Women Of Will For Nation Building In Pramoedya’S Three Early Novels, Novita Dewi
Women Of Will For Nation Building In Pramoedya’S Three Early Novels, Novita Dewi
Kritika Kultura
Of great interest to Pramoedya’s writing, which is largely neglected, is the presence of ordinary women as supporting characters. This paper discusses the depiction of strong- willed women who embody the desired character that the Indonesian nationalists in the 1950s sought to construct in Pramoedya’s three early novels, i.e. Keluarga Gerilya [The Guerilla Family] (1950), Korupsi [Corruption] (1954), and Sekali Peristiwa di Banten Selatan [Once Upon A Time in South Banten] (1958). Written during the period when nationalism in the country began to crack, the three novels present minor but arresting female characters: these women are able to find their …

Once Upon A Time: A Floating Opera John Barth’S Death-Defying Art Of Writing, Mahsa Hashemi, Farideh Pourgiv
Kritika Kultura
This study seeks to demonstrate the trend and development of Barth’s concept of writing and authorial presence, and the emphasis that Barth puts on the very act of narration/writing, as a means of deferring death and entitling writing as the art that defeats death. As the ultimate storyteller of the postmodern dispensation, John Barth has achieved prominence in his treatment of the contemporary man’s eternal engagement with their intuition of a hovering ultimacy and death, and the strategies of survival that his characters adopt in order to defy the diminishing of the self. He creates characters who are either literally …
Discursive Formations And The Ambivalent Nation In Gina Apostol’S The Revolution According To Raymundo Mata, Jillian Joyce Ong Tan
Discursive Formations And The Ambivalent Nation In Gina Apostol’S The Revolution According To Raymundo Mata, Jillian Joyce Ong Tan
Kritika Kultura
Gina Apostol’s The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata brings to the fore a multi- contested textual space that not only politicizes the act of reading, but more importantly, engages in a form of nation-building or imagining. The paper will demonstrate through a two-prong analysis of form and content that this novel utilizes postmodern modes of articulation such as parody, intertextuality, and a non-sequential temporal narrative in order to examine knowledge-productions, politics of representation, agency, and nationhood that have become immanent and critical in the emerging and rapidly-developing field of theoretical discourse that seeks to illuminate Philippine postcoloniality. It will also …

What The Planetary Filipino Should Know: San Juan Versus Almario, Maximino U. Pulan Jr.
What The Planetary Filipino Should Know: San Juan Versus Almario, Maximino U. Pulan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
An assessment of the debate between E. San Juan Jr. and Virgilio S. Almario, the essay inquires into what it calls the planetary unconscious of Filipino literary production. The essay is divided into two parts. The first part explains the historical context that informs the San Juan-Almario debate. The second part focuses on the planetary implications of their exchange. The essay argues that Filipino literature should be viewed from a more planetary perspective. Moreover, it suggests that the example of Filipino literature has much to contribute to the reinvention of world literature as a practice and concept, one that provides …

Si E. San Juan Bilang “Interpretant”, Virgilio S. Almario
Kritika Kultura
In this rejoinder to E. San Juan’s lecture “Kahulugan, Katotohan, Katwiran: Pagpapakilala sa Semiotika ni Charles Sanders Peirce,” Almario addresses San Juan’s critique of his reading of Cirio H. Panganiban’s poem in his essay “Pormalismo at Marxismo sa Pagbasa ng ‘Three O’ Clock in the Morning.’” Almario’s essay was delivered in 1992 in a seminar at Ateneo de Manila University and published in 2006 in his book Pag-unawa sa Ating Pagtula. Although Almario lauds San Juan’s critical interventions on C.S. Peirce’s semiotics, which updates Saussurian linguistics with the role of the “Interpretant,” he nevertheless deplores San Juan’s shortsightedness when the …

Kahulugan, Katotohanan, Katwiran: Pagpapakilala Sa Semiotika Ni Charles Sanders Peirce, E. San Juan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
This essay elaborates on crucial aspects of the semiotics of American pragmaticist Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–1914) and applies them to two Filipino texts: “Three O’Clock in the Morning” by Cirio H. Panganiban and “Kristal na Tubig” by Antonio Rosales. Delivered first in 2 March 2012 as part of the Kritika Kultura lecture series at Ateneo de Manila University, the essay makes a number of distinct yet interrelated claims before proceeding to an interpretation of the aforementioned texts. First, San Juan points out the communal (“komunidad”) underpinning of Peirce’s formulations: San Juan argues that only within a social context—where agreed-upon methods, …

