Approximating Discrimination Within Models When Faced With Several Non-Binary Sensitive Attributes, Yijun Bian, Yujie Luo, Ping Xu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Discrimination mitigation with machine learning (ML) models could be complicated because multiple factors may interweave with each other including hierarchically and historically. Yet few existing fairness measures are able to capture the discrimination level within ML models in the face of multiple sensitive attributes. To bridge this gap, we propose a fairness measure based on distances between sets from a manifold perspective, named as ‘harmonic fairness measure via manifolds (HFM)’ with two optional versions, which can deal with a fine-grained discrimination evaluation for several sensitive attributes of multiple values. To accelerate the computation of distances of sets, we further propose …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Very little is known about the reproductive behaviours of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). Here, we describe field observations of courtship behaviour by a whale shark at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. We witnessed and recorded following and biting behaviours by a sexually mature male of a smaller female. Following and biting are common events during courtship and copulation of other species of elasmobranchs. Our observations are consistent with earlier reports of courting behaviours in whale sharks provided by fishers, the pilot of a light plane and observations of courtship by a sexually mature male towards females held in aquaria.

Mixed Criticality Reward-Based Systems Using Resource Reservation, Amjad Ali, Shah Zeb, Madallah Alruwaili, Asad Masood Khattak, Bashir Hayat, Ki Il Kim

All Works

Real-time systems mostly interact with the external world and each input operation must meet predetermined deadlines to be useful. However, in many real-time applications, a partial result is also acceptable. We developed a reward-based mixed criticality system based on the resource reservation approach to address the problem of ensuring the effective execution of low- and high-criticality tasks in both low- and high modes, even under heavy workloads. Using dedicated servers with pessimistic resource allocation for each high criticality task ensured their execution in both modes unaffected by low criticality tasks. The surplus resources are reclaimed and assigned to low critical …
