The Contingencies Of Chinese Diasporic Identities In Charlson Ong’S Speculative Fiction, Joseph Ching Velasco

Kritika Kultura

Charlson Ong’s award-winning novel An Embarrassment of Riches (2000) creatively narrates the history of the Chinese diaspora as an overdetermined event in the Southeast Asian Region. The novel explores the politics of belonging, displacement, identity, and territory through a/n (re)imagined nation built primarily on Philippine historical and cultural contingencies. This essay seeks to explore the junctures and vicissitudes of the Chinese diaspora in the region through the following questions: How is hybridity manifested by selected characters and other cultural elements in the narrative? Second, how do the perceptions of homeland, marked by ambivalence and contradiction, operate in the narrative? And …

Hallyu And The Traditional Cultural Genes Of Korea, Ki-Duk Kim, Sang-Joon Bae Dec 2024

Hallyu And The Traditional Cultural Genes Of Korea, Ki-Duk Kim, Sang-Joon Bae

Kritika Kultura

Since the year 2000, South Korea has been the propagator of the Hallyu (Korean Wave) that has spread across the world, demonstrating the country’s cultural potential. The subject of Hallyu can be approached from several perspectives, first by identifying its origins, current status, and trends by genre; by looking at its effects and the measures that can sustain the Hallyu phenomenon; and also by examining Hallyu trends by country. This paper analyzes Korea’s traditional cultural genes that affected the creation and spread of Hallyu from a humanistic point of view. The three factors for this analysis are: i) community and …

K-Pop Strategy Seen From The Viewpoint Of Cultural Hybridity And The Tradition Of The Gwangdae, Hee-Chul Sim, Soel-Ah Kim, Byung-Min Lee Dec 2024

K-Pop Strategy Seen From The Viewpoint Of Cultural Hybridity And The Tradition Of The Gwangdae, Hee-Chul Sim, Soel-Ah Kim, Byung-Min Lee

Kritika Kultura

Hallyu (the Korean wave) is an intriguing phenomenon originating from Korea and refers to the current impact of products of South Korean popular culture (especially for music, K-pop). K-pop, a representative product of the Korean Wave, is a multi-layered formation that is composed of hybrid cultural practices and a diverse range of lived experiences. Nowadays, much social and academic attention is being paid to the reason for the success of K-pop. This study deals with how the Korean traditional gwangdae (scaramouche or clown) culture has been passed down to develop into K-pop. For this, diachronic perspectives are applied to analyze …

Islam And Local Culture: The Peril Of State Violence And Hallyu Fandom In Indonesia (With Reference To Palestine), Ingyu Oh Dec 2024

Islam And Local Culture: The Peril Of State Violence And Hallyu Fandom In Indonesia (With Reference To Palestine), Ingyu Oh

Kritika Kultura

The invasion of Hallyu (or the Korean Wave) subculture in Indonesia created a new pattern of gendered cultural consumption in the largest Islam country in the world. The most ardent Hallyu supporters in Indonesia are women who are organizing massive urban fan gatherings, K-pop concerts, and group tours to Seoul. With a long and devastating record of state violence on Marxists, Chinese, and women in general, current public tolerance to Hallyu by the Indonesian government seems flimsy as female Hallyu fandom is threatening the mainstream Islamic value of feminine subservience. Although the strength of the local culture vis-à-vis Islam in …

By conducting a cross-cultural analysis, this study identifies the status and shifts of Hallyu in the Middle East, and analyzes the factors that have helped it spread successfully. This paper also seeks a strategic approach for evaluating the role of the new Korean Wave in the Middle East. The number of Middle Eastern patients and families visiting Korea for medical tourism has risen rapidly in the past few years. Medical tourism from the Middle East is expected to grow, improving …

Amber Liu, K-Pop Tomboy: Reshaping Femininity In Mainstream K-Pop, Paola Laforgia, Keith Howard

Kritika Kultura

South Korean mainstream pop music, known simply as K-Pop, has become such a huge phenomenon in recent years that it is playing a decisive role in reshaping Korean culture and identity. Indeed, the K-Pop phenomenon is much more than just something musical, intertwining a complexity of sound, performance, ethnicity and gender. A contextual analysis needs therefore to take all these elements into consideration. This paper aims to show how K-Pop plays a crucial role in promoting ideologies, and defining gender roles. It does so by analyzing the music and image of the Taiwanese-American originating singer Amber Liu. Liu goes against …

From Localization To Glocalization: Contriving Korean Pop Culture To Meet Glocal Demands, Ingyu Oh Dec 2024

From Localization To Glocalization: Contriving Korean Pop Culture To Meet Glocal Demands, Ingyu Oh

Kritika Kultura

Hallyu (the Korean Wave) has been around the world since the late 1990s. Over the period of twenty years, Hallyu has evolved from a regional entertainment pop to a global cultural content. The evolution of Hallyu, like any other evolutions, has involved a long process of localization and globalization. Both K-pop and K-dramas, the two major pillars of the Hallyu revolution, are foreign imports. K-pop has mostly been influenced by European and American dance music since the early 1990s, whereas K-dramas have been heavily influenced by Japanese trendy TV dramas in the past, particularly during the 1980s. However, the localization …

Theater And Nation In Contemporary Malaysia: The Work Of The Five Arts Centre, Ricardo G. Abad Dec 2024

Theater And Nation In Contemporary Malaysia: The Work Of The Five Arts Centre, Ricardo G. Abad

Kritika Kultura

How does theater interrogate a nation that preaches racial harmony, on the one hand, yet practices racial inequality, on the other? Focusing on the work of the Five Arts Centre, an artistic company in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this paper finds that this interrogation takes place on the symbolic plane of words, images, movement, and sound, all of which cohere in performances that offer middle-class audiences alternative scenarios of a pluralistic Malaysia. Its intent is to destabilize the state’s policies on racial privileging and political suppression, to create a space for free discourse, and to advocate a pluralistic Malaysia. To do …

