Article is on health justice rather than traditional understandings of public health, defined as the science and practice of improving the health of people and their communities. The Article makes three novel contributions. First, it applies a health justice framework to the critique of infectious disease criminalization. Second, the Article …

Monstrosity And Ecophobia In Frankenstein, Moby Dick, And Dracula, Enas Hassouneh, Raja Al-Khalili
Monstrosity And Ecophobia In Frankenstein, Moby Dick, And Dracula, Enas Hassouneh, Raja Al-Khalili
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
Since ancient times, images of monsters have appeared in many works and served as embodiments of human fears and sources of ecophobia. Monstrosity evoked contempt, hatred, and ultimately ecophobia, which Estok describes as irrational fear, contempt, or lack of mindfulness toward the natural environment. This paper explores the character of the monster as an embodiment of ecophobia in three Gothic novels: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), Herman Melville’s Moby Dick (1851), and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), by interpreting monstrosity in socio-cultural contexts. The following questions will be addressed: How is monstrosity represented? How do monsters exhibit ecophobia? What role does the …

Enhancing Citizen Capacity Through Optimising Village-Owned Enterprises (Bumdes) Role In Strengthening Community Participation For Sustainable Development, Supandi Supandi, Saliman Saliman
Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan
Sustainable development at the local level necessitates active community participation, bolstered by educational innovation and the optimisation of empowering institutions such as Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes). This research investigates the impact of the Social Studies Outdoor Laboratory and BUMDes on development in the Bokoharjo, Prambanan, Sleman Regency. Specifically, the study examines three key areas: (1) the influence of the Social Studies Outdoor Laboratory on development, (2) the role of BUMDes in facilitating development, and (3) the collaborative effect between the Social Studies Outdoor Laboratory and BUMDes on regional growth. A quantitative approach was employed, sampling nine individuals from Bokoharjo Village from …
Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Of The Wanzhou District: Merging Landslide Susceptibility Modelling (Lsm) With Insar-Derived Ground Deformation Map, Chao Zhou, Lulu Gan, Ying Cao, Yue Wang, Samuele Segoni, Xuguo Shi, Mahdi Motagh, Ramesh P. Singh
Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Of The Wanzhou District: Merging Landslide Susceptibility Modelling (Lsm) With Insar-Derived Ground Deformation Map, Chao Zhou, Lulu Gan, Ying Cao, Yue Wang, Samuele Segoni, Xuguo Shi, Mahdi Motagh, Ramesh P. Singh
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The prevalent catalog-based Landslide Susceptibility Modelling (LSM) operates under the assumption that future landslide occurrences mirror past and current patterns. Due to growing urban expansion and climate change, certain landslides follow new patterns of occurrence, disrupting the foundational assumption of catalog-based LSM and leading to constraints in the effectiveness of traditional susceptibility maps. Here, to address this problem, we proposed a method to produce more accurate and dynamic landslide susceptibility maps by coupling advanced Ensemble Machine Learning (EML) and Multi-Temporal Interferometric SAR (MT-InSAR). The Wanzhou District in Three Gorges Reservoir area of China is considered as the test site. The …

A Bayesian Network For Business Uncertainties In Coal Mining Industry, Firman Risqul Fidry, Iwan Vanany, Jerry Dwi Trijoyo Purnomo
Journal of Sustainable Mining
In recent years, business uncertainty in the coal mining industry has increased along with increasing global energy demand and carbon emission reduction policies. Not much research has been done on business uncertainty in the coal mining industry based on modelling. This study aimed to develop a model for business uncertainty in the coal mining industry using a Bayesian network approach. The Indonesian coal mining industry was utilized as a case study to develop the proposed model. Two dimensions and nine factors were identified and structured based on a literature review and rigorous interviews with three interviewees from three companies. Each …

Foreign Territorial Sea-Zures: Article I Supports The Application Of The Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act To Drug Trafficking Within Foreign Territorial Seas, Ryan R. Babb
Florida Law Review
Maritime drug trafficking poses a serious threat to the security and societal well-being of the United States. As one of the largest consumers of foreign-cultivated illicit drugs, the United States serves as a lucrative market for international drug trafficking organizations. Exploiting this insatiable demand, drug traffickers often use maritime routes in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico to convey bulk quantities of drugs ultimately bound for the United States. The United States Coast Guard, which is charged with stopping drug traffickers within this six million square mile maritime zone, faces a task akin to …

