Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose The handheld nonthermal plasma (HNP) treatment may alter the surface properties, bone metabolism, and inflammatory reactions of polyaryletherketone (PAEK) dental implant materials. This study tested whether the HNP treatment might increase the biocompatibility, surface hydrophilicity, surface free energies (SFEs), and the cell adhesion and mineralization capability of PAEK materials. Materials and methods Disk-shaped samples of titanium (Ti), zirconia (Zr), polyetheretherketone (PEEK [PE]), and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK [PK]) were subjected to HNP treatment and termed as TiPL, ZrPL, PEPL, and PKPL, respectively. Water-surface reactions were examined using a goniometer. MG-63 cells were cultured on all samples to assess the cell …

Incremental Net Benefit Of Extending Human Papillomavirus Vaccine To Boys In Oropharyngeal Cancer Burden: Meta-Analysis Of Cost-Effectiveness Studies, Adikara Pagan Pratama, Su-Feng Chen, Shih-Chieh Liao, Wei-Chia Su, Jian-Hong Yu

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is increasing worldwide. HPV vaccines have shown efficacy in preventing diseases in both males and females. Therefore, there is a need to develop cost-effective strategies for HPV vaccines to prevent HPV-related OPC. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate cost-effectiveness using the global mean of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios compared to the willingness-to-pay threshold and incremental net benefits (INBs) of HPV vaccination strategies between boys’ extension vaccine and girls only. These recommendations will be useful for countries that have not implemented universal HPV vaccines in national programs, such as Taiwan. Materials and …

Influence Of Handheld Nonthermal Plasma On Shear Bond Strength Of Polyaryletherketone To Resin-Matrix Cement, Tzu-Yu Peng, Huei-Yu Huang, Szu-Yu Lai, Fu-Ting Lee, Yang-Che Wu, Sheng-Wei Feng, Hiroki Nikawa

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Challenges exist regarding the bonding efficiency of polyaryletherketone (PAEK), a high-performance thermoplastic, attributed to its chemical inertness and hydrophobic surface, hindering effective bonding with resin-matrix cement. This research explored the impact of handheld nonthermal plasma (HNP), under varying operational parameters, on PAEK surface wettability and changes in bonding performance with cement. Materials and methods Three types of disc-shaped PEAK specimens were prepared, with surface treatments categorized as grinding, airborne-particle abrasion (APB), and HNP. Surface wettability was analyzed using a contact angle analyzer (n = 10). Specimens were bonded with resin cement and subjected to artificial aging tests: distilled …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background /purpose In cases where oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) invades the jawbone, clinicians frequently observe abnormal attenuation on computed tomography (CT) and pathologic signal intensity (SI) on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the affected underlying bone marrow. This study introduced a concept of “underlying bone change” to examine its association with clinicopathological features and prognosis of OSCC, as well as its correlation with medullary invasion. Materials and methods We enrolled 93 consecutive patients diagnosed with OSCC, who underwent mandibulectomy between 2010 and 2016. CT and MR images, along with electronic medical records, were reviewed to evaluate correlations between …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), characterized by excessive collagen deposition by myofibroblasts, is often linked to Areca nuts consumption. Probiotics consumption has shown protective effects against fibrotic diseases, and recently, their metabolic byproducts, known as postbiotics, have demonstrated superior advantages over probiotics. However, studies on the therapeutic impact of postbiotics on OSF have been scarce. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of PostBio GK4, a postbiotic derived from Lactobacillus pentosus GK4 , on OSF and explore its underlying mechanisms. Materials and methods The cytotoxicity of GK4 in normal buccal mucosal fibroblasts (BMFs) and fibrotic BMFs (fBMFs) were …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Bone morphogenetic protein-9 (BMP-9) has demonstrated multiple advantages in promoting osteogenesis. Our previous findings have indicated that the use of an absorbable collagen membrane (ACM) as a carrier for growth factors is effective in stimulating bone regeneration. The objective of this study was to assess the synergistic impact of BMP-9 incorporated into ACM (ACM/BMP-9) on bone formation within rat mandibular bone defects. Materials and methods Circular bone defects of critical size were surgically induced on both sides of the rat mandibular bone, with subsequent random allocation into distinct groups: control, ACM alone, and ACM loaded with low (0.5 …

Cementocyte-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Regulate Osteoclastogenesis And Osteoblastogenesis, Eiji Nemoto, Jiajun Li, Yukihiko Sakisaka, Kentaro Maruyama, Shigeki Suzuki, Kaixin Xiong, Hiroyuki Tada, Taichi Tenkumo, Satoru Yamada

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Cementum shares many properties with bone; however, in contrast to bone, it is not innervated or vascularized and has a limited capacity for remodeling. Osteocytes located in the lacunae-canalicular system of bone tissue play a central role in bone remodeling by communicating with osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Although cementocytes are present in cellular cementum and are morphologically similar to osteocytes, it remains unclear whether they are involved in the dynamic functional regulation of metabolism in cementum. The present study focused on the extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by cementocytes and examined their effects on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Materials and methods …

Orthodontic Tension Promotes Cementoblast Mineralization By Regulating Autophagy, Weiran Li, Yi Zhao, Yuhui Yang, Hao Liu, Jiayi Wang, Yiping Huang

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose External root resorption is a main side effect of orthodontic treatment and is more likely to occur on the pression side than the tension side. To explore the potential protective mechanisms on the tension side, this study investigated the influence of mechanical tension on cementoblast mineralization and elucidated the role of autophagy in mediating this process. Materials and methods Mechanical tension was applied to cementoblasts using iStrain. The expression of mineralization-related and autophagy-related markers was detected by qRT-PCR, Western blot analysis, and immunofluorescence staining. RNA sequencing identified key regulators. Immunohistochemical staining assessed related markers expression in in vivo …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Oral pathologies in ancient human remains provide a unique glimpse into the lifestyles, health, and societal norms of past civilizations, including ancient Egypt. However, comprehensive paleo-odontological studies accounting for temporal and sociodemographic variations remain scarce. We address this gap by analyzing oral pathologies in the remains of 68 and 57 adult individuals, respectively, unearthed from two adjacent yet temporally and socioeconomically diverse burial sites, representing the XIth dynasty (2160–1985 BCE) and the XXVth-XXVIth dynasties (948–525 BCE), at Luxor's Thutmose III Funerary Temple. Materials and methods We examined dental wear, carious and periapical lesions, periodontal disease, and temporomandibular joint …
