Let The Light Shine: Reclaiming Public Space Through Digital Projection, Katherine D. Lind
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Amid the racial uprisings of 2017 and 2020, digital projections emerged as a mode of protest contributing to the calls for removal of Confederate monuments. These digital projections, I argue, created a dialogue between the contested Confederate monuments (the past) and their contemporary surroundings (the present). By examining the digital projections that were cast upon the Albert Pike Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Robert E. Lee Monument in Richmond, Virginia, I demonstrate how they employed a palimpsest to facilitate discourse concerning public memorialization practices and to re-contextualize and reclaim contested sites into spaces for community engagement.

Assessment Of Amikacin In Treatment Of Calf Diarrhea :Field Study, Enas M. Mohamed, Eman S. El-Ashry, Reham A. El-Shafei, Mohamed G. El-Sayed
Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal
Background Neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) is one of the most prevalent diseases affecting young calves, leading to substantial economic loss and elevated mortality rates. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of amikacin in treating calf diarrhea by analyzing hematological profiles, as well as kidney and liver function indicators. Methods Twenty Holstein calves were randomly allocated to two equal groups (n=10 each). Group 1 served as the untreated control group, while Group 2 consisted of calves exhibiting clinical symptoms of diarrhea, which were administered amikacin intramuscularly at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight for three successive days. Results …
Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis
Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis
Faculty Works
The obvious role of capital in generating poverty, war, and environmental breakdown has not led to a parallel recognition of how deeply it shapes the ideology and practice of healthcare. Progressives view access to healthcare as a matter of “right,” but with rare exceptions they do not focus attention on the wider determinants of health policy – from the life-conditions that shape public health to the prevalence, in capitalist countries, of market-inspired remedies. Looking at the US experience and noting how capitalist priorities have permeated official policies toward Covid-19, this essay discusses how medical objections to these policies have been …
Investigating Health Events In Dairy Cattle, Samantha Blocker
Investigating Health Events In Dairy Cattle, Samantha Blocker
Capstone Projects
This research focuses on identifying the key predictors of mastitis and ketosis in dairy cattle, two common and costly diseases affecting milk production and animal health. The primary objective was to identify significant risk factors and evaluate the predictive performance of modeling approaches.
To analyze these complex relationships, a longitudinal dataset following a large sample of dairy cattle is studying using several advanced methods. Survival analysis techniques, like Kaplan-Meier estimations, help measure how long cows remain free from health issues. The Cox Proportional Hazards (CPH) model complements this approach by identifying risk factors associated with health-related events over time. These …

On Certainty And Doubt: Islam And The Speculative Turn In Film And Media Historiography, Pardis Dabashi
Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship
Through an examination of the Muslim call to prayer opening Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust (1991), this article examines epistemological questions concerning certainty and doubt generated by the speculative turn in Black feminist film and media historiography. Because of the deferred structure of Qur’ānic revelation, as well as the tradition of reporting and transcribing the sayings and doings of the Prophet Muhammad, Islam has a vantage on the notion of testimony that is helpful in understanding the kinds of faith necessitated by the imaginative reconstructions integral to Black feminist film history and the modes of critical utterance animating Black …

Biological soil crust communities (biocrusts) establishing on gypsum soils have been well-documented for their prolific appearance and rich diversity of lichens and bryophytes. However, studies characterizing gypsum biocrusts have occurred primarily outside of the U.S., most of which lack comparisons to other soil types. We conducted intensive field surveys to evaluate the ground cover and frequency of biocrust functional groups and moss species on gypsum and non-gypsum soils in the U.S. regions with the most extensive gypsum outcrops, the northern Chihuahuan and eastern Mojave Deserts. Study sites were stratified by geomorphology and paired, so that every gypsum site was matched …
Evaluation Of Disulfiram And Derivatives As Antimicrobial Adjuvants, Surya Bhaskar Karuturi
Evaluation Of Disulfiram And Derivatives As Antimicrobial Adjuvants, Surya Bhaskar Karuturi
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Disulfiram (Antabuse) is an oral drug used for the treatment of alcohol dependence. Previous studies showed that disulfiram has antibiotic activity on multidrug-resistant bacteria. Here disulfiram was further evaluated for its ability to increase the potency of existing antimicrobials against the bacteria and yeast by acting as a drug adjuvant. Microbial cultures were treated with antibiotic or antifungal drugs in combination with disulfiram and its derivatives to determine whether potency is increased. The structure activity relationship (SAR) of disulfiram analogs was assessed against a triazole resistant Aspergillus panel. It showed that the shorter chained analogs of disulfiram are more potent …
Determining Localization Of Surf-4 In Drosophila Melanogaster In The Secretory Pathway, Jada Scott
Determining Localization Of Surf-4 In Drosophila Melanogaster In The Secretory Pathway, Jada Scott
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The purpose of this research is to determine the role of the Surfeit-4 gene, or Surf-4 locus protein, during Drosophila melanogaster development. Surf-4 was identified in the Srivastava lab in a biochemical screen for proteins that associate with the basement membrane (BM): a structure needed and required for normal development and its degradation is a hallmark of tumor metastasis. Surf-4 has been predicted to function within intracellular compartments and is known to be expressed in many parts of the developing fly. We are currently determining why Surf-4 is important in development and what role, if any, it could play during …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025
As the natural world faces unprecedented threats, conservation efforts depend not only on research and policy but also on public awareness and engagement. This project partnered with the Zoo Miami Foundation to promote awareness through social media initiatives and interactive educational events at the University of Central Florida.
The authors began by studying Zoo Miami’s ongoing conservation projects and the specific environmental pressures faced by endangered species and habitats. To align with Zoo Miami’s exceptional standard of credibility, the team conducted in-depth research that extended beyond the foundation’s website to create material that served to both inform the general public …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025
Marine pollution is one of the most urgent environmental crises of our time, threatening the health of our oceans, the survival of marine life, and the well-being of human societies that rely on them. Our educational presentation introduced 3rd-grade students to the issue of marine pollution through creative, hands-on learning. Students built recycled fish crafts using everyday materials, played an interactive cleanup game that demonstrated the importance of removing trash and rescuing marine animals tangled in fishing lines, and helped design a classroom mural to serve as a lasting reminder of their efforts. This service-learning project not only helped us …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025
The presence and health of Florida’s coastal birds rely heavily on the integrity of oyster reefs, which house their crawling and swimming prey items. During this project, we observed bird behaviors across oyster reefs in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) via camera trap footage. The IRL is an important coastal ecosystem that preserves numerous bird species. A previous study in the IRL suggested that live oyster reefs have birds exhibiting more foraging behaviors than on dead reefs, suggesting a need to maintain connected reefs. Our work supports the research of Ph.D. candidate Tara Blanchard, whose work will inform decision-making for …
