Math Education: A Comprehensive Guide To Teaching The Foundations, Claudia Jayne Staruch

Honors College Theses

This thesis investigates the critical need for strong foundational mathematics education for adults. More specifically, for incarcerated individuals who lack basic numeracy skills because of the systematic inequalities that they have faced, the need for a mathematics foundation is even higher. This work emphasizes a non-technological approach to teaching these basics through qualitative analysis, including teaching strategies and practical lessons, while recognizing the various barriers many learners face. This research serves as a guide for educators to use for how to sequence and pace lessons, address certain learning styles, and gain classroom engagement, comprehension, and long-term retention of the materials. …

Elucidating The Role Of Astrocytes In Norepinephrine Neuromodulation, Katheryn Bry Lefton Dec 2024

Elucidating The Role Of Astrocytes In Norepinephrine Neuromodulation, Katheryn Bry Lefton

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Norepinephrine, a wakefulness-associated neuromodulator, profoundly reshapes neural systems, from synaptic circuits to behavior. Through decades of research, a substantial catalogue on the effects of noradrenergic signaling on behavior and networks has been generated. How norepinephrine remodels synaptic circuitry is widely thought to underlie the larger changes in neural networks and behavior, highlighting the need for a more thorough understanding of the circuit effects of norepinephrine neuromodulation. However, the mechanistic details of the norepinephrine on synapses are still unclear. In recent decades, a large body of work has shown that norepinephrine acts not just on neurons, but on glial cells including …

Hypernetwork Reconstruction From Time-Series Measurements, Ziyi Peng, Bharat Singhal, Jr-Shin Li

Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research

Hypernetworks, which enable joint interactions among three or more nodes, reveal complex network dynamics underlying various systems. This study focuses on reconstructing hypernetwork connectivity structures from time-series data. By transforming the inference task into a bilinear optimization problem, we develop an iterative algorithm to recover adjacency matrices and coupling strengths accurately. Our method's robustness is validated with phase-coupled oscillator models, achieving an average AUC score of 0.8 for connectivity reconstruction. Future directions include enhancing algorithm efficiency for larger networks and refining coupling strength estimations. This work advances network inference by offering a scalable and accurate approach to decoding higher-order network …

All Decisions

The court granted summary judgment based on the petitioner and respondent's relationship as a couple, living together with children in common. After the petitioner moved out, a Family Court child support order was issued. While no general familial eviction exception exists, the support obligation prevented maintaining the summary proceeding. However, the court denied respondent's motion for summary judgment on harassment, ruling that the two-family home status did not allow a rebuttable presumption of harassment. The court dismissed the entire case without opportunity to restore the harassment claim.

Tag-Based Security In C: Writing And Specifying Flexible Protection, Sean Noble Anderson Dec 2024

Tag-Based Security In C: Writing And Specifying Flexible Protection, Sean Noble Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

The C language is ubiquitous and insecure. Tag-based security policies offer a flexible toolkit for runtime protection, including policies that mitigate the effects of undetected programming bugs and those that enforce security properties of the program logic. But tag policies can be difficult to define, and the protection that they offer can be difficult to specify and to prove.

This dissertation builds from an assembly-level specification of stack safety, encompassing the essential control-flow structure of C and other high level languages, to a C source-level policy definition framework called Tagged C. Tagged C includes a variant C semantics parameterized by …

Investigating Student Expectations, Buy-In, And Engagement In Lower Division Undergraduate Chemistry Labs, Elizabeth Blanche Vaughan

Dissertations and Theses

Laboratory courses constitute an integral aspect of chemistry education at the undergraduate level. Despite their prominence, a growing number of researchers have begun to think more critically about the value of laboratory learning experiences. As pedagogical decisions should be based on evidence, it is necessary for chemistry education researchers and practitioners to investigate the claim that teaching laboratories are a valuable part of science education. Therefore, the aim of this dissertation was to address one small section of this gap in the literature by obtaining a more robust understanding of students' expectations, buy-in, and engagement in lower division, undergraduate, chemistry …

Recovery Of Black Carbon Concentrations In Burned Forests In Wyoming, Usa, Monica Vanesa Zapata Villegas Dec 2024

Recovery Of Black Carbon Concentrations In Burned Forests In Wyoming, Usa, Monica Vanesa Zapata Villegas

Dissertations and Theses

Burned forests that remain standing following fire release light-absorbing particles (LAPs), including black carbon (BC), into winter snowpacks, reducing snow surface albedo and accelerating snowmelt timing for decades postfire. Although the role of LAPs in seasonal snow has been extensively studied, the spatiotemporal variability of LAPs' contributions to snowmelt relative to time-since-fire and burn severity remains unknown. This study aimed to quantify the spatiotemporal variability of forest fire effects on LAPs in snow and associated snow albedo in the Triple Divide region of western Wyoming, headwaters of the Colorado, Columbia, and Missouri rivers. Using geochemical analysis and radiative transfer modeling, …

Landslide Mapping, Characterization, And Hazard Assessment With 3d Slope Stability Modeling In White Bluffs, Washington State, Anna Tsitsivas Dec 2024

Landslide Mapping, Characterization, And Hazard Assessment With 3d Slope Stability Modeling In White Bluffs, Washington State, Anna Tsitsivas

Dissertations and Theses

Slope failures shape the landscape by moving unstable material downslope and, in doing so, become a great hazard to all those in their path. Understanding the mechanisms that control landslide location, timing, size, type, and runout - and therefore hazards - requires a deep understanding of the local geology, stratigraphy, and groundwater conditions. Along White Bluffs, in south-central Washington, landslides of several failure styles have likely been triggered by an increased water table in recent decades, threatening both farmland behind the bluffs and habitat below. This study focuses on characterizing potential groundwater sources and determining controls on spatial and temporal …

Chemotherapy is often combined with immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) to enhance immunotherapy responses. Despite the approval of chemo-immunotherapy in multiple human cancers, many immunologically cold tumors remain unresponsive. The mechanisms determining the immunogenicity of chemotherapy are elusive. Here, we identify the ER stress sensor IRE1α as a critical checkpoint that restricts the immunostimulatory effects of taxane-chemotherapy and prevents the innate immune recognition of immunologically cold triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). IRE1α RNase silences taxane-induced dsRNA through RIDD (Regulated IRE1-Dependent Decay) to prevent NLRP3 inflammasome–dependent pyroptosis. Inhibition of IRE1α in Trp53−/− TNBC allows taxane to induce extensive dsRNAs that are sensed …
