Mapping Gender And Territory: The Continent Allegories On European World Maps From The Late Middle Ages To The Renaissance Until The Early Enlightenment, Katharina Eva Oehmichen Nov 2024

Mapping Gender And Territory: The Continent Allegories On European World Maps From The Late Middle Ages To The Renaissance Until The Early Enlightenment, Katharina Eva Oehmichen

Comparative Woman

The four-part set of female continent allegories, which originated in the early Renaissance, was born out of a European need for a new vehicle of thought that served the functions of representing imperial expansion and the superiority of Western science and civilization, while gratifying the curiosity of the readers about newly discovered lands at the same time. The shift from the Christian symbolic tradition of the representation of the continents on world maps mirrored the shift in Western perception and knowledge of the world and Europe’s position in it. Apart from geo-political and imperial agendas that might have favored a …

Texts, Affects And Teenagers: (Im)Material Transmissions Across France And Ireland, Taylor Still

Journal of Franco-Irish Studies

This article examines the circulation of texts between people, spaces and cultural perspectives, addressing disparate mediums from virtual transmission, including social media channels; to physical or material transmission in public space(s). Central to the internationalised transmission of texts, the recent emergence and popularity of channels such as TikTok and Instagram have allowed for more innovative, creative and collaborative literary practices. Focusing on young publics in particular, we interrogate how “viral” transmissive practices can work to re-produce, re-appropriate, and re-interpret literary texts. This article also focuses on the affective experience of these transmissive textual practices, and how the (non-)human interactions can …

Schwarzenbach’S Dark End Of The Street In Washington, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, Padraig Rooney , Translator Nov 2024

Schwarzenbach’S Dark End Of The Street In Washington, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, Padraig Rooney , Translator

Swiss American Historical Society Review

First published in National-Zeitung, on November 11, 1936.

Annemarie Schwarzenbach wrote this piece about Washington, D.C. shortly after her arrival in the city in late August 1936. She stayed on Waterside Drive at the home of Elizabeth Washburn Wright, the widow of Dr. Hamilton Wright, a specialist in tropical medicine but also a government-appointed anti-drug crusader in the battle against Chinese opium.

As a morphine addict, Annemarie was hiding in plain sight. In September, with their daughter, Barbara Hamilton Wright (‘Baa’), Annemarie travelled a thousand miles north to Livingston Falls in Maine, homestead of the illustrious Washburn family to …

Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson Nov 2024

Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This chapter argues that the terms “Latinx” and “latinidad” are messy signifiers that allow us to contend with Latinx’s complicated racial history. While the term Latinx continues to be controversial, and scholars such as Tatiana Flores have examined the case for cancelling latinidad, “Racing Latinidad” points to how latinidad can signify particular political commitments and affinities. Through readings of Manuel Muñoz’s What You See in the Dark (2011) and Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa’s Daughters of the Stone (2009), this chapter illuminates how excavating racial histories outside the logic of the state is a way to summon a politics to imagine a people. …

Maximise Your Creativity: Important Qualities To Help Expediate A Career In Electronic Music & Creative Arts, Trenton Bice

Postgraduate

The creative arts industries are experiencing a shift as they continue to evolve into the digital age of the 21st century and online consumption. Opportunities across many creative disciplines have expanded as the ability to network and learn online has become more accepted and commonplace. This has been prevalent in the electronic dance music industry, as the development of industry software and equipment become more affordable, but with this also comes a greater depth of talent and competition.

Whilst many revenue streams to the core of the music industry still exist, such as contracts with record labels, touring/performing live and …

Arts As A Driver Of Agility: A Mixed-Method Inquiry, M. Janani, V. Vijayalakshmi Nov 2024

Arts As A Driver Of Agility: A Mixed-Method Inquiry, M. Janani, V. Vijayalakshmi

Open Access archive

The Fifth Industrial Revolution focuses on building sustainability by balancing human factors (such as resilience and well-being) and technological innovations. This era of evolving, diverse, and turbulent business environments demands an agile workforce. However, scholars note a deficit in initiatives to boost agility due to the lack of evidence-based agility training practices. This study aims to design and test novel training using ‘arts’ to boost employee agility. An Intermodal Arts-Based Intervention (IABI) integrating visual arts, music, movement, and theatre was designed for this purpose. We employed a mixed-method inquiry in two stages to test its effect. Study 1, a quasi-experimental …

Is The Population Of The Critically Endangered White-Bellied Heron Declining In Namdapha Tiger Reserve, India?, Rohan K. Menzies, Kulbhushansingh R. Surya Wanshi, Rohit Naniwadekar

Open Access archive

The Critically Endangered white-bellied heron Ardea insignis is a large-bodied, range-restricted, piscivorous bird of the Himalayan mountains. With fewer than 60 individuals remaining globally, regular monitoring is required for this rare species. We present the results of surveys during 2017 and 2023-2024 in Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh, India. The encounter rate of white-bellied herons in 2017 was 0.55 individuals per km of river, but we did not detect the bird during intensive surveys in the same location during 2023-2024. The surveyed area within the Reserve was once a stronghold for the species, but its population appears to be declining. …

Protection In A Virtual Reality: The Dire Need For Trademark And Copyright Law Expansion To Encompass Digital Content Within The Metaverse, Amber N. Roibu

Touro Law Review

The Metaverse has gained much popularity in recent years, leaving some people with a feeling of uncertainty, but all the while intriguing many others. The multifaceted interactions and activities that take place within the Metaverse have made it a virtual world fertile for not only creative expression but also infringement of existing trademark and copyright protected works. Hand-in-hand with the development of the Metaverse has come the fast-growing interest in buying and selling virtual goods, properties, and non-fungible tokens. To preserve their reputation, avoid costly litigation, and ultimately uphold the exclusive rights allotted to them as intellectual property owners, trademark …

School Administrators’ Perspectives On Dyslexia And Transformational Leadership And Implications For Teacher Placement, Christina M. Walker Nov 2024

School Administrators’ Perspectives On Dyslexia And Transformational Leadership And Implications For Teacher Placement, Christina M. Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on the perceptions of secondary-level administrators about dyslexia instruction and their decision-making process in teacher placement within a Texas school district. Using transformative leadership theory, the researcher’s aim was to address the instructional needs of students with dyslexia and help catalyze educational change. The research involved a qualitative descriptive approach to explore administrators’ perspectives and practices. Findings revealed that dyslexia affects approximately 15%–20% of the U.S. population. Despite intellectual capabilities, individuals with dyslexia face persistent struggles in reading and writing because of neurobiological differences. The specific problem addressed was the lack of understanding among school administrators about …