Manila By Night As Thirdspace, Patrick F. Campos
Manila By Night As Thirdspace, Patrick F. Campos
Kritika Kultura
The Marcosian signifier in Manila by Night has been inescapably registered in the production, distribution, and exhibition of the film and in the film text itself. The paper revisits these evaluations of the film by using Edward Soja’s broader notion of “thirdspace.” It rereads Manila by Night as Bernal’s concept of the city which approximates the lived dimension of urban spaces vis-à-vis the “concept city” of the Marcoses. Such a revaluation of Manila by Night as thirdspace 1) locates the film at the center of wider spatio-temporal interrelationship—from “global” to “national” to “cinematic” space, and 2) salvages the epistemological concerns …
Marcos, Brocka, Bernal, City Films, And The Contestation For Imagery Of Nation, Rolando B. Tolentino
Marcos, Brocka, Bernal, City Films, And The Contestation For Imagery Of Nation, Rolando B. Tolentino
Kritika Kultura
The essay maps out the contestation for imagery of nation with the Marcoses on the one hand, and two of the most outstanding filmmakers of the era on the other hand. The Marcoses set out a megalomania of infrastructures and images that echoed the Imeldific vision of “the true, the good, and the beautiful.” I counterpose the major city films of Lino Brocka (Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag) and Ishmael Bernal (Manila by Night) to provide a contest to the official imagery of the nation. These two films uniquely evoke an intimate dialog with and critique of the Marcoses’ …

To Conform Or Not To Conform, That Is The Genderqueer Question: Re-Examining The Lesbian Identity In Bernal’S Manila By Night, Libay Linsangan Cantor
Kritika Kultura
This paper is an attempt to re-read the identity politics surrounding the lesbian character as presented in Ishmael Bernal’s classic film Manila by Night. In doing so, it hopes to trace where the identification of the lesbian construct is coming from, and in the process investigates if the genderqueer construct in Philippine cinema intersects within this discourse.
The Long Take: Passage As Form In The Philippine Film, Patrick D. Flores
The Long Take: Passage As Form In The Philippine Film, Patrick D. Flores
Kritika Kultura
The essay evolves a thesis around the scene in Manila by Night involving a gay couturier (Manay Sharon) and a blind masseuse (Bea) who weave through a dark alley in the city and engage in a meandering exchange. It asks the question: Can Philippine film theory contemplate a different notion of “passage” or “interval” that is not exclusively a function of plot or an always-already marker of time? How does this notion reference the heterogeneous locale intrinsic to it? Using this specific scene as aperture, it probes other examples in the Philippine oeuvre through such films as Maryo J. de …

Bernal As Auteur: Primary Biographical Notes, Bayani Santos Jr.
Kritika Kultura
The paper discloses selected author-considered details on Ishmael Bernal’s family and clan background that can provide further insights on his stature as an auteur, culled from a detailed clan story, which describes the values, problems, conflicts, quirks, and gifts of the clan that nurtured Bernal. It also considers a number of Bernal films and several previously unavailable writings in terms of their content, which indicate confluences in Bernal’s thinking with those of other family members. The paper uses the politique des auteurs, whose proponents uphold the primacy of the director as the creative force behind the creation of a film, …
Film Plastics In Manila By Night, Joel David
Film Plastics In Manila By Night, Joel David
Kritika Kultura
As a sample of Third World cinema, Manila by Night (and by association its director, Ishmael Bernal) endured a reputation for technical inadequacy—an ironic assessment, considering its top-rank status in the Philippine film canon. This paper will attempt to revaluate the movie’s aesthetic stature vis-à-vis movements specific to Third Cinema, focusing on ethnographic filmmaking. First will be an analysis of the film’s visual surface, with a consideration of scene selections/limitations/restrictions, the limiting and liberating aspect of night shooting, and the independent-minded spirit which refused to conform to standards of surface polish in filmmaking, as dictated by critics and practitioners. Second …

For each domain of an organization a corresponding IP address is identified. For each corresponding IP address, its registration, ownership information, and/or the corresponding media access control (MAC). Optionally, whether the IP address is allocated to an existing host is determined. For each IP address, address allocation requests are repeatedly sent until the IP address of interest is allocated in response to one of the requests. Alternatively, an API reporting the address is available is queried to determine whether the IP address of interest is currently allocated or available for allocation. As a result, cloud service providers can mitigate the …

Investigating Effective Treatments Of Ocd And Related Disorders In Women, Madeline L. Mccarthy
Investigating Effective Treatments Of Ocd And Related Disorders In Women, Madeline L. Mccarthy
Counselor Education Capstones
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an under-researched mental health disorder, and many studies predominantly include male participants. Therefore, many existing treatments are based on the symptoms and results of male participants. Of the studies targeting women with OCD, much of the reliable research regards pregnancy, hormones, or phases of the menstrual cycle. While these studies have shown connections between OCD symptoms and hormones, particularly regarding pregnancy and the menstrual cycle, there is a lack of general research on effective OCD treatments for women. Additionally, many of the treatment options and medications included in these studies are those discovered through studies with …

