Recontextualized Knowledge: Available Designs Of The Long-Form Youtube Video Essay, Michelle Lynn Arendt
Dissertations and Theses
Recontextualization - the intricate process of transferring meaning material from one social semiotic context to another - is the primary avenue through which science and social science are communicated to general audiences. The prevailing popularity of social media platforms such as YouTube has encouraged a digital turn in recontextualization research and practice, with considerable emphasis given to navigating web 2.0's unique participation structure. However, compared to professional organizations, which contribute the largest amount of recontextualized scientific or social scientific content to social media platforms, independent user-generated creators consistently produce more successful content. Of interest to this project is the YouTube …
Perceptions Of Safety At School: Associations With Bullying Participant Roles And Gender, Nicholas G. Tanasa, Michelle Demaray
Perceptions Of Safety At School: Associations With Bullying Participant Roles And Gender, Nicholas G. Tanasa, Michelle Demaray
Honors Capstones
Bullying is a serious issue in schools worldwide that plays a vital role in students’ mental health and perception of safety at school (Man et al., 2022). The current study explored how a student’s involvement in various bullying participant roles (Bully, Assistant, Victim, Defender, and Outsider) is associated with a student’s perception of safety at school. This study additionally explored if these associations varied by gender. It was hypothesized that bullying and assisting scores would be positively associated with feeling safe at school; victimization scores would be negatively associated with feeling safe at school; no predictions were made for defending …
Russia’S Undermining Of International Arbitration: A Pattern Of Subversion, Joseph E. Samuels
Russia’S Undermining Of International Arbitration: A Pattern Of Subversion, Joseph E. Samuels
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog
Over the last few years, Russia has engaged in undermining the international arbitration system. This pattern culminated in a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation on July 26, 2024, effectively restricting the enforcement of international arbitration awards against Russian parties when rendered by arbitrators from “unfriendly” states. The path to this decision began with Russia’s 2020 amendments to its Arbitrazh (Commercial) Procedure Code. The addition of Article 248 allows the courts to assume jurisdiction over disputes covered by an arbitration agreement,[3] where the agreement becomes unenforceable due to “obstacles in access to justice”.

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications
Background/Objectives: Non-heme iron is essential for critical neuronal functions such as ATP generation, synaptogenesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, and myelin formation. However, as non-heme iron accumulates with age, excessive levels can contribute to oxidative stress, potentially disrupting neuronal integrity and contributing to cognitive decline. Despite growing evidence linking high brain iron with poorer cognitive performance, there are currently no proven methods to reduce brain iron accumulation in aging or to protect cognitive function from iron’s negative effects. Recent studies suggest that nutrition may influence brain iron levels, though the evidence remains limited and mixed. Methods: In this review, we explore recent findings, …
The Implementation Of Ketamine-Assisted-Psychotherapy On Healthcare Workers Suffering From Workplace-Related Ptsd Due To Covid-19, Ziluolan Zou
Nursing | Student Research Posters
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, healthcare workers were exposed to a deadly disease with limited knowledge and personal protective equipment, subjected to long hours, forced to ration care due to limited critical care resources and ventilators, and isolated from their families due to fear of spreading the virus. These factors further compounded the occupational stress associated with being a healthcare worker. The literature shows that the physical, mental, and emotional challenges frontline healthcare workers faced during the COVID-19 pandemic had lasting impacts on their mental health. The prevalence of mental health illnesses, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, among …

Nursing | Student Research Posters
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a medical emergency where the heart unexpectedly stops beating due to an electrical malfunction. A person experiencing a cardiac arrest collapses, loses consciousness, and ceases breathing (American Heart Association, 2022).
Exercise offers numerous benefits to the cardiovascular system and a person’s overall health. However, there are incidents of sports-related cardiac arrest in apparently healthy athletes, including children and young adults. Athletes may be exposed to dehydration, adrenic surges, electrolyte imbalances, acid/base disturbances, and trauma which increases their risk of experiencing a cardiac event (Wasfy et al., 2016).
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of …
Racial Concordance Perceptions Of Post-Op African-American Patients, John-Ezekiel Moya
Racial Concordance Perceptions Of Post-Op African-American Patients, John-Ezekiel Moya
Nursing | Student Research Posters
African-Americans have historically faced significant health disparities, which persist due to implicit racial biases and a lack of cultural competency among non-Black healthcare providers. These disparities often result in poorer health outcomes and diminished patient satisfaction. One potential factor in mitigating these issues is racial concordance, the alignment of racial identity between patients and providers (Jetty et al., 2022). However, only 6.3% of the nursing workforce identifies as Black or African-American (Smiley et al., 2023), limiting opportunities for racially concordant care. While racial concordance may foster trust, communication, and comfort in healthcare settings, research on its importance to African-American Patients—especially …

