The Ethical Requirements To Avoid Clinical Error Via Safety, Augustus Nweze, Augustus Ifeanyi Nweze Fr
The Ethical Requirements To Avoid Clinical Error Via Safety, Augustus Nweze, Augustus Ifeanyi Nweze Fr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Establishing safety programs across healthcare organizations will help to eliminate clinical errors and promote patient safety goals such as culture of quality and safety. Following the 1999 IOM Report, To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, regarding the high rate of injuries and deaths due to medical errors, healthcare institutions and policymakers at all levels have continued to draw attention to patient safety programs. As a result, patient safety programs have been implemented nationally to avoid clinical error in healthcare. Regulatory agencies like The Joint Commission, which oversees the voluntary accreditation of hospitals in the U.S. continues to …
Investigating Anomalous Experiences In Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Pavan Brar
Investigating Anomalous Experiences In Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Pavan Brar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The self-disorder model provides a phenomenological framework for understanding how the core symptoms of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSDs) are rooted in an instability of minimal selfhood. This instability involves a range of ‘anomalous experiences’: transformations in an individual’s perceptual field and sense of being an agent of action. The explanatory value of this theoretical model can be summarized in two claims about the role of anomalous experiences in self-disorders: (1) anomalous experiences express a common trait-like disturbance that is characteristic of SSDs, and (2) anomalous experiences contribute to the progression of self-disorders into SSDs. Although hypotheses consistent with the first …
The Ethical Contributions Of Nudges To Healthcare, Ian Doherty
The Ethical Contributions Of Nudges To Healthcare, Ian Doherty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“The Ethical Contributions of Nudges to Healthcare” examines the ethical use, implications, and rationale for using nudges in healthcare. The use of nudges in healthcare are being empirically examined. This leaves much to be examined from the ethical perspective. To examine the ethical perspective, the dissertation lays out how nudges interact with and enhance the biomedical principles of autonomy and beneficence. The dissertation then turns to clinical ethics. Nudges, more specifically the framing effect, are paired with trust in the patient-physician relationship to discern how best to aid a patient in his or her medical decision-making. The dissertation then investigates …
The Ethics Of Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Policies, Practice, And Ethical Oversight, Mariah Chobany
The Ethics Of Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Policies, Practice, And Ethical Oversight, Mariah Chobany
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a specialized field of medicine, psychiatry presents unique ethical challenges and dilemmas distinct from other medical disciplines. A particularly complex aspect of psychiatric care involves the involuntary treatment of patients who may be unable to make informed decisions about their care or participation in research due to the debilitating effects of their psychiatric condition. This presents a significant challenge for providers and researchers, particularly concerning capacity issues and the informed consent process. Despite the intricacies and complexities of ethical dilemmas in psychiatric treatment and research, there is a notable lack of comprehensive guidance in policies and practices on addressing …

Toward Prototypical Vision Clustering, James Chenhao Liang
Toward Prototypical Vision Clustering, James Chenhao Liang
Theses
Over the past decades, deep learning methods have emerged as the predominant approach in computer vision. Most approaches rely on complex interactions among pixels, involving heavy computations. However, Human vision possesses a unique attention mechanism that selectively focuses on relevant parts of the visual field while disregarding irrelevant information. This can be likened to a clustering approach, in which individual pixel points are decomposed and reorganized into relevant concepts to address various tasks. This dissertation explores the frontier of vision clustering by integrating innovative prototypical learning with advanced Transformer architectures, which heralds a significant paradigm shift applied to vision clustering. …
If It Was Good Enough To Work Against The Nazis . . . : Revitalizing The Foreign Agents Registration Act To Regulate Modern Foreign Electioneering, Troy Mccurry
Catholic University Law Review
News headlines from the 2016 election to the present have described an ongoing political scandal that is unmatched in modern history: continued attempts of foreign interference in U.S. elections. It is fairly obvious that the United States lacks adequate restrictions to prevent foreign interference in U.S. elections. It therefore needs a law that—while passing constitutional scrutiny—prohibits more foreign political activity than what is currently covered, especially in relation to social media. This should be a simple and effective legislative fix, a return to the core aspects of the original Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) that focuses on potential electioneering of …

