The article discusses the impact of the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in the Super Bock case (C-211/22) on the assessment of vertical pricing agreements under EU competition law. The judgment underscores the need to apply an economic approach when assessing whether an agreement, which provides for the setting of fixed or minimum resale prices, constitutes a restriction of competition ‘by object’. In this judgment, the CJEU rejects the previous formalistic approach – present in the practice of the EC and NCAs – which automatically qualified RPMs as anti-competitive, without analyzing its economic and …

The commented case pertains to the exchange of information that took place over many years, by basically all significant credit institutions in Portugal. Unlike other instances of the exchange of information, the latter had a standalone character in this case, as it did not serve or facilitate another, main anticompetitive behavior, which would amount to a concerted practice or agreement. The key to this case was to establish whether a mere exchange of information may amount to unlawfulness. E-cigarette/vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) is strongly associated with vitamin E acetate and often occurs with concomitant tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) use. To uncover pathways associated with EVALI, we examined cytokines, transcriptomic signatures, and lipidomic profiles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from THC-EVALI patients. At a single center, we prospectively enrolled mechanically ventilated patients with EVALI from THC-containing products (N = 4) and patients with non-vaping acute lung injury and airway controls (N = 5). BALF samples were analyzed by Luminex multiplex assay, RNA sequencing, and mass spectrometry. After treating BEAS-2B lung epithelial cells with vaping and non-vaping BALF, LDH release was quantified. …

Soft robots have the potential to solve many problems in areas like robotics surgery, human-robot interaction, unmanned exploration tasks, and food harvesting. However, several aspects of soft robotics are still in development, e.g., efficient designs, actuation methods, modeling, and control. This paper provides some designs of tendon-driven soft robots that can be used for educational and research purposes, boosting the understanding of these systems. The proposed designs focus on five features: low manufacturing costs, accessible fabrication methods, simple assembly processes, an open-source approach, and durability.

The TV application may interface with media content providers to fetch media content for streaming to and viewing on the media player by way of the internet. The media player may be a computing device (e.g., a Smart TV, a tablet computer, a smart phone, a laptop computer, a mobile computing device) connected to a network and interfaced to the internet.

Presented herein are novel techniques for integrating low-rank adaptation (LoRA) adapters in a distributed Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) environment while addressing privacy concerns. By hosting a base model and the adapters on separate GPUs, the techniques provide for balancing computational efficiency with data security. Through the techniques proposed herein, a dynamic system for AI model inference can be provided that separates the base model and the LoRA adapter onto different GPUs or two groups of clustered GPUs connected via a network. In this paper, we adopt a sufficientarian ethics approach to study the concern of consumption inadequacy engendered by climate change in subsistence communities. The sufficientarian approach to consumption ethics dictates that in the face of climate change, priority should be afforded to establishing and maintaining consumption adequacy in low-income settings. We elaborate on the basic principles underlying sufficientarian ethics and compare it to alternative approaches such as utilitarian ethics and prioritarian ethics. Subsequently, we turn our attention toward specifying how poverty and the deleterious impact of climate change combine to render subsistence communities more vulnerable to consumption inadequacies as compared …

In the context of catastrophic climate change, the optimism that underpins our economic models for calculating the future cost of present risks has become both untenable and dangerous. Nonetheless, even writing urgently concerned with these risks continues to invoke a version of the Child as a figure of futurity that appears to naturalize both this optimism and our present inaction. This paper approaches the topic of intergenerational thinking by asking it what it might mean to stretch the conventional periodization of the long eighteenth century across generations. Reading Phillis Wheatley’s heroic couplet poems alongside Earl Wasserman’s mid-twentieth-century work on neoclassical poetics, it explores some of the surprising possibilities unleashed by revisiting the work of earlier critics. This mid-twentieth-century scholarship, the essay suggests, establishes a mode of eighteenth-century poetics that lends itself to more recent understandings of abolition and structural change. Bringing together my identities as an Indigenous woman (Métis Nation of Alberta) and as a scholar specializing in eighteenth-century women writers has involved the continual unlearning of colonial research practices. The following essay reflects on my efforts to work with/in archives in a decolonizing way. I will share some of the practices that I have adopted, not to provide a checklist, but to join the ongoing conversation of many eighteenth-century studies scholars who share a decolonizing desire.

This introduction to a conversation on Intergenerational Thinking that first began at the American Society of Eighteenth Century Studies in Toronto, March 2024, establishes the importance of dialogue across generations in feminist eighteenth-century studies. It synthesizes the methods the participants engage to think with past scholars, rather than disavow such work. While the topics discussed are diverse -- feminist history, Phillis Wheatley, Indigenous eighteenth-century archives, climate catastrophe and Charlotte Charke – the writers share an approach to generational thinking grounded in a critique of the assumption that the new is always better.

Margaret Cavendish (1623-1673) only began receiving sustained attention by historians of philosophy in recent decades, but she is being rapidly integrated into the early modern philosophical canon. This essay explores one dimension of teaching Cavendish that presents difficulties for introductory philosophy students: her criticisms of experimental philosophy. Section one explains how I integrate Cavendish into the narrative of my course, identifying both historical and thematic strategies for including her in introductory philosophy courses. In this piece, I describe a way of thinking about the structure of that piece and how to understand two of its major moments in relationship to standardly taught material. The first moment is the dilemma about how inanimate matter is moved, with its response centered on treating a horse and its rider as a paradigm example of causation. "Jumping Pens" considers "historical and epistemological vertigo" as a useful pedagogical rubric for teaching the works of Margaret Cavendish (1623-73) in contemporary university classrooms. Specifically, it looks back across more than a decade of teaching Cavendish in diverse settings in order to show how exciting this author can be for students who are just starting out in the discipline of literary studies. The visual afterlife of the two frontispieces from the first volume of Eliza Haywood’s periodical, The Female Spectator (1744-46) promotes the argument that middling women should be allowed to learn the same proto-disciplinary topics that men studied by representing how women could include both amusements and informal learning in between their duties as wives and mothers. The theatrical genre known as the proverbe dramatique, which flourished as a pastime of French high society during the late eighteenth century, has often been understood through the written exemplars left by the author and artist Louis Carrogis, known as Carmontelle. Yet Carmontelle’s literary contributions to the genre have obscured the vast range of activities known as jouer des proverbes (playing proverbs)—activities associated especially with women—which included conversational games, pantomime, poetry, dance, and music making.