Post-dispersal male African elephants (Loxodonta africana) live within complex social networks. To quantify the consistency of male elephant character (or personality) within these networks, we employed behavioral repeatability analysis tools across social and environmental contexts. We collected behavioral data from thirty-four individually-identified male elephants at the same waterhole over five field seasons (2007–2011) in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Using repeatability models to assess ten behavioral categories, we found five behaviors (affiliation, aggression, dominance, self-directed anxious, and self-directed comfort) were consistent at the individual level. Some of these behaviors were also repeatable, depending on social context. In particular, the …

Background: Hair loss is a normal experience, but if the amount of hair loss exceeds what is considered normal, it will usually cause anxiety for the patient. In Indonesia, almost every Muslim woman wears a hijab. The hijab is one of many factors believed to cause hair loss. Telogen effluvium (TE) itself is a hair cycle disorder in which the anagen phase terminates prematurely, resulting in diffuse club hair loss without scarring, and TE itself has many risk factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the incidence of TE in women who wear hijabs …

Glutamate Receptors At The Zebrafish Neuromuscular Junction, Trenton Randall
Glutamate Receptors At The Zebrafish Neuromuscular Junction, Trenton Randall
Honors College Theses
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS, but at the neuromuscular junction, that role is taken by acetylcholine. However, during embryonic development, non-cholinergic receptors, including those for glutamate, are also present at the NMJ, which are not maintained unless used. These receptors can still form functional circuits, as evidenced by a process called neurotransmitter respecification, in which a neuron changes which neurotransmitter it releases, and is accompanied by the upregulation of the corresponding receptor by the muscle. This process has been observed in frogs and in rats. We predict that zebrafish also exhibit this neurotransmitter plasticity. To assess …

Infant formula provides a safe, nutritious alternative to breastfeeding but caregivers may use unsanitary methods or make substantial errors with formula dilution and jeopardize infant health.1 Underdiluting formula can result in health problems, such as hypernatremic dehydration, gastroenteritis, other digestive problems, or long-term excess weight gain.2 Overdiluting infant formula, sometimes used to reduce expense by low-income caregivers,2 can also lead to serious health problems for babies, including diarrhea, water intoxication, nutrient deficiencies, malnutrition, and even death.2,3
Previous studies have assessed common measurement inaccuracy of infant formula preparations in relation to bottle characteristics, package instructions, caregiver experience, and target amount, …
Parenting Practices And Attachment Levels In Relation To Externalizing Behaviors In Children Raised By Nonparental Caregivers, Kourtney Mia Barfield
Parenting Practices And Attachment Levels In Relation To Externalizing Behaviors In Children Raised By Nonparental Caregivers, Kourtney Mia Barfield
Honors Theses
Current literature supports parenting practices and the quality of child-caregiver attachments are correlated with child externalizing behavior. However, these results typically come from samples of biological parents and their children. It is unknown if parenting practices (i.e. poor supervision, inconsistent discipline, and positive parenting) predict attachment and externalizing behavior among children of grandparents and foster parents. Previous studies have also found
that attachment mediates the relation between parenting practices and externalizing behavior among children raised by biological parents. This study aims to determine if similar relations will be found among grandchildren and foster children and if the level of attachment …

College Proximity And College Costs: Is It More Expensive To Attend A Far-Away College?, Amanda Cook
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Many scholars have argued that it may be more costly to attend a far-away college than it is to attend a nearby college. If this is true, students who live in areas where colleges are few and far between may face higher costs than those with ample college options. This study assesses the plausibility of this line of reasoning by examining the association between geographic access to higher education, distance traveled to college, and college costs, as indicated by student debt. Using data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, this study finds that people with lower levels of …

Food Insecurity, Psychological Distress, And Discrimination Of Older Black Women In Central Texas, Revonder Ellis-Vanarsdale
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Food insecurity is an ongoing public health concern in the United States. There is limited knowledge within social work practice about the experiences of food insecurity specifically among older Black women. Historically, older Black women have faced discrimination which can also negatively impact their psychological well-being and ability to obtain an adequate food supply. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore perceptions of how psychological distress and discrimination affect Black women ages 60 and older who are food insecure in Central Texas. This study used social ecological model and intersectionality theory to identify perceived factors that affect …

Nonlinear Thomson Scattering In An Intense Tightly Focused Ultrashort Laser Pulse, Yance Sun
Nonlinear Thomson Scattering In An Intense Tightly Focused Ultrashort Laser Pulse, Yance Sun
Theses and Dissertations
We investigate nonlinear Thomson scattering generated by intense laser pulses focused in noble gases. Electrons are ionized from low-density helium or argon early during the laser pulse and scatter light out the side of the focus. We measure fundamental, second, and third harmonic light focus over nearly the entire emission sphere. We investigate the influence of electron bunching, when individual atoms ionize multiple electrons sequentially as the laser field increases early during the laser pulse. Simulations suggest that correlation between electron positions for the ten electrons ionized from argon should distort the spatial pattern of nonlinear Thomson scattering relative to …
