Salons were core institutions of the eighteenth-century European social calendar, especially in Paris. Literary performances and philosophical conversation were the core activities of many of these gatherings. What did conversation and literary readings actually sound like at these events? To what extent were voices audible to everyone in the room, or too muffled or far away to be heard? What was the impact of the ambiance or of ephemeral sound on the reading or reception of the hearing? In eighteenth-century Parisian salons, theme and variations on popular melodies proliferated. Elaine Sisman’s seminal study of variation form provides a foundational approach for understanding variations as rhetorical exercises that persuade through differences in syntax and expression. In this vein, scholars have comprehensively affirmed the ways that salon music reflects the dialogic and sociable practices of Enlightenment receptions (Hanning, Sutcliffe, and Zohn). I suggest that theme and variation form is not only connected to the rhetoric of the salon, but that the concept of sequential elaboration is a principle that was also prized in residential architecture.

This paper reflects on my experience simulating an 18th-century French salon for an academic conference and in an undergraduate classroom. I argue that simulating a salon is heuristically as well as pedagogically useful and allows historians to test hypotheses about the nature of the salon and the role of the salonnière proposed by scholars such as Dena Goodman and Antoine Lilti. The essay also engages with some of the important insights gained from feminist and performance theory regarding historical reenactment. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a medically important mosquito-borne orthoflavivirus, but no vaccines are currently available to prevent ZIKV-associated disease. In this study, we compared three recombinant chimeric viruses developed as candidate vaccine prototypes (rJEV/ZIKV^MR-766, rJEV/ZIKV^P6-740, and rJEV/ZIKV^PRVABC-59), in which the two neutralizing antibody-inducing prM and E genes from each of three genetically distinct ZIKV strains were used to replace the corresponding genes of the clinically proven live-attenuated Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine SA₁₄-14-2 (rJEV). This article aims to explore the application of visual grammar in a cross-cultural context. Taking the visual grammar performance of electric car advertisements in different cultural backgrounds as an example, it analyzes how visual elements in these advertisements reflect visual grammar from a cross-cultural perspective, focusing on the principles of cross-cultural business communication. Based on the visual grammar theory of Kress and van Leeuwen, this study selected electric vehicle advertising samples from China and the United States and analyzed them using content analysis. This study explores how NGOs achieve sustainability goals as they focus on poverty alleviation through ecological capability building. In-depth semi-structured interviews with nine representatives of NGOs working on poverty alleviation were conducted and subjected to thematic analysis within a critical realist perspective. Findings show that the NGOs engage their communities in all the different stages of their programs, creating a sense of empowerment that becomes the foundation for their ecological meta-capability, a holistic approach to the development of human capability that considers social, economic, and environmental aspects. The controversy surrounding executive compensation has received attention in the popular press and academic literature. We explore executive compensation through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching (CST), outline the basic principles of CST and compare and contrast them with corporate social responsibility (CSR), and identify human dignity, in contrast to profit maximization, to be the differentiator between the two. Next, we use CST to develop a model for measuring excessive executive compensation. Background/Objectives: With the rise in prevalence of diagnostic genetic techniques like RNA sequencing and whole exome sequencing (WES), as well as biological treatment regiments for cancer therapy, several genes have been implicated in carcinogenesis. This review aims to update our understanding of the Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) gene and its role in the pathogenesis of various cancers. Methods: A comprehensive search of five online databases yielded 43 studies that highlighted the effect of sporadic NF2 mutations on several cancers, including sporadic meningioma, ependymoma, schwannoma, mesothelioma, breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, prostate cancer, glioblastoma, thyroid cancer, and melanoma. The p53 tumor suppressor is commonly mutated in cancer; however, there are no effective treatments targeting p53 mutants. A DNA vaccine gWIZ-S237G targeting the p53 S237G mutant, which is highly expressed in A20 murine tumor cells, was developed and administered intramuscularly via electroporation, either alone or in combination with PD1 blockade. The anti-p53-S237G immunization elicited a robust protective response against subcutaneous A20 tumors and facilitated the infiltration of immune cells including CD8+ T cells, NK cells, and DCs. The vaccine enhanced the induction and maturation of CD11c+, CD103+CD11c+, and CD8+CD11c+ cells, which in turn promoted tumor-specific antibody production, as well …

Chiropterophagy is a widespread phenomenon, but only one case of bat consumption by sable has been documented in the Russian Far East. This study presents the first recorded instance of chiropterophagy by the Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica) in the southern Russian Far East, based on excrement collected from the Solyanik Cave in the southern Sikhote-Alin Mountains in 2007. The excrement included bones from three bat species (Murina hilgendorfi, Myotis bombinus, Plecotus ognevi) and one vole species (Myodes rutilus). In this article, the processes of metal complex synthesis are studied in detail. Zinc OEDF+NTF complexation reactions were carried out in the presence of polyhydric alcohols, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and citric acid. For the first time, the synergistic efficiency of a mixture of zinc OEDF+NTF complexes with methyldiethanolamine, used as an inhibitor of mineral salt accumulation, was studied. It was found that when selecting the components in equivalent amounts, the inhibition efficiency of the composition is at least 90%. The high efficiency of inhibiting mineral salt accumulation in the composition is due to the presence of methyldiethanolamine, alkylimidazoline, and their …

In this paper, we use a feminist dialogue to query publication deaths that haunt us. We ruminate on respective past publications that remain unread and uncited, despite encapsulating defining events in our development as scholars. For Author Kaye Hare this was an affective narrative that troubled a seemingly ideal moment of public scholarship; for Author Amber Moore, this was a hard-fought analysis of precarious intersectional feminist resistance in popular culture.
