Frequent Use Of Contingency Management And Opioid Treatment Programs That Provide Treatment For More Than Only Opioid Use Disorder, Orrin D. Ware, Matthew D. Novak, Forrest Toegel Jan 2024

Frequent Use Of Contingency Management And Opioid Treatment Programs That Provide Treatment For More Than Only Opioid Use Disorder, Orrin D. Ware, Matthew D. Novak, Forrest Toegel

Journal Articles

Contingency management is an effective behavioral intervention for treating substance use disorders that provides patients with incentives for objective verification of completed targeted recovery behaviors including abstinence from substances, attending treatment, and medication adherence. Accredited/licensed opioid treatment programs provide effective, medications for opioid use disorder. This study evaluated the prevalence of frequent contingency management use among a national sample of opioid treatment programs in the U.S. (N= 672). A binary logistic regression model examined factors associated with providing contingency management, including state-level fatal overdoses, number of pharmacotherapies, outpatient treatment, facility ownership, and residential treatment. Most evaluated facilities provided contingency management …

Comparing The Predictive Capacity Of Allometric Models In Estimating Grass Biomass In A Desert Grassland, Adam T. Naito, Steven R. Archer, Philip Heilman Jan 2024

Comparing The Predictive Capacity Of Allometric Models In Estimating Grass Biomass In A Desert Grassland, Adam T. Naito, Steven R. Archer, Philip Heilman

Journal Articles

Allometric models provide a rapid, nondestructive means for estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) of perennial grass species. In the absence of site-specific models, allometric relationships developed at other sites at other times are often used. This implicitly assumes that size-biomass relationships are highly robust. In this study, we assess the comparability of allometric relationships developed at two points in time (2005 and 2015) on different soils on a Sonoran Desert savanna in southern Arizona. We used peak growing season field measurements to develop single-species and multispecies regression models using basal diameter and height to predict the current year's AGB for seven …

Strategic Planning In Higher Education: Perceptions Of Faculty And Administrators At Public Institutions., Brent Graves, Fritz J. Erickson Jan 2024

Strategic Planning In Higher Education: Perceptions Of Faculty And Administrators At Public Institutions., Brent Graves, Fritz J. Erickson

Journal Articles

Over the past several decades, strategic planning has become ubiquitous in higher education. Yet, there are varying perceptions of its overall value. Perceptions of value are critically important as they can influence the effectiveness and breadth of participation in the strategic planning process, and such participation is widely held to be critical for success. We investigated these issues using an on-line survey distributed to faculty, chairs, and deans at public colleges and universities in the United States. We found that, compared to both faculty and chairs, deans had a more positive assessment of whether the benefits of the process were …

The Harmonious Song Of A Moufang Quartet, J.D. Phillips Jan 2024

The Harmonious Song Of A Moufang Quartet, J.D. Phillips

Journal Articles

The variety of Moufang loops is axiomatized by any one of four well known (equivalent) identities. We prove that this axiomatic harmony holds in a broader setting by obtaining two alternate, generalized versions of the (traditional) definition of a Moufang loop using four “local” identities, each derived from one of the four “global” Moufang identities, one for loops, the other for magmas with the right or left inverse property.

Employability Skills Examined: Focus On Data Literacy, Jamie-Marie Miller

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings

Data surrounds us every day, both personally and professionally. However, many students lack critical skills to analyze it to make data-informed decisions. This piece examines how instructors, regardless of their discipline, can create classroom environments that foster quantitative reasoning of data and support data literacy in their students.

Uterine Rupture In The First Trimester: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature., Steve Mutiso, Felix Oindi, Debbie Mundia Jan 2024

Uterine Rupture In The First Trimester: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature., Steve Mutiso, Felix Oindi, Debbie Mundia

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: Uterine rupture is a rare complication that can occur in the frst trimester of pregnancy. It can lead to serious maternal morbidity or mortality, which is mostly due to catastrophic bleeding. First trimester uterine rupture is rare; hence, diagnosis can be challenging as it may be confused with other causes of early pregnancy bleeding such as an ectopic pregnancy. We present a case of frst trimester scar dehiscence and conduct a literature review of this rare condition.

Case presentation: A 39-year-old African patient with four previous hysterotomy scars presented with severe lower abdominal pain at 11 weeks of gestation. …

Dust-Driven Mechanism For Marine Particle Aggregation: Interactions Between Clay Minerals, Heterotrophic Bacteria And Organic Matter Influences Aggregation In Marine Systems, Vignesh Gokuladas Menon Jan 2024

Dust-Driven Mechanism For Marine Particle Aggregation: Interactions Between Clay Minerals, Heterotrophic Bacteria And Organic Matter Influences Aggregation In Marine Systems, Vignesh Gokuladas Menon

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Atmospheric dust deposition plays a crucial role in marine biogeochemical cycles, yet mechanisms underlying its impact on particle dynamics remain unclear. This study investigates the synergistic interactions between marine heterotrophic bacteria and clay minerals in seawater, focusing on their effect on Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) production and organoclay aggregation. Field experiments in the Gulf of Maine and laboratory roller tank studies were conducted using natural microbial communities and model heterotrophic bacterial strains (Alteromonas sp. EZ55, Marinobacter adhaerens HP15, and Sulfitobacter sp. NAS-14.1). Results demonstrate that clay exposure significantly enhances TEP production by bloom-associated heterotrophic bacteria, with increases up to …

Artificial Intelligence And Human Creativity: A Delicate Balance, Grace Bell

Comm-entary

This essay discusses the ways that virtues, as well as their meanings and their applications, are changing as technology develops. It also describes the debate among creatives and artists regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creative work, and the nuances that come with defining something as broad as 'creativity'. Artificial intelligence is new and frightening to many, and artists are unsure if this technology will make creative projects more accessible, or if it will take over human-designed creative projects entirely. Using Chat GPT as a tool and a creative partner, this essay investigates the ways that AI can …

The Countess Of Chester Hospital Whistle-Blower Case Study, Kaylie Efstratiou

Comm-entary

The following case examines whistle-blowing in the workplace and how it is treated in organizational culture, dealing with the varying ethical perspectives displayed when managerial staff are faced with a whistle-blower. In 2015, an alarming number of infants began to mysteriously pass away in the neonatal ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital. After a few staff members began to realize that one nurse, Lucy Letby, may have been a common denominator in the deaths, a report was made and brought to the attention of the unit manager. When nothing was done after several meetings, some of the staff took …
