Ceo General Ability And The Takeover Market, A. Can Inci, Leila Zbib Dec 2024

Ceo General Ability And The Takeover Market, A. Can Inci, Leila Zbib

Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles

The purpose of this study is to examine the mechanisms behind the higher performance of generalist CEOs in the takeover market compared to their specialist counterparts as measured by the market reactions to the deal announcement. We study three non-inclusive mechanisms that could enhance the performance in the takeover market for the generalist CEOs: target complexity, deal structure, and the CEO’s past merger and acquisitions (M&A) activity. We proxy target complexity by the size of the target firm, the number of segments, and the level of R&D. For the deal structure, we study the effect of tender offer, horizontal acquisition, …

The Effect Of Dha On Myo-Inositol Levels In Lymphoblasts Derived From Patients With Bipolar Disorder, Katherine Pierre Dec 2024

The Effect Of Dha On Myo-Inositol Levels In Lymphoblasts Derived From Patients With Bipolar Disorder, Katherine Pierre

Honors Theses

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that is characterized by recurring episodes of mania and depression. Bipolar I disorder is accompanied by severe episodes of mania and depression, while bipolar II disorder is characterized by a milder form of mania. It has been hypothesized that currently approved treatments for this disorder, lithium and valproic acid, exert their therapeutic effect by decreasing myo-inositol levels intracellularly. However, these treatments may lead to undesired side effects, creating a need for safer treatments. Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that have been shown to be effective in relieving symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Emmanuel: Everywhere, Always, Forever, Leah Jolly

CTS Student Publications and Creative Works

As I think about Emmanuel, God with us, this Advent, I’m comforted that even when my circumstances change, those I love are hurting, and the stresses of life threaten to overwhelm me, Emmanuel does not change. He is the same forever. Emmanuel is everywhere, always, and forever. God with us is a reminder that even when circumstances change and all seems hopeless, there is always hope because God is with us. I thank God for being with me constantly and consistently, both now and forever.

Investigation Of Real-Time Gaseous Thermal Decomposition Products Of Representative Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas), Kateřina Litvanová, Bethany Klemetstrud, Feng Xiao, Alena Kubatova

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The thermal decomposition of per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is poorly understood. Here, we present an innovative, comprehensive analytical method to investigate their thermal decomposition, including perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), alcohol, sulfonates, and GenX (acid dimer), focusing on identifying their breakdown products. In this study, evolved gas analysis–mass spectrometry (EGA-MS) was used for fast real-time screening to determine the significant temperatures to be investigated with the thermal desorption-pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD-Py-GC-MS), which provided detailed information about evolved PFAS and their breakdown products. This approach enabled a systematic study of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) ranging from C3 to …

5-Substituted Flavones—Another Class Of Potent Triplex Dna-Specific Ligands As Antigene Enhancers, Landy Gu, Nghia Tran, Vanessa M. Rangel, Mandeep Singh, Krege M. Christison, Geoff P. Lin-Cereghino, Liang Xue

Pacific Faculty Work

In the field of drug development, the quest for novel compounds that bind to DNA with high affinity and specificity never ends. In the present work, we report the newest development in this field, namely, triplex DNA-specific binding ligands based on the 5-substituted flavone scaffold in our lab. Biophysical studies showed that the newly synthesized flavone derivatives (depending on the side chains) bind to triplex DNA with binding affinities better than or similar to 5-substituted 3,3′,4′,7-tetramethoxyflavonoids. These compounds selectively stabilize triplex DNA while having little effect on duplex DNA, as verified by various biophysical methods. A detailed structural analysis suggested …

In the past decade, cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized the field of oncology. Major immunotherapy approaches such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, cancer vaccines, adoptive cell therapy, cytokines, and immunomodulators have shown great promise in preclinical and clinical settings. Among them, immunomodulatory agents including cancer vaccines are particularly appealing; however, they face limitations, notably the absence of efficient and precise targeted delivery of immune-modulatory agents to specific immune cells and the potential for off-target toxicity. Nanomaterials can play a pivotal role in addressing targeting and other challenges in cancer immunotherapy. Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs) can enhance the efficacy of cancer vaccines …

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Biological soil crust communities (biocrusts) establishing on gypsum soils have been well-documented for their prolific appearance and rich diversity of lichens and bryophytes. However, studies characterizing gypsum biocrusts have occurred primarily outside of the U.S., most of which lack comparisons to other soil types. We conducted intensive field surveys to evaluate the ground cover and frequency of biocrust functional groups and moss species on gypsum and non-gypsum soils in the U.S. regions with the most extensive gypsum outcrops, the northern Chihuahuan and eastern Mojave Deserts. Study sites were stratified by geomorphology and paired, so that every gypsum site was matched …
