Complexation Of Diserinol Isophthalamide With Phosphorylated Biomolecules In Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Madeline Schultz, Neil A. Ellis, Nwanne D. Banor, Daniel A. Thomas
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Electrospray ionization (ESI) enables gentle transfer of biomolecules from solution to vacuum, facilitating the study of biomolecular structure under highly controlled conditions. However, biomolecules are desolvated during the ESI process, and the loss of ionic hydrogen bonds to solvent molecules can drive structural rearrangement, most prominently at solvent-exposed charge sites. Microsolvation reagents can bind to these bare charge sites in ESI mass spectrometry (ESI–MS) experiments, providing alternative intermolecular interaction partners. Previously, 18-crown-6 was shown to be an effective reagent for binding to cationic monoalkylammonium residues. More recently, diserinol isophthalamide (DIP) was reported as an analogous anionic microsolvation reagent, primarily for …

Liver transplantation often faces fairness challenges across subgroups defined by sensitive attributes such as age group, gender, and race/ethnicity. Machine learning models for outcome prediction can introduce additional biases. Therefore, we introduce Fairness through the Equitable Rate of Improvement in Multitask Learning (FERI) algorithm for fair predictions of graft failure risk in liver transplant patients. FERI constrains subgroup loss by balancing learning rates and preventing subgroup dominance in the training process. Our results show that FERI maintained high predictive accuracy with AUROC and AUPRC comparable to baseline models. More importantly, FERI demonstrated an ability to improve fairness without sacrificing accuracy. …

Beside Marriage Equality: Conversations On Supriyo, Danish Sheikh, Rupali Samuel
Socio-Legal Review
This case comment takes the form of an epistolary exchange between the authors as they reflect on the Indian Supreme Court’s 2023 judgment in Supriyo @ Supriya Chakraborty & Anr v Union of India, which denied the existence of a constitutional right to marriage and deferred the responsibility of legalising same-sex marriage to the legislature. Through a staged conversation, the comment explores personal subject positions, legal frameworks, and the intricate entanglements of intimacy and state recognition. The authors consider how the law leaves imprints on our bodies and, in turn, how our embodied lives reshape the law through acts …

Cultivating Attentiveness To Law In India Through Legal Anthropology, Deepa Das Acevedo, Jahnavi Chamarthi
Socio-Legal Review
This Article reviews and analyses scholarship at the intersection of anthropology and law. The first half of the Article provides context for understanding the boundaries, animating concerns, and tensions that have characterised the anthropology of law as an area of interdisciplinary inquiry. We focus especially on the subdiscipline’s Anglo-American history and show how a promising early period of engagement dissipated as both anthropologists and legal scholars lost enthusiasm for each others’ insights and methods. Then, we expand our analysis outward. Because legal anthropology belongs within, and is increasingly attentive to, the broader field of law and society scholarship, we explore …

Locating Socio-Legal Research In Pakistan: A Reflexive Approach, Maryam S Khan
Socio-Legal Review
This article presents a detailed survey of the sites of emergence and development of socio-legal research in Pakistan, locating it on a historical arc extending from the decolonisation era to contemporary times, and organically tracing its trajectory through contextual shifts in knowledge production more broadly. As such, the article takes a reflexive approach to identifying and classifying the socio-legal that eschews pre-existing benchmarks of what constitutes the field globally. In so doing, it makes the central argument that the meaning and evolution of “socio” in socio-legal is contingent on social and historical context. The article begins with a broad Pakistan-India …

Malaria remains a critical public health challenge in Africa, demanding innovative control strategies. This study introduces a novel approach using Microsporidia MB-infected mosquitoes and stochastic optimal control within a Lévy process framework to regulate mosquito release strategies. The primary goal is to optimize Microsporidia MB prevalence within mosquito populations to disrupt Plasmodium transmission to humans. By incorporating Lévy noise into the modeling process, we capture the inherent randomness of mosquito dynamics, improving intervention accuracy. The model, guided by the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation, optimizes release protocols while accounting for key environmental factors like seasonality and temperature fluctuations. Results show that intervention …

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a silent disease with indolent progression, but it is potentially lethal once its complication with acute aortic syndrome occurred. Hypertension, smoking and atherosclerosis had all along been recognized as the major risk factors for the etiology of TAA. However, with the advancement in genomic technology, we have gained a better understanding on the contribution of the hereditary components in the genetically triggered thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (GTAAD). From the literature, around 20% of patients with thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAAD) have a positive family history. Therefore, if these atrisk patients can be identified …

How Do Followers Experience Shared Leadership As A Lived Experience?Understanding The Relationality, Processes And Practices Informing Such Collaboration., Sybille Erika Schiffmann
Plymouth Business School Theses
How do followers experience shared leadership as a lived experience? Understanding the relationality, processes and practices informing such collaboration. Within shared leadership research culture, the aspiration is to explore “leadership as a dynamic interactive influence process”’ at the group level, supporting goal achievement (Pearce and Conger, 2003, P.1). However, the motivation of much research has focused on performance improvement, whereby discrete leadership variables are examined, using reductionist methods, to determine relevant linkages to team effectiveness (Denis et al., 2012. See also Fairhurst et.al, 2020). In expanding understanding of shared leadership from a follower perspective, enabling a fuller appreciation of how …

This study investigates a novel methodology for a coaxial disc stabilized burner with a central jet oil spray. It introduces multiple air injection jets within the burner gun's exit section, promoting earlier fuel vaporization and rapid fuel-air mixture formation in the premixing zone. This directly contributes to improved overall combustion efficiency and reduced exhaust emissions. The focus lies on identifying the optimal location for the air injection jets (fixed load, constant jet momentum, and angle) within the exiting premixing zone of the burner gun. In-flame measurements are conducted inside a cylindrical combustor at different air injection locations and varying excess …

We present in this paper a new type of self-reference functional integro-differential equation with a nonlocal initial condition. Also, we present a nonlocal problem of the functional integro-differential equation with the infinite point boundary condition for more generalization. An integral representation equivalent to the functional integro-differential equation is obtained to use the theorems needed for proving the existence, and uniqueness. Then we prove the continuous dependence of the solution on the nonlocal parameter and the initial data of the equation. To prove the existence of the solution of the equation we present the Schauder fixed point theorem for both finite …