School Travel Behaviors In Rural Communities: Pandemic-Related Impacts, Kevin Chang, Xinyi Li, Ahmed Abdel-Rahim
School Travel Behaviors In Rural Communities: Pandemic-Related Impacts, Kevin Chang, Xinyi Li, Ahmed Abdel-Rahim
CSET Project Reports
The global pandemic, which started around early 2020, significantly disrupted life for many families, and the trip to and from school was not immune to these disruptions. Parents and children alike made travel adjustments depending on their preferences with regard to personal health and safety, social distancing, and aversion to risk. Each school district and individual school also made decisions with regard to in-person or remote learning during this period of uncertainty. In this study, the research team examines how the pandemic affected school transportation for hundreds of families across the Pacific Northwest. An online survey was developed and administered …
Rural, Gifted Student Experience In Appalachian Kentucky, Olivia G. Jarrell
Rural, Gifted Student Experience In Appalachian Kentucky, Olivia G. Jarrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Current literature shows that gifted students' experiences often differ from nongifted peers. Similarly, research shows that rural students’ experiences are unique compared to nonrural peers. This study hopes to address the gap in literature on experiences of students at the intersection of giftedness and rurality with the question: How do rural, gifted students in Appalachian Kentucky experience and perceive K-12 schooling? Rural, gifted students exist in the overlap between two unique groups. Using a multi-case study, participants came from three separate school districts in a region of Appalachian Kentucky, with each district being a separate case. Data collection included observations …

Climate Change: Impact On Coastal Habitation By Doeke Eisma (Ed.), C. Nicholas Raphael
The Geographical Bulletin
The coast is the meeting place of continents and oceans and a zone of interest and concern to a diverse group of social and physical scientist. The notion thatthe earth's climate is changing due to the release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide is widespread. Increase of fossil fuel consumption is anticipated to result in higher temperatures, weather alterations, dramatic changes in the present-day global agricultural zones, and higher eustatic sea levels due to melting glacial ice.

Population-Environment Dynamics. Ideas And Observations. (4th Edition) By Gay Ld. Ness, William D. Drake, Steven R. Brechin, Editors., Wendy Shaw
The Geographical Bulletin
Population and the environment are intertwined in a complex web that demands the analysis of numerous theoretical and practical issues. These issues have been neglected in the past, and the topics of population and the environment artificially separated in both thought and action. This book attempts to fill these voids using an inductive and interdisciplinary approach. A series of authors contribute fifteen chapters organized into five sections. Section I explores global per - spectives relating to population and the environment, Section II analyzes the im - portance of the state as an actor, Section III focuses on population-environment dynamics in …
Transformation Of Japan's Rural Landscape And Economy: The Case Of A Rice Growing Village In Central Japan, Akira Tabayashi
Transformation Of Japan's Rural Landscape And Economy: The Case Of A Rice Growing Village In Central Japan, Akira Tabayashi
The Geographical Bulletin
Rural regions and communities in Japan have changed drastically following the rapid economic development that occurred in the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. Important outcomes of rural changes were the rapid outflow of labor from rural areas and the increase in the number of part-time farmers. This paper mainly focuses its attention on the evolutionary processes of rural regions over three decades from 1960 to the present, through a case study of a typical Japanese village named Urayamashin. The traditional rice growing village transformed itself into a non-farming village in the early 1970s partly because of a reduction …
Rediscovering The Roots Of Moroccan Geography In An Era Of Interdependence, Donald J. Zeigler, Driss Fassi
Rediscovering The Roots Of Moroccan Geography In An Era Of Interdependence, Donald J. Zeigler, Driss Fassi
The Geographical Bulletin
The indigenous traditions of Moroccan geography, pioneered by such figures as AI Idrisi and Ibn Khaldun during the classical period of Arab intellectual history (1000-1400), came to be ignored and then replaced with the establishment of a French protectorate in 1912. The era of independence in Moroccan geography was supplanted by an era of dependence on European scholarship, which emphasized resource exploitation and which was to last until political independence in 1956. Following that watershed year, intellectual inquiry became more independent and focused on the development needs of the nation. Following a period of Moroccanization in the 1970s, which included …
The Electoral Geography Of Oregon's Ballot Measure 16: The Death With Dignity Act, Kathleen O'Reilly
The Electoral Geography Of Oregon's Ballot Measure 16: The Death With Dignity Act, Kathleen O'Reilly
The Geographical Bulletin
On November 8, 1994 Oregon became the first state in the nation to pass legislation allowing terminally ill patients to end their own lives with the assistance of a physician. Ballot Measure 16, the Death with Dignity Act, removes criminal penalties for assisting a terminally ill suicide, but does not allow lethal injection. In August 1995, U.S. District Judge Michael Hogan ruled the Death with Dignity Act violates the equal protection clause ofthe 14th Amendment. The ruling is being appealed. This paper investigates electoral voting patterns regarding Measure 16 in the 36 Oregon counties. It explores the relationships between votes …
Hydrogeomorphic Response Of A Coastal Plain Stream To Tributary Channelization, Elizabeth J. Nabb, David Shankman
Hydrogeomorphic Response Of A Coastal Plain Stream To Tributary Channelization, Elizabeth J. Nabb, David Shankman
The Geographical Bulletin
The Hatchie River in western Tennessee is one of the few remaining free-flowing streams in the Gulf Coastal Plain. Although there have been no major modifications of the main channel, many of its tributaries have been channelized during the past few decades. Channelization has significantly reduced flooding in the upper sections of the watershed. The straightened and hydrologically more efficient channels, however, speed the flow of water that scours the channel bed. Sediment derived from these unstable channels is transported downstream and into the main channel. An examination of changes in bed elevation indicate that the depth and therefore cross-sectional …
Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: The Human Factor In Recent Climate Change Remains Unproven, Carl F. Ojala
Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: The Human Factor In Recent Climate Change Remains Unproven, Carl F. Ojala
The Geographical Bulletin
Global warming, the theory and controversy involving artificial enhancement of the greenhouse effect of the atmosphere, has emerged as one of the prime environmental issues of recent years. Proponents conclude it may produce serious worldwide problems in the near future, such as rising sea levels, geographic shifts in farming and forest regions, and changes in agricultural yields, water resources, and wetlands. Conversely, skeptics imply that any warming due to proposed increases in greenhouse gases is undetectable and unpredictable among the natural variations in long-term atmospheric temperatures.

