Through The Lens Of Tiktok: A New Perspective To Improving Food And Nutrition Literacy In Adolescents, Devin Kathleen Ebeling-Hammond
Through The Lens Of Tiktok: A New Perspective To Improving Food And Nutrition Literacy In Adolescents, Devin Kathleen Ebeling-Hammond
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Understanding food, nutrition, and physical activity is essential for everyone, and is important to learn from a young age to foster healthy, lifelong habits. Research indicates that 50% of adolescents do not consume the right amount of fruit, vegetables, or protein, and often consume excessive amounts of fats and sugar. Coincidentally, type 2 diabetes and other non-communicable diseases are on the rise, which can be improved through modifiable health determinants. The purpose of this study is to provide insight into innovative ways to teach adolescents about food, nutrition, and the importance of physical activity. An exploratory pilot study was selected …
Explicitly Counting Subspaces Of Given Height Defined Over A Field Of Rational Functions, Kakoli Bhuyan
Explicitly Counting Subspaces Of Given Height Defined Over A Field Of Rational Functions, Kakoli Bhuyan
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
A height function measures the complexity of mathematical objects, usually points on some projective variety. There are previous results that estimate the number of subspaces of bounded height defined over number fields and function fields over a finite field. These results are asymptotic estimates as the height bound tends to infinity. In this dissertation we derive an explicit counting of the number of subspaces of given height defined over a field of rational functions.

Examining Project Flex: A Sport-Based Prison Program For Incarcerated Youth, Gabrielle Bennett
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
There is a growing global body of literature examining the experiences of adolescents in sport-based youth development programs. Conversely, the advantages of such programming are often contingent on intention, design, population, and environment. One often overlooked setting that serves a vital population benefiting from the integration of sport-based youth development programs, is juvenile justice facilities. Beyond adolescents, much literature remains to be explored in penal settings, particularly, the inception of sport-based prison programs that utilize an evidence-based curriculum and explicit approach to foster life skill development. Often overlooked are staff, administrators, and youth perspectives of sport-based youth development programs in …
The Association Between Parent Ses, Child Externalizing And Internalizing Behaviors, And Home-School Communication, Brianna Isabel Banks
The Association Between Parent Ses, Child Externalizing And Internalizing Behaviors, And Home-School Communication, Brianna Isabel Banks
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Existing literature has evidenced that parent involvement (PI) in education has a significant and positive association with child outcomes, including social-emotional, behavioral, and academic achievement. Much of the research, however, examines the associations between home-based and school-based PI constructs and their associations with student academic achievement outcomes. The present study adds to the PI literature by examining the longitudinal associations between parent factors (i.e., mean income-to-needs ratio from age birth to age 9 and highest maternal educational attainment at age 5) and the home-school communication PI construct (i.e., quality and quantity reported by teachers and primary caregivers) at age 9. …

Provisioning Digital Tools And Systems For Government Use [“Govtech”], Nina-Simone Edwards
Library Scholarship
The project’s second concept paper recommends a series of changes to the current policy landscape for govtech provisioning. The suggestions include rethinking the traditional “make vs. buy” dichotomy in public procurement, mandating interoperability and transparency of govtech tools and systems, and reenvisioning accountability requirements to avoid the problem of “waterfall” development.
To support these policy changes, the paper first recommends improved support and coordination for five important govtech-related functions. Next, it proposes some corresponding changes to institutional structure and organization. Finally, it emphasizes the need to bolster technical capacity within government by developing a pipeline of specialized, govtech-related training programs, …

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Educators aspire for learners to proficiently apply acquired knowledge across diverse contextual scenarios. Facilitating knowledge transfer involves employing varied methodologies in the construction of instructional materials. Regrettably, extant research lacks a comprehensive examination of the efficacy of these methodologies in specific applications. Drawing upon cognitive psychology principles, this research delineates three representations of instructional materials conducive to knowledge transfer: the amalgamation of conceptual content and digital applications, the integration of conceptual content with situational queries, and the fusion of two situational queries. Subsequently, a cohort comprising 63 third-grade students undergoes experimentation to discern the differential impacts of the aforementioned instructional …

Dna Methylation In Aging And Alzheimer's Disease, Raymond Cheng, Jingmin Shu, Hai Chen, Ming Li, Xiaodong Cheng, Li Liu
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
DNA methylation undergoes significant changes with age. These alterations play a pivotal role in the development of age-related diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent advancements in DNA methylome profiling have revealed global hypomethylation patterns, particularly within repetitive elements, as well as gene-specific changes that are associated with neurodegeneration. Age-related alterations in DNA methylation have been implicated in the disruption of key cellular processes, such as inflammation and proteostasis, both central to AD pathology. However, several challenges persist in this field. One major issue is the inconsistency of findings across different brain regions and tissue types, which complicates result interpretation. Furthermore, …

A Simple And Rapid In Vitro Assay For Identification Of Direct Inhibitors Of O6-Methylguanine-Dna Methyltransferase, Vahid Khalaj, Solmaz Aghaamiri, Sukhen C Ghosh, Servando Hernandez Vargas, Majid Momeny, Ali Azhdarinia
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
O6-Methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is a DNA repair enzyme that is overexpressed in certain tumors and is associated with resistance to the DNA alkylating agent temozolomide. MGMT inhibitors show potential in combating temozolomide resistance, but current assays for MGMT enzyme activity and inhibition, primarily oligonucleotide-based and fluorescent probe-based, are laborious and costly. The clinical relevance of temozolomide therapy calls for more convenient methodologies to study MGMT inhibition. Here, we extended the application of SNAP-Capture magnetic beads to develop a novel MGMT inhibition assay that demonstrated efficacy not only with known MGMT inhibitors, but also with the aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitor, disulfiram. The …

Fetal Abdominal Obesity In Women With One Value Abnormality On Diagnostic Test For Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Wonjin Kim, Soo Kyung Park, Yoo Lee Kim
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Previous studies have shown that fetal abdominal obesity (FAO) was already observed at the time of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) diagnosis and persisted until delivery despite management in older and/or obese women. In this study, we investigated whether fetuses of women with milder hyperglycemia than GDM have accelerated abdominal growth, leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 7,569 singleton pregnant women who were universally screened using a 50-g glucose challenge test (GCT) and underwent a 3-h 100-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) if GCT result was ≥140mg/dL. GDM, one value abnormality (OVA), and normal glucose …

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
In July 1936, Spain descended into chaos and civil war. Fascists in the military, Catholic Church, and aristocracy rebelled against a government elected to reform centuries old power structures. The United States reacted in surprise and joined France and Britain, staunchly refusing to be involved. For six months, the Department of State impeded attempts to material assist the Spanish government, until Congress passed an updated neutrality law prohibiting trade with Spain or the rebels. Congress again renewed and updated the law a year later. Yet in spring of 1939, at the end of the war, Franklin D. Roosevelt told his …

The maturation of forebrain dopamine circuitry occurs over multiple developmental periods, extending from early postnatal life until adulthood, with the precise timing of maturation defined by the target region. We recently demonstrated in the adult mouse brain that axon terminals arising from midbrain dopamine neurons innervate the anterior corpus callosum and that oligodendrocyte lineage cells in this white matter tract express dopamine receptor transcripts. Whether corpus callosal dopamine circuitry undergoes maturational changes between early adolescence and adulthood is unknown but may be relevant to understanding the dramatic micro- and macro-anatomical changes that occur in the corpus callosum of multiple species …
