Gallium Β-Cyclodextrin Nanoparticles Containing Both Gallium Protoporphyrin And Gallium Nitrate Exhibit Antimicrobial Activity Against Nontuberculous Mycobacteria In Vitro And In Vivo, Seoung-Ryoung Choi, Bradley E. Britigan, Prabagaran Narayanasamy
Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med
Effective and safe antibiotics active against pathogenic mycobacterial species are needed. Iron is an essential element for bacterial survival. Ga(NO3)3 (GN) and Ga protoporphyrin (GP) as iron mimetics have each been shown to inhibit the iron metabolism and growth of various mycobacterial species. In this study, the dual cyclodextrin nanoparticle (CDGPGN) is prepared that carries GP and GN using a sonication homogenization technique to increase the efficacy of the combination therapy. CDGPGN shows a long-acting antimicrobial activity against Mycobacteroides abscessus residing in monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM). A murine pulmonary study showed that the CDGPGN also inhibited the growth …
Sylvan Rhetoric In The Planes Of Plato’S Phaedrus, Madison Jones
Sylvan Rhetoric In The Planes Of Plato’S Phaedrus, Madison Jones
Professional and Public Writing Faculty Publications
Over the past few decades, Plato’s Phaedrus has become an important text for scholars interested in tracing new materialist approaches to the history of rhetoric and writing. Drawing on rhetoric and plant studies scholarship, this essay contributes to this conversation by arguing that trees disclose an important layer of irony in the dialogue, producing a deep, if not ambivalent, unity that brings together rhetoric, writing, and discourse. Through a study of trees in the dialogue, this essay demonstrates how the Phaedrus offers rich connections between spatial, nonhuman, and ecological dimensions of writing, rhetoric, and discourse.

Kentucky’s renewable energy landscape beats with a distinct rhythm shaped by ever-changing variations in sunlight, wind, rainfall, and the ever-modernizing grid that connects them. This paper analyzes minute-by-minute performance data from seven renewable and storage assets owned and operated by the PPL Corporation in Kentucky, including hydroelectric, solar, wind, and lithium-ion battery systems. Using a full year of synchronized, high-resolution data from multiple sites in the Commonwealth, the study examines daily and seasonal capacity factor trends, explores correlations among generation types, and evaluates their alignment with utility load profiles. Our analysis found 279 hours—about 3.2% of the year—with zero renewable …

01. Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery (Novel - Ebook), Matthew Lipman
Middle School Curriculum
One day Harry finds himself giving the wrong answer in science class and begins to wonder where he has gone wrong. This reflection soon involves his classmates, who begin to think together about the nature of thinking, inquiry and knowledge. With the help of their teacher, Harry and his classmates discover rules of formal and informal logic, relational logic and hypothetical thinking—-not as ends in themselves, but as tools in helping them understand themselves and their world. Some of the ideas they begin to explore this way include education, mind, rights, religion, art, cause and effect, causes and reasons, and …

Diversity And Risk Assessment Of Phytophthora Spp. Found On Plant Roots Innative Plant Nurseries And Interstate Shipping Nurseries In California, Rebecca Harkness, Karen Suslow, Supriya Sharma, Monique Sakalidis, Timothy Miles, Wolfgang Schweigkofler
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship
For many nurseries, it is difficult to diagnose Phytophthora-infected plants in time to prevent disease incursion and spread, especially if the infection occurs on roots and causes no or limited symptoms on aerial plant parts. Rapid, accurate, and specific diagnostic methods can facilitate the identification and removal of infected plants. This study was conducted to investigate whether specific nursery types within California are more likely to have different Phytophthora species and which hosts are more likely to test positive for a Phytophthora species using immunological and molecular diagnostic tools. From fall 2016 to spring 2019, we collected 1,180 root samples …

How To Deal With High-Impact Low-Probability Events: Theoretical Explanation Of The Empirically Successful Fuzzy-Like Technique, Juan Ulloa, Aaron Velasco, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
How To Deal With High-Impact Low-Probability Events: Theoretical Explanation Of The Empirically Successful Fuzzy-Like Technique, Juan Ulloa, Aaron Velasco, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
When making decisions, it is important to take into account high-impact low-probability events. For such events, traditional probability-based approach -- which considers the product of the probability p that this event happens and the probability P that a randomly selected building will be destroyed -- often underestimates risks. Available data has lead to an empirical table that provides a more adequate risk estimate. Most of the entries in this table correspond to the fuzzy-like formula min(p,P). This paper explains this empirical result. Specifically, it explains both the effectiveness of the min formula -- and also explains deviations from this formula.
Building A New World In The Shell Of The Old: Co-Designing Post-Capitalist Visions, Alix Gerber
Building A New World In The Shell Of The Old: Co-Designing Post-Capitalist Visions, Alix Gerber
Design Thinking Initiative Staff Publications
Designers working towards social change have often focused on designing discrete solutions to social problems, rather than working within the long-term world-making practices of movements. This paper examines the potential of a more embedded design practice within prefigurative movements, where mutual aid networks, worker cooperatives, and other solidarity economy initiatives are already developing alternative systems in the present. What if we could design everyday tools with these collectives to embody their transformative visions? Yet it can be difficult to design for transformation collaboratively. Collectives include members with diverse visions that can conflict, as well as different ideas about how to …

