Building Lasting Connections In A Temporary Setting: First-Year Residential Students' Experiences At A Primarily Nonresidential Institution, Pamela Ghigliotti Mihalik
Building Lasting Connections In A Temporary Setting: First-Year Residential Students' Experiences At A Primarily Nonresidential Institution, Pamela Ghigliotti Mihalik
Theses & Dissertations
Living on campus during college offers students a unique opportunity to adjust to their new environment. As they navigate this transitional phase, first-year students encounter both new opportunities and challenges that help them forge connections within their community. The type of institution, including the number of students residing on campus, can significantly influence their overall college experience and expectations. This phenomenological study examined the experiences of seven first-year students residing at a primarily nonresidential institution. Through semi-structured interviews and photo journals, the research aimed to understand how these residential students connected with their campus and what factors influenced their experiences. …

Championing Food Studies Within The Field Of Irish Studies: A Serendipitous Autoethnographic Journey, Mairtin Macconiomaire
Championing Food Studies Within The Field Of Irish Studies: A Serendipitous Autoethnographic Journey, Mairtin Macconiomaire
Doctoral
Food permeates every aspect of life and society, from birth to death—from the new-born’s first suckle to the food traditions associated with Irish wakes and funerals. Essential for survival, it has historically proven academically elusive, hidden in plain sight. Entangled with the domestic and the feminine, it was traditionally regarded as too mundane and too quotidian for consideration. Depending on how you define it, Irish Studies has somewhere between 50 and 100 years of history as an academic discipline. Food Studies is a more recent academic phenomenon, which has been steadily growing internationally since last decade of the twentieth century. …
Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Maude Valérie White (1866-1937) was an English composer during the Victorian Era. Her main output was in the genre of art song, of which she wrote more than two hundred during her life. Her music was very popular at the height of her career around 1880-1890, but fell out of favor with the general public in line with the general reaction against Victorian art and ideals. This written document focuses on the life of Maude Valérie White contextualized within the ideals of Victorian womanhood. It will explore the development of her musical style through eight song analyses: The Devout Lover, …
Fabrication And Evaluation Of Multicomponent Biomimetic Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Engineering, Mozan Osman Hassan
Fabrication And Evaluation Of Multicomponent Biomimetic Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Engineering, Mozan Osman Hassan
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Bones have an inherent ability to remodel, but critical-size defects can hinder regeneration, leading to delayed healing or non-union fractures. Traditional bone grafts have limitations, such as donor site morbidity and immune rejection, driving the need for synthetic bone substitutes. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) addresses this by developing biomimetic scaffolds that replicate bone properties. This research aimed to fabricate composite scaffolds from strontium (Sr) and zinc (Zn) doped nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp), collagen, and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymer. Different doping percentages of Sr/Zn (1%, 2.5%, 4%) were used to fabricate the scaffolds using supercritical CO2 (ScCO2) and electrospinning techniques. Scaffolds were then analyzed …

Raas Festival: A Catalyst For Tourism Development In Assam, India, Madhuchhanda Das Gupta Dr., Chandana Bhattacharjee Dr., Rosemary Debbarma
Journal of Tourism Insights
Traditionally religious practices have been central to any celebration and have greatly influenced the shaping of the cultural identity of any society. With time, these celebrations have transitioned into mega festivals with larger participation from within and outside the community. Through the display of songs, dances, and other art forms, these festivals are upholding and preserving the ethnic identity and culture of the community. They are not only sources of relaxation and entertainment, but also provide visitors with unique cultural experience. By attracting tourists, festivals exert strong influence on the local economy, thereby, driving growth and development. The paper attempts …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
Surgical site infections (SSI) result in increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged recovery, longer hospital length of stay for medication or possible additional surgeries, and escalated health care costs. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to compare SSI rates and overall skin flora burden between those using chlorhexidine (CHG) cloths versus soap and water preoperatively in the adult spine surgery population.
Methods
Subjects were randomized preoperatively to use 2% CHG cloths versus soap and water the night before and morning of surgery prior to the operation. A skin culture was obtained at enrollment prior to any cleansing, again …
Public-Private Partnerships In Tourism Development: An Analysis Of The Kuwait Experience, Obaid Al Otaibi
Public-Private Partnerships In Tourism Development: An Analysis Of The Kuwait Experience, Obaid Al Otaibi
The Geographical Bulletin
Tourism and recreation has become one of the important and influential sectors in most of the modern economies. This sector has been accepted as one of the alternative sources of national income, employment, and foreign exchange. The state of Kuwait has many potentialities in tourism and recreation, and exploitation of this leads to more diversification of the economy besides augmenting its contribution to the GDP. Because Kuwait is an import oriented economy, it requires hard currencies (foreign exchange) to meet the import cost as well as to maintain stability in the international market. To compensate for the revenue fall stemmed …

Speaking of Pierre Bourdieu, John Lechte says, “Given the complexity that characterizes Bourdieu’s work, there is always a risk of misunderstanding him. It is therefore necessary to read his complete works with care – the same care that he himself took with his writings”. We begin with this quote to emphasize that the foundations of knowledge production, when approached from a sociological perspective, require studying complex conditions and determinants. These are a prerequisite for learning, recognition and research. Without them, learning can be misunderstood or misinterpreted, especially as knowledge production always takes place in a complex and complicated world that …

Writing To Learn: Creative Ld Perspectives For Learning Developers And Students, Sandra Abegglen, Carina Buckley, Tom Burns, Sandra Sinfield, Alicja Syska
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Academic writing is a contested area, even more so in times of large language models and artificial intelligence (AI). This writing is tricky to navigate and master especially for newcomers – staff and students. Learning Developers almost uniquely play with writing as a practice of emergence and discovery. Academic writing is a process: we write to become academic. Students write to join their epistemic communities, and Learning Developers write to give birth to an emergent field.Drawing on recent work by Syska and Buckley (2022) and Abegglen, Burns and Sinfield (2022; 2023), we argue that academic writing is an initiation into …

The Necessary Opportunism Of The Common Law First Amendment, Chris Stangl
The Necessary Opportunism Of The Common Law First Amendment, Chris Stangl
Tennessee Journal of Law and Policy
The First Amendment historically has been interpreted to provide greater and greater protection to more and more forms of expression. The notion of an originalist First Amendment has never commanded a majority of the Supreme Court and is unlikely to do so. Instead the development of the First Amendment has followed a common law trajectory. As the reach of its protections expands, so to do its attractiveness for arguments that may be more accurately located elsewhere in the Constitution's text. Such opportunism is a predictable, even necessary consequence of the First Amendment's common law development, and the Supreme Court tacitly …

The environment being studied at present is a Level II trauma center, with academic/university affiliation. The presentation's main focusis on efficiency. The poster presentation would define lateness in regard to first-case starts. It would focus on …
