The Altered Landscape As Heterotopia, Shane Hulbert, Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou
The Altered Landscape As Heterotopia, Shane Hulbert, Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou
All Works
This paper considers the contemporary photographic practices of the authors, aligning their conceptual ideas and working methodology with notions of heterotopia. It argues for a positioning within contemporary altered landscape photography that considers place as a heterotopia, a networked system or process that modifies and makes an alternative ‘territory’. In dialogue with a range of relevant authors and artists, the paper contextualises heterotopia and altered landscape spaces as layers of both cultural and ecological intervention. It asserts that an artist in a state of mobility, transit and movement, can effectively employ notions of heterotopia to inform a creative photographic practice. …

More Than Simple Plagiarism: Ligotti, Pizzolatto, And True Detective’S Terrestrial Horror, Jonathan Elmore
More Than Simple Plagiarism: Ligotti, Pizzolatto, And True Detective’S Terrestrial Horror, Jonathan Elmore
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Of course, True Detective is neither a philosopher’s bedtime story nor supernatural horror, and yet there remains a productive affinity between Ligotti’s work and the HBO series. Where Ligotti provides substantial portions of the hallmark character’s identity and dialogue, True Detective puts Ligotti’s thought experiment to far more practical uses than does Ligotti himself. By intertwining hurricanes and flooding alongside industry and pollution into the background and negative space of the setting, the series implicates the urgent material reality of climate change and environmental collapse into the setting: “all of this is going to be under water in thirty years” …
Genomics Insights Into Anti-Platelets Therapy: Unraveling Of Variants And The Implementation Of Clopidogrel-Guided Therapy In The United Arab Emirates, Lubna Qasem Khasawneh
Genomics Insights Into Anti-Platelets Therapy: Unraveling Of Variants And The Implementation Of Clopidogrel-Guided Therapy In The United Arab Emirates, Lubna Qasem Khasawneh
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Anti-platelet therapy is a cornerstone in the management of cardiovascular diseases such as acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and stroke. These medications are essential for reducing the risk of thrombotic events by preventing platelet aggregation. However, variations in cardiovascular pharmacogenes can significantly impact the metabolism, efficacy, and safety of anti-platelet therapies, making personalized medicine increasingly important for optimizing treatment outcomes. Pharmacogenomic testing has emerged as a crucial tool in tailoring anti-platelet therapy, particularly for patients with subtherapeutic responses due to genetic factors. While extensive research has been conducted globally to identify and study the effect of the pharmacogenomic variants that influence …

“If You Want To Be The Man, You’Ve Got To Beat The Man”: Masculinity And The Rise Of Professional Wrestling In The 1990s, Marc A. Ouellette
“If You Want To Be The Man, You’Ve Got To Beat The Man”: Masculinity And The Rise Of Professional Wrestling In The 1990s, Marc A. Ouellette
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
This paper traces the relationship between the shifting representations of masculinity in professional wrestling programs of the 1990s and the contemporaneous shifts in conceptions of masculinity, examining the ways each of these shifts impacted the other. Most important among these was a growing sense that the biggest enemy in wrestling and in day-to-day life is one’s boss. Moreover, the corporate corruption theme continues to underscore the WWE's on-screen and off-screen coverage, well into the second decade of the twenty-first century. Thus, the paper provides a template for considering a widely consumed popular cultural form in ways that challenge the determinism …

“High Culture As Entertainment”: Hybrid Reading Practices In A Live Book Club, Magnus Persson
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
The Bushwick Book Club (BBC) is a live book club in which invited pop musicians perform musical interpretations of a predetermined literary work in a nightclub environment. What can a typical BBC show, with its strong emphasis on popular music and performance, teach readers about the uses of literature? This case study will investigate which reading practices are at work and in what ways they challenge traditional ideas of the forms, functions, and values of reading. Another important aspect concerns how the borders between high and popular culture, and between the printed word and other media are renegotiated. Based on …

A Pedagogical Journey: Albuquerque 2015, Laurence Raw
A Pedagogical Journey: Albuquerque 2015, Laurence Raw
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
The subject of pedagogy and popular culture has assumed increasing significance in academic circles, especially since the publication of Phil Benson’s and Alice Chik’s anthology Popular Culture, Pedagogy and Teacher Education (2014), a series of interventions discussing how popular culture can be implemented in a variety of teaching situations across the globe. The book offers valuable insights into how popular culture can inspire learners through materials drawn from everyday life but tends to avoid essential questions such as what constitutes popular cultural material (and how it differs from other textual forms) and what learning outcomes might be accomplished through its …

Strategies Some Female Musician Entrepreneurs Use To Increase Profitability And Sustain Success Without An Additional Source Of Income, Kascie Amanda Page
Strategies Some Female Musician Entrepreneurs Use To Increase Profitability And Sustain Success Without An Additional Source Of Income, Kascie Amanda Page
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Without a solid understanding of marketing, booking, and branding strategies, female musician entrepreneurs may struggle to achieve profitability. Developing these strategies is crucial to mitigate risks that could jeopardize the sustainability and success of their independent businesses. Grounded in the theory of constraints the purpose of this pragmatic inquiry was to explore the strategies some female musician entrepreneurs used to become profitable without an additional source of income. The participants were five independent artists within the Southeast region of the United States who performed and published original music during the last 5 years. Data was collected from interviews. Three themes …

Reflection: The Twenty-Line Trap? Shakespeare Enacted By Young Women, Shannon Reed
Reflection: The Twenty-Line Trap? Shakespeare Enacted By Young Women, Shannon Reed
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Professional actors assemble a toolkit of monologues with an obligatory “Shakespearean monologue” of around 20 lines. But female actors are at a disadvantage, with less than 150 women in a repertoire of over 1,100 characters in Shakespeare’s 37 or more plays. Young female actors (18-22 years old) are even more at a loss, if the powerful and complex older female roles are removed, leaving only a few dozen appropriate speeches. What effect does this limited canon have on such actors? Here, I reflect upon my own participant observer experience as a young woman actor, who received the bulk of my …
