A Frame, A Jar, And A Mural: An Exploratory Crafts-Based Arts Curriculum Infused With Making, Community, And Place, Laura Ann Rowley
Theses and Dissertations
Situated within the current landscape of loneliness and isolation facing today's youth, this research describes a place-based and crafts-based arts curriculum for elementary students in the Salt Lake area. It uses curriculum as an investigative tool to explore the relationships between crafts, place, making, community and belonging. The curriculum itself incorporates place-based activities including hikes, urban walks, and plein air making while looking at the lives and works of local Salt Lake maker-artists Pilar Pobil, Jann Haworth, and Ben Behunin. It also delves into a wide array of craft arts and making including: decorative frame painting, embroidery, quilting, pottery, rubbings, …

Perceptions And Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students On Antibiotic Medications, Emily Boask
Perceptions And Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students On Antibiotic Medications, Emily Boask
Honors Theses
On a global scale, antibiotic resistance is a threat to public health. The causes of antibiotic resistance are multifaceted, including healthcare providers overprescribing antibiotics, antibiotic overuse in farming and food production, and antibiotic misuse or malpractices. The public recognizes antibiotic resistance as a significant problem but there are serious knowledge gaps regarding antibiotic resistance and antibiotic stewardship.
University students are a particularly important subpopulation of the public to understand appropriate antibiotic use because many of these individuals are navigating their health concerns on their own for the first time. Many individuals believe that antibiotics can improve cold symptoms, upper respiratory …

Modern Bodies: Globalizing Media Cultures And The Representation Of Ideal Beauty, Michelle Sun
Modern Bodies: Globalizing Media Cultures And The Representation Of Ideal Beauty, Michelle Sun
Comparative Literature Undergraduate Senior Theses
This project aims to examine how the image of the “modern body” is constructed, imagined, modified, and sustained by globalizing media cultures in France, Japan, and the US—investigating how factors of race, age, health, class, and gender overlap and intersect to create a vision of “ideal” beauty across different times and spaces. Previous research has focused on particular topics, such as the rise of cosmetic surgery in East Asia or the politics of modern American beauty parlors. However, my goal in this project is to evaluate these diverse studies through a broader and more comparative lens, analyzing examples of French …

Lstm-Transformer Based Robust Hybrid Deep Learning Model For Financial Time Series Forecasting, Md R. Kabir
Lstm-Transformer Based Robust Hybrid Deep Learning Model For Financial Time Series Forecasting, Md R. Kabir
Theses and Dissertations
The inherent challenges of financial time series forecasting demand advanced modeling techniques for reliable predictions. Financial data, belonging to the category of multimedia data, contains an extensive quantity of information that is widely used for data analysis and decision-making tasks. Effective financial time series forecasting is crucial for financial risk management and the formulation of investment decisions. Accurate prediction of stock prices is a subject of study in the domains of investing and national policy. This problem appears to be challenging due to the presence of multi-noise, nonlinearity, volatility, and chaotic natures in stocks. This paper proposes a novel financial …

A Comparative Study Of Toxicity Propagation Using Epidemiological Models, Niloofar Yousefi
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the spread and intensity of toxic content on social media, with a particular focus on platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The growing presence of toxic interactions has sparked concerns about their effects on public discourse. Utilizing epidemiological models such as SIR (Susceptible, Infected, Recovered), SIS (Susceptible, Infected, Susceptible), SIRS (Susceptible, Infected, Recovered, Susceptible), SEIRS (Susceptible, Exposed, Infected, Recovered, Susceptible), and the novel SEImIhRS model (Susceptible, Exposed, Moderate Infected, High Infected, Recovered, Susceptible), which are traditionally used to study infectious disease dynamics, this dissertation examines toxicity in platform X discussions. A key contribution of this work is …

Factors Of Police Decision-Making Of Veterans In Crisis, Paul N. Guzman
Factors Of Police Decision-Making Of Veterans In Crisis, Paul N. Guzman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since 9/11, the need for veteran crisis intervention has increased. Police agencies often respond to veterans in crisis by deploying officers who have completed Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, and many of the officers are prior military. However, little research has focused specifically on the factors influencing police officers’ decision-making when responding to veterans in crisis. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the association and predictability between event type, veteran behavior, police officer military experience, police officer CIT, and the disposition of veterans as measured by arrest, referral for mental health services, and the use of force. …

Trashed At Cedar Point: A Waste Management Analysis, Alexander Waltrich
Honors Projects
Cedar Point has a waste problem that can be solved by implementing a more sustainable waste management policy. This project addresses the impacts of waste management policies on the environment, economy, society, and their temporal viability. I propose and analyze three waste management alternatives: Status Quo, Pilot Recycling Program, and Waste Reduction Plan. Through literature evaluation and alternative assessment I recommend that Cedar Point consider implementing a Waste Reduction Plan.
The Relations Between The Financial Wellbeing Of Custodial Grandparents, Their Overall Wellbeing, And Their Perceived Social Support, Paige L. Miller
The Relations Between The Financial Wellbeing Of Custodial Grandparents, Their Overall Wellbeing, And Their Perceived Social Support, Paige L. Miller
Honors Theses
There have been numerous studies on how the financial wellbeing of custodial grandparents affects their overall wellbeing, and how the amount of social support custodial grandparents receive impacts their depressive and anxiety symptoms. However, little is known regarding the ways in which all three variables are related – financial wellbeing, overall wellbeing, and social support – or their impact on custodial grandparents. We examined the relations between these variables, as well as the moderating relation of financial wellbeing on social support and wellbeing. The data used in the current study was collected as part of a larger project, during which …