Exploring The Complexities Of Suicide Loss: Evaluating Bereavement Experiences, Survivor Needs, And Implications For Counselors, Kristen O. Piringer, Kristen O. Piringer
Counselor Education Capstones
Suicide exposure is common and affects a plethora of people including family members, friends, and coworkers. Suicide bereavement is intricate and involves a variety of symptoms that are not common with all types of grief including: shame, guilt, isolation, rejection, trauma, and suicidal ideation. The complexities of suicide bereavement may lead to the development or exacerbation of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The grieving period is often extended for years. Suicide bereavement is frequently complicated by stigma and changes in relationships due to insensitivity or avoidance. Suicide survivors express the need for recognition …
A Filter-Based Model Of Visual Recognition, Olivia Rose Bockler
A Filter-Based Model Of Visual Recognition, Olivia Rose Bockler
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Visual recognition, a key perceptual process, enables primates to identify faces, food, tools, and potential threats in their environment. Cortical neurons along the ventral visual stream—spanning from early visual cortex (V1) through inferotemporal cortex (IT), with long-range projections to ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC)—are essential for visual recognition. Traditional models propose that neuronal representations increase in complexity in each stage of this pathway, culminating in object-specific representations in higher-order cortex. However, this hypothesis remains debated, particularly as artificial visual models have countered that individual neurons along this pathway may function more as filters contributing to distributed representations of objects. Thus, this …

The Role Of Mir-34a In Pathological Neovascularization As Seen In Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Jason Colasanti
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss among the elderly, affecting nearly 200 million people worldwide. AMD impacts the macula, which is the small, central area of the retina responsible for high-acuity vision. The exudative (wet) form of late-stage AMD is the most severe, accounting for ninety percent of the legally blind patients with AMD. Wet AMD is characterized by the abnormal growth of blood vessels and fluid leakage beneath the retina known as choroidal neovascularization (CNV), directly resulting in vision loss. While anti-VEGFa targeted therapies have been the gold standard for ameliorating wet AMD …

Technology Development Of High-Resolution Single-Cell Lineage Tracing For Cell Reprogramming Systems, Sadie Vanhorn
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A critical element of cell identity is the cell that created the observed cell. This parent cell dictates many aspects of its identity, whether measured by function, phenotype, or specific assays. The cell’s lineage impacts the ability of the cell to differentiate into final cell types in development or successfully reprogram in direct cell reprogramming. Here, we evolve molecular barcoding techniques to increase the resolution of lineage recording at single-cell resolution. Using single-cell RNA-sequencing as the readout for this measurement, polyadenylated reporter gene transcripts with engineered 3’ untranslated regions were designed to initially label and then record lineage information. While …

Multi-Omic Analysis Of Phototrophic Extracellular Electron Uptake In Novel Rhodovulum Spp. Isolated From A Marine Estuary, Emily J. Davenport
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbial metabolisms are incredibly versatile and dynamic, allowing adaptive strategies for growth in even the most limiting environments. For an ever-increasing number of microbes, this includes utilizing soluble or insoluble inorganic mineral species as electron donors, driving geochemical cycles and microbial metabolisms. This metabolic function of transporting electrons derived from the extracellular environment across cell membranes is called extracellular electron uptake (EEU). Within (photo)autotrophs, (p)EEU also sustains CO2 fixation to cell biomass, implicating a potentially fundamental role of microbial carbon cycling in aquatic and soil ecosystems. A model metabolic scheme of pEEU occurring in natural environments is photoferrotrophy, which pairs …

Wool, Cotton, And Silk: The Language Of Fashion In The Works Of Three Modern Japanese Women Writers (1920-1952), Yuning Henares
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines portrayals of clothes made from wool, cotton and silk in works by three modern Japanese women writers: Hayashi Fumiko, Hasegawa Shigure, and Koizumi Kikue. By analyzing portrayals of clothing and textiles and contextualizing them in modern Japanese society, this dissertation aims to see how women writers used textiles and clothing as motifs in their work, how these textiles and clothing conveyed various aspects of their fictional characters, and how these textiles and clothing represented ideas such as modernity, nostalgia, and imperialism. This dissertation argues that textiles and clothes that are based on wool, silk, and cotton tell …

Unraveling Ancient Andean Camelid Herding Strategies Using Multi-Isotope Analyses, Lucia Diaz
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pastoral communities around the globe form herding strategies based on traditional ecological knowledge to make sense of mutualistic human, animal, and environmental interactions. Pastoralists develop culturally specific traditional knowledge systems surrounding animals and environments that shape decision-making in herding practices and resource management strategies during times of crisis and change. To mitigate socio-political and climatic changes, such as conflict or competition over pastures, or flooding and drought, pastoralists convert local ecological knowledge into strategies including animal mobility across varying altitudes, pasture maintenance through irrigation and pasture rotation, and extended kin support for herding and caravanning. Previous archaeological studies have revealed …
