Understanding Cyber-Risks In Complex Next-Generation Maritime Technologies: Autonomy And Offshore Wind Energy Operations, Kimberly Tam, Avanthika Vineetha Harish, Kevin Jones Jan 2024

Understanding Cyber-Risks In Complex Next-Generation Maritime Technologies: Autonomy And Offshore Wind Energy Operations, Kimberly Tam, Avanthika Vineetha Harish, Kevin Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

When developing maritime technology, each new technology is often developed and assessed separately. However, it is likely with the convergence of systems, and greater interconnectivity between systems in the sector, that new technologies will be inter-connected digitally or operationally. Understanding the cyber risks of the larger systems of systems is important. This paper looks at the potential cyber-physical risk of future autonomy and offshore renewable energy solutions co-existing together. A threat scenario is presented using real cyber-vulnerabilities in autonomy and offshore wind systems. This paper discusses potential overall vulnerabilities when combining these two emerging technologies. It concludes with suggested mitigations …

The Rhetoric Of Abortion In Amicus Briefs, Jamie Abrams, Amanda Potts Jan 2024

The Rhetoric Of Abortion In Amicus Briefs, Jamie Abrams, Amanda Potts

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The amicus briefs filed in landmark abortion cases before the U.S. Supreme Court serve as a barometer revealing how various constituencies talk about abortion, women, fetuses, physicians, rights, and harms over time. This article conducts an interdisciplinary legal-linguistic study of the amicus briefs that were filed in the milestone abortion cases of Roe v. Wade, Doe v. Bolton, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. As the first large-scale study of all amicus briefs submitted in these key cases, this article identifies the roles of amicus briefs, analyzes their rhetorical strategies, and describes how their authors engage …

Digital Bank Holidays, Hilary J. Allen Jan 2024

Digital Bank Holidays, Hilary J. Allen

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The March 2023 run on Silicon Valley Bank spurred renewed debate about how to structure deposit insurance to best eliminate future bank runs. This Article argues, however, that deposit insurance cannot be relied upon to eliminate all bank runs, especially if technological developments create potential new bank run triggers that deposit insurance may not be responsive to. We may be expecting too much of deposit insurance, and so it is worth considering other tools that might be useful in responding to future bank runs and broader banking panics. One such tool is the “bank holiday,” last deployed in the United …

Content Moderation On End-To-End Encrypted Systems: A Legal Analysis, Charles Duan, James Grimmelmann Jan 2024

Content Moderation On End-To-End Encrypted Systems: A Legal Analysis, Charles Duan, James Grimmelmann

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Online messaging platforms like Signal and Google’s Messages increasingly use end-to-end encryption (E2EE), in which messages are encrypted on the sender’s device and decrypted on the recipient’s, so that no one else—not even the platform itself—can read them. Although E2EE protects privacy and advances human rights, the law enforcement community and others have criticized its growing use. In their view, E2EE prevents platforms and government authorities from responding to abuses and criminal activity, including child exploitation, malware, scams, and disinformation. At times, they have argued that E2EE is inherently incompatible with effective content moderation.

Computer science researchers have responded to …

Why The Supreme Court Rejected The Prospect Theory Of Copyright Scope, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2024

Why The Supreme Court Rejected The Prospect Theory Of Copyright Scope, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In Google LLC v. Oracle America, Inc. (“Google v. Oracle”), and again in Andy Warhol Found. for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith (“Warhol”), the parties and various amici presented the Court with a variety of arguments about the relationship between a copyright owner's right to make derivative works from a protected work and a user's right to make fair uses of that same work. At bottom, these arguments were about the proper, or even optimal, scope of copyright. This Essay argues that these arguments were instead grounded in a form of ““prospect theory” of copyright scope that would give …

Assessing Thermal Performance: Dataset From An Experimental Study On U-Value Variability, H. Alkhatib, B. Norton, D. Gavin, P. Lemarchand Jan 2024

Assessing Thermal Performance: Dataset From An Experimental Study On U-Value Variability, H. Alkhatib, B. Norton, D. Gavin, P. Lemarchand

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

In order to achieve energy savings in existing buildings, there is an increasing need for energy audits and performance checks. In this regard, estimating a building's U-value is crucial, and there are a variety of methods available for achieving this. Heat flow meters can be used to measure U-value in situ. This dataset reports on an experimental campaign that evaluated the insulation and performance of the fabric elements of a building located in Dublin, Ireland. The experimental study conducted on the "Block F" building provided insights into the building's thermal performance by measuring the U-value of various windows and walls …