The Heavenly Lamb, Sacrifices On The Heavenly Altar, And The Song Of The Lamb, Meir Bar-Iian
The Heavenly Lamb, Sacrifices On The Heavenly Altar, And The Song Of The Lamb, Meir Bar-Iian
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The symbolic image of the Lamb of God is well-known in the New Testament and The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs. This image derives from the Old Testament, later adopted by early Christians. Words of Gad the Seer is an apocalyptic pseudepigraphal book written in pseudo-biblical Hebrew from a manuscript copied in the eighteenth century. After over thirty-three years of investigation, many aspects of this recently discovered text are coming to light. There are more than twenty similarities between this largely unknown book and the book of Revelation, though one was written by a Jewish man who became Christian …
“Get Thou Up Into The Temple”: Receiving Revelation And Becoming Holy In The House Of The Lord, Matthew L. Bowen
“Get Thou Up Into The Temple”: Receiving Revelation And Becoming Holy In The House Of The Lord, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Psalms 15:1–5, 24:2–3, and 48:1 [MT 2], as temple hymns of the Jerusalem Temple, are consistent with other texts such as Isaiah 2:2–3 and Genesis 22:14, which envision the holy temple as the “mountain of the Lord” into which one must ritually ascend. The examples of Moses, Nephi, Jacob, and others who ascended into this “mountain” demonstrate that this ascent facilitates the reception of divine revelation necessary in our mortal journey to become holy through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. This sacred ascent is necessary for our eventual, individual, and collective “perfection” in Christ, and it is one that he …

A Deep Dive On War, Craig L. Foster
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Morgan Deane’s To Stop a Slaughter: Just War and the Book of Mormon defines and discusses the concepts of war in the Book of Mormon and places “just war” within a larger context. The various aspects of just war and its impact are compared to the teachings and writings of scholars and philosophers from the early Church Fathers to Chinese military strategists. This interesting and informative book helps Latter-day Saints understand when war is necessary and justified.

The “Allegory” Of Ruth As A Prophecy Of Latter-Day Gathering, Jan Francisco
The “Allegory” Of Ruth As A Prophecy Of Latter-Day Gathering, Jan Francisco
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
n the historical context of the late fifth century BC, the book of Ruth was a powerful story of hope and redemption for the eventual gathering and restoration of Israel’s covenants. Connecting their golden period of unity under King David to this idyllic tale with a beautiful happy ending may be more than a family story. It could also be read allegorically to prophesy the promised gathering of Israel by the Gentiles in the Latter-days. The key to understanding the symbolic layer of this story lies in deciphering the Hebrew meanings of the characters’ names, with Naomi representing the Israelites, …
“Behold, I Went To Hunt Beasts In The Forest”: An Addendum On Enos, Esau, And The Symbolic Geography Of Seir, Matthew L. Bowen
“Behold, I Went To Hunt Beasts In The Forest”: An Addendum On Enos, Esau, And The Symbolic Geography Of Seir, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Enos’s use of the onomastic wordplay in the Jacob and Esau cycle enables him to meaningfully allude to the symbolic geography of those stories and incorporate it into his New World setting (e.g., allusions to the river Jabbok and Peniel/Penuel, the site of Jacob’s “wrestle” with the divine “man”). A third instance of this type of allusion occurs with Enos’s recollection that he “went to hunt beasts in the forest[s]” (Enos 1:3), which appears to subtly allude to Mount Seir, the forested hill country in the land of Edom inhabited by Esau and his descendants.
A Closer Look At Transliterations In Divine Translations, Spencer Kraus
A Closer Look At Transliterations In Divine Translations, Spencer Kraus
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Book of Mormon contains many words left untranslated by Joseph Smith, such as cureloms, cumoms, senine, and ziff. While some might wonder why these words are left untranslated, a closer examination of the kinds of words that are simply transliterated as well as the frequency at which these phenomena occur provide evidence that Joseph Smith actually had an ancient record that he was translating into English. In this paper, I examine why some words have been transliterated in historical translations of the Bible or other ancient texts and compare these explanations to the Book of …
“Upon Thy Belly Shalt Thou Go”: The Garden Of Eden Serpent Symbology Based On The Concept Of Seraphim, Noel Hudson
“Upon Thy Belly Shalt Thou Go”: The Garden Of Eden Serpent Symbology Based On The Concept Of Seraphim, Noel Hudson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The concept of the serpentine seraphim from biblical iconography is discussed in the context of biblical serpent symbology. The association of the seraphim with Ancient Near Eastern kings, deities, and temples is noted. The concept of the seraphim as members of the Council of God is explored, and the possibility of the seraph as a symbol of Christ is discussed. These concepts are applied to the story of the snake in the Garden of Eden, and the additional explanatory power of the seraph symbol in connection with the snake is explored. Specific serpentine attributes are discussed in the context of …

Bloody Sunday, Bloody Ireland, Bloody Textiles, Catherine Harper Phd
Arts and Design
The fabric of the island of Ireland is marked by the leakage of persistent sores and unhealed wounds borne by the unhealed messy flesh of the national body, which is symbolically swaddled, shrouded, stifled and sheltered by cloth. Ireland is a stained and bloodied cloth, marked irreversibly by conflict and abuse, bloodied by repression and denial, sullied by hunger and history. Blood, flowing from stigmata onto cloth, haemorrhage in extremis from wounds, real or imagined, is steeped deep into the Irish psyche, reflecting a narrative of abjection, sacrifice, memory and mourning.