The Houge type of X-linked syndromic intellectual developmental disorder (MRXSHG) encompasses a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by intellectual disability (ID), language/speech delay, attention issues, and epilepsy. These conditions arise from hemizygous or heterozygous deletions, along with point mutations, affecting CNKSR2, a gene located at Xp22.12. CNKSR2, also known as CNK2 or MAGUIN, functions as a synaptic scaffolding molecule within the neuronal postsynaptic density (PSD) of the central nervous system. It acts as a link connecting postsynaptic structural proteins, such as PSD95 and S-SCAM, by employing multiple functional domains crucial for synaptic signaling and protein–protein interactions. Predominantly expressed in dendrites, …

While in theory antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) deliver high-dose chemotherapy directly to target cells, numerous side effects are observed in clinical practice. We sought to determine the effect of linker design (cleavable versus non-cleavable), drug-to-antibody ratio (DAR), and free payload concentration on systemic toxicity. Two systematic reviews were performed via PubMed search of clinical trials published between January 1998—July 2022. Eligible studies: (1) clinical trial for cancer therapy in adults, (2) ≥ 1 study arm included a single-agent ADC, (3) ADC used was commercially available/FDA-approved. Data was extracted and pooled using generalized linear mixed effects logistic models. 40 clinical trials …
Defining The Chondrocyte “Mechanome”: How Mechanosensitive Ion Channels Trpv4 And Piezo1 Drive Changes In Gene Expression To Affect Cell Behavior And Cartilage Health, Daniel Raymond Palmer
Defining The Chondrocyte “Mechanome”: How Mechanosensitive Ion Channels Trpv4 And Piezo1 Drive Changes In Gene Expression To Affect Cell Behavior And Cartilage Health, Daniel Raymond Palmer
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Chondrocytes, the only native cell population of cartilage, utilize mechanosensitive transmembrane ion channels to sense mechanical forces. Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) is activated by physiologic levels of load (resulting in ~10% tissue deformation) while PIEZO1 is activated by supraphysiologic levels of load (resulting in >50% tissue deformation). TRPV4 activation promotes the expression of a limited number of chondrogenic genes and the production of vital cartilaginous matrix proteins, while PIEZO1 activation drives cell death and senescence, cytoskeletal weakening, and production of catabolic mediators, which contribute to the development of osteoarthritis (OA). However, the path connecting activation of these channels …

Integrating Physics And Deep Learning For Transmission-Less Attenuation Compensation In Clinical Spect, Zitong Yu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Attenuation compensation (AC) is beneficial for visual interpretation and serves as a prerequisite for quantification tasks in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. However, conventional AC methods typically rely on a separate X-ray CT component, leading to multiple challenges. In this context, studies have shown that scatter-window projection data contains information to estimate the attenuation distribution. Furthermore, large amounts of SPECT emission data in both photopeak and scatter-energy windows and corresponding CT scans are available. The ability of deep learning (DL) to model complex relationships by leveraging large datasets motivates its use for transmission-less AC in SPECT. Building upon the …

The exponential expansion of data in the digital world necessitates the development of effective methods for data transmission and storage. Data compression (DC) strategies are suggested to reduce the quantity of data stored or conveyed due to constrained resources. As a result of DC ideas' ability to efficiently use existing storage space and transmission capacity, different methods have been developed in various areas. Speech coding is a lossy method of coding; therefore, the output signal differs slightly from the input signal. Speech coding is useful for message encryption, communication over long distances and speech quality. In the fields of digital …
Predictors Of Sedimentary Organic Carbon In Seagrass Vegetated And Unvegetated Sediment In The Tamar Estuary, United Kingdom, Kathryn Pogson
Predictors Of Sedimentary Organic Carbon In Seagrass Vegetated And Unvegetated Sediment In The Tamar Estuary, United Kingdom, Kathryn Pogson
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Seagrass meadows are considered significant natural carbon sinks due to their ability to store large amounts of organic carbon (Corg) in their sediments. ‘Blue carbon strategies’ aim to utilise and enhance this ability to mitigate climate change. However, assessing the Corg content and the habitat characteristics that influence this, in both seagrass vegetated and adjacent unvegetated sediments is needed to improve ‘Blue Carbon’ assessments. Currently, adjacent unvegetated sediments are excluded from Blue Carbon assessments as investigations rarely incorporate them into study design, despite evidence suggesting that they can also store significant amounts of Corg. Mean …
