Effects Of Flushing Of Dental Waterlines In Portable Dental Units On Water Quality Management, Hiroshi Egusa, Kunihiro Fushimi, Jun Watanabe, Masahiro Yamada, Jumpei Washio, Nobuhiro Takahashi

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Daily flushing of dental unit waterlines is important for infection control. However, the effect of flushing on water quality management in portable dental units (PDUs) for mobile dental treatments remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the factors affecting the effectiveness of PDU flushing. Materials and methods Free residual chlorine concentration (FRCC) and heterotrophic plate counts (HPCs) in handpiece discharge water were evaluated as water quality indicators to determine the effectiveness of flushing PDUs, considering flushing duration, periods of PDU use, FRCC in the water used, pre-water drainage in water tanks and waterlines, and season. The …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Dysbiosis of oral microbiota has been reported in late stage of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection with cirrhosis. CHB is characterized by the constant virus-induced liver injury which may lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, some patients show normal liver function without antiviral treatment, associating with favourable prognosis. The oral microbiota composition and oral health status in these patients is unidentified. Materials and methods The study focuses on the composition of oral microbiota and oral health status in individuals with CHB and HBV vaccinees as controls. The CHB patients were hepatitis B 'e' antigen (HBeAg)-negative, …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Many designs of static computer-assisted implant surgery (sCAIS) are available for clinician to achieve proper implant position. However, there were not any studies that approached the design alone to evaluate whether sleeve-in-sleeve or sleeve-on-drill design provided most accuracy implant position. The purpose of this study was to investigate the precision of implant placement with sleeve-in-sleeve and sleeve-on-drill static computer assisted implant surgery (sCAIS) designs. Materials and methods Thirty-two models were fabricated simulating a patient with bilateral missing first premolar. Eight models (sixteen implants) were assigned in each group: Group A, B and C represented sleeve-in-sleeve design with 2, …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose High gold (Au) alloys have many advantages, such as good mechanical properties and stable chemical properties for dental restoration. The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the effect of zirconia (ZrO2)-magnesia (MgO)-based investment combined with an argon arc vacuum pressure (Ar-arc VP) casting process on the recasting of high Au alloys. Materials and methods The recasting Au alloys were compared between the control group of conventional SiO2-based investment/horizontal centrifugal (HC) casting and the experimental group of ZrO2–MgO-based investment/Ar-arc VP die casting. The first-generation castings were defined as being made from purchased Au alloys and the second-generation castings …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract The shift towards virtual assessment in dental education represents a significant advancement over traditional evaluation methods, offering new opportunities for assessing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This review examines the use of virtual assessment tools within the context of dental education. A narrative literature review was conducted, analyzing studies published between 2000 and 2024, sourced from PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase. From the initial search, 13 studies were selected for qualitative synthesis. The results indicate that virtual assessments, facilitated by technologies such as computer-based simulations and remote objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), have enhanced the accuracy and …

Investigation Of The Cushioning Mechanism Of A Novel Dental Implant System With Composite Hydrogel, Chih-Wen Chi, Tze-Wen Chung, Yi-Sheng Wu, Weng-Pin Chen, Chun-Pin Lin

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Dental implants can restore both function and aesthetics in edentulous areas. However, the absence of cushioning mechanical behavior in implants may limit their clinical performance and reduce the long-term survival rates. This study aimed to establish an implant cushion mechanism that mimicked the natural periodontal ligament, utilizing the properties of composite hydrogels. Materials and methods In this study, we synthesized two composite hydrogels (HS and HSP groups) using hyaluronic acid (HA) and silk fibroin. We conducted static-constrained compression, creep, and porosity tests to assess the physical properties of these composite hydrogels. Finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Studies have demonstrated a relation between hypercholesterolemia and development of apical periodontitis (AP), but the underlying mechanism is uncertain. 27-hydroxycholesterol (27HC), produced by cytochrome P450 27A1 (CYP27A1)-catalyzed hydroxylation of cholesterol, is known to possess pro-inflammatory activity. Felodipine is an anti-hypertensive agent able to inhibit CYP27A1. The study aimed to examine the inflammatory response of macrophages to 27HC and the relation between 27HC accumulation and progression of experimental AP. The therapeutic effect of felodipine was also evaluated. Materials and methods J774 murine macrophages were used. Expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and C–C motif chemokine ligand 20 (CCL20) were examined by …

Abstract Background/purpose Domiciliary dental care (DDC) is essential for maintaining oral health in disabled and homebound patients who face barriers to accessing dental services. With Taiwan nearing super-aged society status, the demand for DDC is rising. However, comprehensive data on DDC availability and distribution across Taiwan are lacking. Hence, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the distribution of DDC across Taiwan's districts from 2018 to 2023, and to analyze the estimated ratios of disabled individuals per healthcare provider in each district. Materials and methods Data on DDC-providing hospitals and dental clinics from these years were obtained from …

Riboflavin-Ultraviolet-A Collagen Crosslinking Treatments In Improving Dentin Bonding And Resistance To Enzymatic Digestion, Shu Fen Chuang, Yung-Show Chiang, Ping-Ju Chen, Chun-Chan Ting, Yuh-Ling Chen

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose The efficacy of riboflavin-ultraviolet-A (RF-UVA) treatment in crosslinking collagen and improving dentin bonding has been proven. However, biodegradation of the hybrid layer may compromise the bonding. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different RF-UVA treatments regarding their ability to preserve dentin bonding from enzymatic digestion. Materials and methods Collagen subjected to different RF (0.1 %, 1 %)-UVA (1, 2, 5 min) treatments and 5 % glutaraldehyde (GA), without or with enzymatic digestion, were examined by gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Twenty-five teeth with exposed dentin were primed with one of three RF-UVA treatments (0.1 %RF/1-minUVA, 0.1 %RF/2-minUVA, and …