Suburbanization As A Post-Industrial Essentiality: Revisiting Sweden's Miljonprogrammet, Colin Wood
Suburbanization As A Post-Industrial Essentiality: Revisiting Sweden's Miljonprogrammet, Colin Wood
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
Definitively speaking, suburbanization does not equate to post-industrialism in the same limelight as would urbanization and industrialism. However, anomalous cases, such as the one being discussed in this paper, tangentially interlink on a socioeconomic basis. In 1965, Sweden began construction of the Miljonprogrammet (Million Programme), where over the next ten years, over one million domiciles were built in a suburban setting leading to a mass diaspora of ‘slum living’ Swedish industrial workers. The nation’s renowned welfare state, built on a collaborative system between public and private sectors as well as federal and municipal actors, overlooked housing in its social …
Was Spinoza A Deleuzian? Rethinking The Politics Of Emotions And Affects, Ahmet Aktas
Was Spinoza A Deleuzian? Rethinking The Politics Of Emotions And Affects, Ahmet Aktas
Department of Philosophy Student Publications
A salient tradition in contemporary affect theory heavily relies on distinguishing between emotions and affects. The former refers to structured categories of socially coded affective states, while the latter denotes the pre-social libidinal flow underlying emotions. This distinction is commonly attributed to Spinoza and is thought to have been further developed by Deleuze. In this article, I argue that this overall historical picture is misleading and inaccurate. Deleuze radically transforms Spinoza’s theory of affect for the ends of his own ethical-political philosophy. Moreover, I argue that Deleuzian and similar conceptualizations of affect fail to fulfill their political and ethical promises …

Data Literacy In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Morgan V. Harrell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutical phenomenological study is to explore the essential data and digital literacies for instructors in community colleges, trade schools, and vocational training programs located in the South to work with artificial intelligence (AI) effectively. The theory guiding this study is based on Max van Manen's framework on lived experiences and Paul Ricoeur's narrative theory, which is designed to enhance understanding of the perception and implementation of these literacies within an AI-augmented educational domain. As society's reliance on data continues to grow, it becomes essential to equip all citizens with the skills required for data literacy (Wolff …
