Pd Chlorin-Based Molecμlar Imaging Probes For Breast Cancer, Yoonjung Cho
Theses
Breast cancer (BrCa) is the second most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S. This highlights the necessity of developing effective therapeutic agents to aid in the treatment of BrCa. A promising new method of treatment is photodynamic therapy (PDT), a clinically approved therapeutic procedure that uses a porphyrin-based photosensitizer (PS) dye to kill cancer cells upon excitation with a light source. It has been observed that chelation of a metal ion into the porphyrin increases the therapeutic efficacy. We have developed a synthetic route incorporating the palladized analogue of the PS …

Tailoring Hiv/Aids Communication To The Cultural Contexts Of The Borana Pastoral Community In Ethiopia, Dano Olana, Sabihah Moola
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The HIV/AIDS health communication approach in sub-Saharan Africa has often overlooked sociocultural specificities. The current approach follows a generalist notion that does not consider the specific contextual domains accordingly. Similarly, the cultural appropriateness of HIV/AIDS health communication among the Borana pastoral community in Ethiopia is not clear. In this study, we aimed to explore whether HIV/AIDS communication among the Borana pastoral community was tailored to the cultural contexts of the community. A qualitative case study was used to unpack the cultural communication contexts for HIV/AIDS. We collected data using three methods, namely, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis …

The reaction between triethylorthoformate and p-chlorophenyl resulted in formation of N,N'-bis-(p-chlorophenyl)formamidine ligand. Subsequently, this ligand interacted with the following metal ions (Co+2, Ni+2, Cu+2, Cr+3 and Ru+3) creating air-stable complexes with formula [M(L)2(H2O)n(Cl)x](X= 0, 1) with distinct octahedral morphologies. The formation of these compounds was identified using mass spectroscopy (MS), which validated the acquired geometries. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis demonstrated how the formamidine group formed and how it coordinated with the metal ions. Studies using pyrolysis (Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) …

Pediatric high-grade gliomas (pHGGs), particularly diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs), are among the most lethal brain tumors due to poor survival and resistance to therapies. DMGs possess a distinct genetic profile, primarily driven by hallmark mutations such as H3K27M, ACVR1, and PDGFRA mutations/amplifications and TP53 inactivation, all of which contribute to tumor biology and therapeutic resistance. Developing physiologically relevant preclinical models that replicate both tumor biology and the tumor microenvironment (TME) is critical for advancing effective treatments. This review highlights recent progress in in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models, including patient-derived brain organoids, genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs), and …

Individuals living with rare diseases often undergo a frustrating and expensive diagnostic odyssey. Clinical geneticists who analyze exome or genome sequencing data from rare disease patients often encounter a list of variants of uncertain significance (VUS) in known disease-causing genes or rare variants in genes of uncertain significance (GUS) that are difficult to interpret, even with the integration of the latest bioinformatic tools. In this Perspective, we review how studies using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster have facilitated rare disease diagnosis by uncovering the clinical relevance of GUS and classifying rare variants into specific allelic categories (loss-of-function or gain-of-function, Muller's …

Synthesis And Biological Study Of Schiff–Mannich Base Derived From 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole As Chelated Tridentate Ligand With Some Transition Metal Ions Complexes, Thuraya Q. Sabah, Shaymaa R. Baqer
Baghdad Science Journal
To prepare a new ligand, many compounds were used to synthesize Schiff-Mannich base, such as isatin, Para chloro Aniline, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and indole. The resulting compound 1-((2-((1H-indol-1-ylthio)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-3-(4-chlorophenylimino)indolin-2-one (L). (L) was used to create a series of metal ion complexes with Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II), Pd (II), Pt (IV), and Au (III). C.H.N.S., FTIR, mass spectra UV-ViS, 1H-NMR, 13CNMR, magnetic moment, and molar conductivity were used to characterize all of these compounds. Except for the palladium(II) and gold(III) complexes, all of the produced complexes had an octahedral geometry, according to the data. The antibacterial activity of the produced compounds was …

Virtual Dignitary Torts, Zahra Takhshid
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The emergence of the metaverse and spatial computing, which has enabled immersive digital interactions, raise complex legal questions. This work examines the feasibility of addressing dignitary torts-such as battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress-committed via avatars. The particular challenge for tort law is the nonphysical nature of selfrepresentations in these virtual spaces. Drawing from the historical evolutions of several dignitary torts, such as the law of battery and emotional harm, this article argues that the key in allowing for the recognition of such harms is appreciating the expansion of the protection of physical body within these torts, to the …
Mechanistic Insights Into The Flash Effect: The Role Of Oxygen And Radiation Chemistry In Ultra-High Dose Rate Radiation Therapy, Jacob Pierce Sunnerberg
Mechanistic Insights Into The Flash Effect: The Role Of Oxygen And Radiation Chemistry In Ultra-High Dose Rate Radiation Therapy, Jacob Pierce Sunnerberg
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The development of new cancer therapies focuses on widening the therapeutic ratio between tumor control and normal tissue toxicity. Over the last decade, ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) radiation therapy, commonly known as FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT), has shown promising potential to reduce normal tissue toxicity while maintaining tumor control. However, the underlying mechanisms of the FLASH effect remain poorly understood. This thesis explores the radiation-chemical basis of FLASH-RT, focusing on the role of oxygen and reactive oxygen species in modulating biological outcomes.
A comprehensive set of in vitro studies demonstrated that UHDR delivery significantly alters radiation chemistry compared to conventional dose …