A Double-Edged Reading Of Gourlay’S Children Fiction Books: (Dis)Empowering The “Invisible” Filipino Community In The Uk, Neslie Carol C. Tan Dec 2024

A Double-Edged Reading Of Gourlay’S Children Fiction Books: (Dis)Empowering The “Invisible” Filipino Community In The Uk, Neslie Carol C. Tan

Kritika Kultura

This paper conducts a double-edged reading of Candy Gourlay’s two children’s novels, Tall Story (2010) and Shine (2013). It argues that on the one hand, these two award-winning books empower the “invisible” community of Filipinos in the UK by foregrounding the “subalterns” and narrating (with subtle social commentaries) their migrant motivations and woes. These narratives are further enriched by folkloric and supernatural twists that orient global audiences as well as younger generations of Filipinos abroad on Filipino cultural heritage. On the other hand, the representations embedded in these narratives contain traces of self-orientalism, reinforcing essentializing binary divisions where Filipinos or …

The Identity Of A Young Intellectual Of Colonial Korea, Jooyoung Kim Dec 2024

The Identity Of A Young Intellectual Of Colonial Korea, Jooyoung Kim

Kritika Kultura

This article explores the theme of diasporic identity as represented in Into the Light (1933), a novel written in the Japanese language by the Korean writer Sa-ryang Kim (1914-1950). The story is set in the days of Japanese imperialism and revolves around the relationship between Minami sensei, a young Korean intellectual studying abroad at the University of Tokyo, and Haruo Yamada, a boy of mixed heritage who was born to a Japanese father and a Korean mother. Like reflections in a mirror, the two figures portray certain contradictions within the empire with their “virtual” identities, which refer to identities borrowed …

A Narrative Of Those On The Move: The Case Of Takeo Arishima, Inseop Shin Dec 2024

A Narrative Of Those On The Move: The Case Of Takeo Arishima, Inseop Shin

Kritika Kultura

Takeo Arishima, a Japanese writer in the early 20th century, has a style of writing that is distinct from the other writers of Japan at the time. Hiswork demands a deeper contemplation of the conflicts that take placein the borderlands of cultures. This aspect makes up for the apparent limitedness in the quality of Japanese novels in the early modern period characterized by a lack of interest in life outside the national territory. Dealingwith issues concerning migration and Japan’s imitation of the West, A Certain Woman underscores the conflicts at the point of contact between Japan and the West. As the …

A Representation Of The Modern Chinese Youth In Yu Da-Fu's Novels, Dae-Geun Lim, Donghyun Kim

Kritika Kultura

Yu Da-fu is a writer who marked the beginning of modern Chinese literature. Working as a member of Creation Society (Chuangzao she, 創造社), Yu became a pioneer of new style in Chinese literature in the sense that he initiated the new style of lyrical novels in Chinese literature and portrayed the awakening and frustrations of the modern self. As many young Chinese intellectuals did at the time, he developed the awakening of the modern self in the empire of Japan. Yu became a literary figure during his study in Japan, where he experienced diaspora by living right in the belly …

Multicultural Bildungsroman: Coming Of Age Between Han And Sana, Maria Luis Torres Reyes Dec 2024

Multicultural Bildungsroman: Coming Of Age Between Han And Sana, Maria Luis Torres Reyes

Kritika Kultura

The paper explores ways in which the contemporary refunctioning of classical literary and cinematic genres might continue to provide vitality and relevance in building multi-faceted border-crossing societies such as multicultural communities. In the case of Korean hallyu cinema, Punch, the sleeper-hit film of 2011 about a Korean-Filipino character (“Kopino”), the “coming-of-age” genre is located at the nexus between the key features of the Bildungsroman and the project of multiculturalism in dominantly monocultural Korea. In the process of refunctioning, the aesthetics of the film is reworked from a narrative structured by the integrative logic of an individual’s development (Bildungsroman) into a …

The Matrix Of S&M In Korean Cinema: Time, Space, Trauma, Power, Taeyun Yu Dec 2024

The Matrix Of S&M In Korean Cinema: Time, Space, Trauma, Power, Taeyun Yu

Kritika Kultura

Just as Jean Baudrillard predicted that a new era would arrive wherein sexual desire would emerge, the late ’90s in Korea were marked as the fin-de-siècle of sexual explosion in popular culture, in the transition of the culture from pre-modernism to modernism. Sex and nudity became prevalent properties in popular culture and film, as a window onto the world, also joined this parade by equipping its products with erotically provocative visuals and transgressive texts. This study aims to shed some light on the social meaning of sadomasochism (S&M) by viewing it as an expression of power relations (dominance/submission & discipline/punishment) …

Optimization Of The Starch Chitosan-Based Flocculant Crosslinked By Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate On Removing Dypro 19 Textile Dye From Wastewater, Asep Nurohmat Majalis, Putri Ramadhani, Hendris Hendarsyah Kurniawan, Axel Dimaz Sanusi Pasaribu, Hafiizh Prasetia, Fitri Yuliani, Andreas Andreas, Hartati Hartati

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Dyes used in industry, especially textile dyes, are one of the water pollutants that receive much attention because they are potentially toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and generally challenging to decompose naturally. Textile dyes from wastewater can be removed through coagulation-flocculation. However, conventional coagulation-flocculation based on Fe and Al salts and synthetic polymers often leaves residual pollution. In this research, the performance of the new biopolymer-based flocculant, namely starch-ethylene glycol dimetacrylate-chitosan (SEC), which can act as coagulants and flocculants in solid-liquid separation of textile dyes, has been optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) approach. The influences of several independent variables, such …
