Safe Robot Planning Through Understanding Human Behaviors, Haoyi Wang

Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research

This research introduces a novel framework for safe human-robot interaction that combines active human state estimation, conformal trajectory prediction, and Model Predictive Control. The framework enables robots to maintain probabilistic safety guarantees while adapting to human internal states such as attention levels and driving styles. Through simulations of diverse driving scenarios, we developed a reward-based human behavior model. This approach advances human-robot interaction by providing an adaptive method for safe robot planning that explicitly accounts for human behavioral uncertainties.

Reusable Takeout Container Research And Implementation In The City Of Kalamazoo, Alexa Hempel

Honors Theses

In 2018 alone, the United States added 830,000 tons of single use takeout containers to landfills. The City of Kalamazoo’s Community Sustainability Plan calls for a reduction of waste going into landfills, so single use takeout containers were targeted as an item to reduce for implementation of this goal.

Research was conducted on the feasibility and interest of adding reusable takeout container options to downtown Kalamazoo food establishments. This involved a survey of Kalamazoo residents which garnered over 1,100 responses and a survey of downtown food establishments, which displayed interest from both parties. However, even with the strong initial interest, …

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

COVID-19 and related challenges to patient access necessitated the development of new models of care to ensure a healthy patient population. This paper describes the outcomes of a pilot virtual primary care program at a large independent academic health center in Delaware. The preliminary results are encouraging from the perspective of provider and patient satisfaction, as well as the utility of the operational model. A complete cost-benefit analysis was beyond the scope of the paper; thus, future operational research should focus on the metrics of cost and quality as key indicators of model sustainability.

Michigan Tech Publications

Intracranial aneurysms (IA) pose significant health risks and are often challenging to manage. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation has emerged as a powerful tool for understanding lesion-specific hemodynamics in and around IAs, aiding in the clinical management of patients with an IA. However, the current workflow of CFD simulations is time-consuming, complex, and labor-intensive and, thus, does not fit the clinical environment. To address these challenges, we have developed a semi-automated pipeline integrating multiple open-source software packages to streamline the CFD simulation process. Specifically, the study utilized medical angiography data from 18 patients. An in-house open-source DL image segmentation model …

Place Branding: More Than Just A Logo, Marilyn R. Schlake Dec 2024

Place Branding: More Than Just A Logo, Marilyn R. Schlake

Cornhusker Economics

Place branding can distinguish one community from another. In a landscape of locations that provide the same amenities, environments, and opportunities, branding can help a community “stand out.” However, what is usually missing is a place brand developed in association with the community’s history, values, social connections, and organization associations that have evolved.

The Vision Of The Inklings: Mythopoeia And Modern Christian Literature, Emmalene Sotomayor Dec 2024

The Vision Of The Inklings: Mythopoeia And Modern Christian Literature, Emmalene Sotomayor

Senior Honors Theses

The Inklings wrote with the intention to convey truth through myth. C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien and their friends developed stories to point readers to something greater—very often God. Christian creators now can look to their example while writing their own works of art. Currently, Christian fiction is in a sad state, known for mediocre romance novels that hardly portray faith in a moving or truthful manner. Believers can use the wisdom of Tolkien and Lewis to develop their own excellent works. Lewis and Tolkien’s beliefs in myth pointing to God, hope against adversity, and good resisting …

Reconstructing Cosmic Filaments Around Dwarf Galaxies With The Rubin Observatory, Sarah E. Draves, Charlotte Welker, Charlotte Olsen

Publications and Research

The cosmic web is the largest structure in the universe, consisting of streams of gas and dust that connect galaxies made of stars, dark matter, and more gas and dust. Denser areas of the cosmic web tend to have more massive and redder galaxies, which implies a strong connection between cosmic structure and galaxy evolution. The degree to which galaxies are influenced by the cosmic web outside of relatively dense areas, particularly in the case of small filaments near galaxies, is still an area of active study. Low mass galaxies, known as dwarf galaxies, are particularly sensitive to the environment …

Organisms vary widely in their diet breadth, ranging from specialists that feed on few resources to generalists that feed on many. Specialists have honed their ability to catch and process specific prey, but generalists must deal with prey that differ in nutritional quality and defensive mechanisms. Have generalist predators overcome costs associated with consuming multiple prey species or do they experience costly trade-offs when handling different prey? Generalist predators also live in environments that vary in the type and abundance of prey species. How do generalists navigate this variation in prey abundance and profitability and seek out their preferred prey? …
