Up In Arms: Slingstone Assemblages From The Late Prehistoric Sites Of ‘En Ẓippori And ‘En Esur, Gil Haklay, Hendrik Bron, Dina Shalem, Ianir Milevski, Nimrod Getzov
'Atiqot
This paper presents the slingstone assemblages recovered from two large-scale excavations at the Late Pottery Neolithic/Early Chalcolithic (c. 5800–4500 cal BCE) sites of ‘En Ẓippori and ‘En Esur. Based on contextual, morphometric and other archaeological data, we suggest that during this time, the slings and slingstones were used as weapons. The high number of slingstones found within the settlements, and the traits of systematic production they reflect (formalization, standardization and time-consuming manufacturing), point to an organized production of weapons, interpreted as an escalation in the preparations for war, alluding to the possible existence of local power centers in the region.

Establishing A Secure Sharing Environment Using Partial Cryptographic Keys, Salmaan Rashid
Defensive Publications Series
A system for establishing a secure sharing environment using partial cryptographic keys. The proposed system uses a complete cryptographic key divided into multiple partial keys and provided to two or more participants. The participants attest each TEE of the secure sharing environment desired for use and send, to each TEE, their respective partial key. Each TEE combines the received partial keys to generate the complete cryptographic key. Using the complete cryptographic key, the TEEs can securely communicate and share data with each other.

Optimizing Network Switch Power Consumption Via Smart Led Control, Kabiraj Sethi, Andrew Lu, Ramesh Yeevani
Defensive Publications Series
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on network switches provide useful visual indication of switch activity and important alerts of potential anomalies. Constant activation of these LEDs may lead to energy waste because an interested user is often not nearby to observe them. Conventional techniques for controlling LEDs typically allow users to use a Command Line Interface (CLI) command or Graphical User Interface (GUI) click to turn the LEDs off. However, these conventional approaches are inflexible and require significant user involvement. To address these issues, techniques proposed herein provide SmartLED, an intelligent LED control that leverages proximity sensors, physical buttons, and/or user input …

The Changing Geography Of Population Centroids In The United States Between 1970 And 1990, Neela Thapar, David Wong, Jay Lee
The Geographical Bulletin
Population centroids are useful tools in describing the general trend of population movements. This paper uses population centroids to show the changing geography of the U.S. population between 1970 to 1990. Data of population counts of census tracts and census block groups were obtained from the Internet. With a geographical information system, weighted population centroids for each of the 48 states in the continental U.S., four census regions, and nine census divisions for 1970, 1980 and 1990 were calculated. The findings indicate that the westward movement of the U.S. population remains strong and that a southward trend of population movement …

The majority of cities had both gains and losses. Employment in 7 categories was analyzed for the 20 largest U.S. metropolitan regions. New York and Washington DC exhibited some similarity in their roles as shapers of the services economy. Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit were similar in the role …

Empowering Inner City Communities: Some Observations, Engdawork Desta
The Geographical Bulletin
The federal government's engagement in dealing with U.S. inner city concerns has been extensive although the results have not been satisfactory. In spite of repeated special considerations given to the problems, the lack of lasting solutions necessitated launching new urban empowerment zone and enterprise community projects in recent years. This paper reflects on the attempts made thus far to change inner city conditions and the inevitable challenges of development faced in market economies. Certain preliminary assessments are made with regard to the current Empowerment Zone project, using Baltimore city as an example.

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Rediscovering The Importance Of Geography, Alexander B. Murphy
The Geographical Bulletin
As Americans struggle to understand their place in a world characterized by instant global communications, shifting geopolitical relationships, and growing evidence of environmental change, it is not surprising that the venerable discipline of geography is experiencing a renaissance in the United States. More elementary and secondary schools now require courses in geography, and the College Board is adding the subject to its Advanced Placement program. In higher education, students are enrolling in geography courses in unprecedented numbers. Between 1985-86 and 1994-95 the number of bachelor's degrees awarded in geography increased from 3056 to 4295. Not coincidentally, more businesses are looking …
