Islam Across Cultures: The International Islamic University Of Indonesia Through A Western Lens, Elizabeth Summerfield
Islam Across Cultures: The International Islamic University Of Indonesia Through A Western Lens, Elizabeth Summerfield
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Since the September 11th tragedy in the United States, Islam has become associated with many in the West with unpredictable menace, a significant threat to the civilised order. This article presents a preliminary exploration of a counter narrative to that conception of Islam. Indonesian Islam challenges that common perception, even while it has also been the site of Islamic extremist violence. The big picture of Islam in Indonesia reveals a different story, one where such militancy is aberrant. It is not reflective of deep principles of Islam as it is practised by the vast majority of Indonesian Muslims. To take …

The "Ways Of Peace" And The "Ways Of Pleasantness": Core Values Of Jewish Law, Hershey H. Friedman, Joshua Krausz
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The phrase "the Constitution is not a suicide pact" signifies that during times of crisis, the nation's survival takes precedence over constitutional rights. Similarly, the sages of the Talmud emphasized that "Her [the Torah's] ways are the ways of pleasantness, and all of her paths are peace," underscores that sometimes laws have to be adjusted if they can cause strife and dissension. They used this verse from Proverbs to establish the principles of darchei shalom (the ways of peace) and darchei noam (the ways of pleasantness) to foster a peaceful, harmonious, and pleasant society, often amending biblical laws to maintain …

The Association Of Leadership Styles With Psychosocial Safety Climate: The Case Of Authentic Leadership, Eugene Laloo, Robyn Coman, Natalia K. Hanley
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Psychosocial safety climate (PSC) is an organisation-level construct that measures an organisation’s commitment to the prevention of psychological harm in the workplace and has been identified as a lead indicator for psychological hazards. A key factor in PSC is senior leaders’ involvement through the establishment of policies, procedures, and practices for the prevention of psychological harm in the workplace. While leadership has been identified as an antecedent for a favourable PSC, the impact of different leadership styles on PSC has not been extensively studied.
This article reports a multivariate study of five contemporary leadership styles and their impact on PSC. …

Kitkats And Boiling Kettles: Understanding Reciprocal Relationships In The Workplace, Gavin Mason, Garry Nicholson
Kitkats And Boiling Kettles: Understanding Reciprocal Relationships In The Workplace, Gavin Mason, Garry Nicholson
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Often referred to as a law, principle, norm or rule, reciprocity can be defined as a state or condition of free interchange or mutual responsiveness. This paper considers the importance of reciprocity in organisational settings, whilst identifying three reciprocal exchange behaviours of which leaders should be aware. A Socratic dialogue using the Nelson/Heckmann approach is adopted as a research method, with the primary methodological concern being that of the axiological field of philosophy. Axiology deals with the nature of value and asks what is intrinsically worthwhile. This can lead to multiple questions about what we value in an organisational context. …

The focus of this paper is on the importance of understanding the selection and testing process for top-level organizational leaders, managers, and supervisors and identifying the reasons why so many organizations are unsuccessful in selecting people for those critical positions. The paper begins by identifying five major problems that explain why organizations are limited in their ability to select the right people for top level managerial and leadership positions. Citing information from scholars, academic institutions, research organizations, and the Society for Human Resource Management, we identify root causes of “the leader selection problem” and offer eight specific recommendations for addressing …
Creating Trust: A Leadership Priority, Joseph P. Hester
Creating Trust: A Leadership Priority, Joseph P. Hester
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Ethical leadership, although outwardly displayed, is an intrinsic commitment coming from somewhere inside of us, of “the kind imagined,” as Lippman would say, “conceived and understood” within the circumstances of everyday life, and conditioned individually. Here caution needs to be taken for individuality can lead to productivity and creativity or quickly morph into negative and damaging behaviors.

Leadership Ethics As A Political Instrument – Normative Challenges Of Global Chinese Expansion For Western Enterprise Cultures, Elmar Nass
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Chinese enterprises with a global focus are emerging as strong competitors in the international market while simultaneously acquiring foreign companies or substantial stakes in them. Distinct leadership paradigms intersect during interactions or within change processes under Chinese influence, significantly impacting goals, strategies, and actions in leadership culture. Chinese businesses are exporting a leadership culture previously unknown in the West. Its ideal follows the large-scale cultural policy of Sinicization, promulgated by state and party leader Xi Jinping. As an ideal model of Sinicized leadership, it is rooted in Sino-Marxist values and infused with Confucian and market-oriented elements. This article deciphers the …

A Roadmap For The Integrative Hr Leadership Theory Of Intangible Competitive Advantage, Mostafa Sayyadi, Michael J. Provitera
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Building a dynamic and values-based company is more about the intangible elements of the organization than the financial balance sheet. The capabilities of organizations far exceed profitability potential. People, teams, and structure are the true drivers of success. The aim of this article is to present an intergrade HR leadership theory to effectively shed light on the intangible assets of organizations that far succeed the technical and financial components. In this article, it is assumed that the emergence of dynamic capabilities depends on the intellectual foundations formed in the company, and these foundations can be included in three levels: individual, …

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation |

Detecting Compromised Items In Computerized Linear Testing: A Novel Approach Using Autoencoders And Bert, Yiqin Pan, Sandip Sinharay
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation |
Item compromise is a significant concern in the testing industry. We propose a novel approach for detecting compromised items in computerized linear testing by analyzing response times and scores. Our method consists of three primary components. First, we employ autoencoders, a type of neural network, to model response times and scores, capturing the unique characteristics of each item and examinee. Second, we develop a BERT-based model to analyze examinees’ response patterns, predict expected response times. The characteristic vectors generated by the autoencoders are integrated into the BERT-based model, enhancing its ability to recognize response patterns. Third, an algorithm is designed …

Chris M. Ormerod, Alexander Kwako
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation |

Automated Text Scoring In The Age Of Generative Ai For The Gpu-Poor, Chris M. Ormerod, Alexander Kwako
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation |
Abstract Current research on generative language models (GLMs) for automated text scoring (ATS) has focused almost exclusively on querying proprietary models via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Yet such practices raise issues around transparency and security, and these methods offer little in the way of efficiency or customizability. With the recent proliferation of smaller, open-source models, there is the option to explore GLMs with computers equipped with modest, consumer-grade hardware—that is, for the “GPU poor.” In this study, we analyze the performance and efficiency of open-source, small-scale GLMs for ATS. Results show that GLMs can be fine-tuned to achieve adequate, though …

Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene was elected as the U.S. Representative from Georgia in November, 2020; her term of office began on January 3, 2021. On that day, Democratic Representative Jahana Hayes denounced Greene for “espousing hateful rhetoric and conspiracy theories about the legitimacy of mass school shootings,” expressing this sentiment in a letter to the Republican leadership in the House which was posted on Twitter. Hayes argued that Greene should not be appointed to the House Committee on Education and Labor. The next day, Representative Greene responded with an apologia on the House floor. This defense in turn prompted Democratic …
