The global network of protected areas has rapidly expanded in the past decade and is expected to cover at least 30% of land and sea by 2030 to halt biodiversity erosion. Yet, the distribution of protected areas is highly heterogeneous on Earth and the social-environmental preconditions enabling or hindering protected area establishment remain poorly understood. Here, using fourteen socioeconomic and environmental factors, we characterize the multidimensional niche of terrestrial and marine protected areas, which we use to accurately establish, at the global scale, whether a particular location has preconditions favourable for paestablishment. We reveal that protected areas, particularly the most …

In Re Gardner: Withdrawing Medical Care From Persistently Vegetative Patients, John K. Veroneau
In Re Gardner: Withdrawing Medical Care From Persistently Vegetative Patients, John K. Veroneau
Maine Law Review
As medical science and technology progress, the distinction between traditional notions of life and death becomes increasingly blurred. Persons in dire medical conditions, lacking all cognitive and sensory abilities, may now be kept "alive" for indefinite periods of time. In the seminal case of In re Quinlan, a court was first asked whether it was ever legally permissible to withhold or withdraw life-preserving care from a persistently vegetative person. Since In re Quinlan, the courts of many states, including Maine, have confronted this issue. In In re Gardner, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, affirmed a …

Milton V. Cary Medical Center: A Viable Fetus Is Not A Person Under Maine's Wrongful Death Statute, Stan Piecuch
Maine Law Review
In Milton v. Cary Medical Center, a sharply divided Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, refused to recognize a right of action for the wrongful death of a viable fetus. The court held that a viable fetus is not a person for purposes of applying Maine's wrongful death statute and that, consequently, the mother of a stillborn child could not maintain an action for the child's death. The court determined that the legislative history of the statute indicated that the Legislature did not intend the remedy to apply in the case of a child not born alive. …

Mitral Valve Prolapse With Syncope: Don’T Judge The Book By Its Cover! - Case Report, Ghadah A. Alarify, Lama A. Alrumaih, Sameer Qetab, Wael Alqarawi
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
A 33-year-old female with recurrent syncope episodes showed normal ECG and Holter results, but had mitral valve prolapse (MVP) with moderate mitral regurgitation (MR) on an echocardiogram. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) revealed mitral annulus disjunction (MAD) with fibrosis. She received an implantable loop recorder (ILR). Months later, she had a syncope correlating with self-terminating polymorphic VT (PMVT) preceded by narrow complex tachycardia, which was proven to be atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) in an electrophysiology study. Post-ablation, she had no recurrences of syncope. This case highlights the importance of ILR in avoiding unnecessary ICDs in MVP patients with syncope. .

BACKGROUND: Ontologies are fundamental components of informatics infrastructure in domains such as biomedical, environmental, and food sciences, representing consensus knowledge in an accurate and computable form. However, their construction and maintenance demand substantial resources and necessitate substantial collaboration between domain experts, curators, and ontology experts. We present Dynamic Retrieval Augmented Generation of Ontologies using AI (DRAGON-AI), an ontology generation method employing Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). DRAGON-AI can generate textual and logical ontology components, drawing from existing knowledge in multiple ontologies and unstructured text sources.
RESULTS: We assessed performance of DRAGON-AI on de novo term construction …

Despite the increasing number of international programs targeting students’ learning of research and intercultural skills, there has been limited holistic investigation of students’ experiences employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. In this study, we incorporated several measures to explore students’ experiences in an International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program, which benefited from the existing partnership between Virginia Tech in the U.S. and Shandong University in China. We examined students’ intercultural competence and interdisciplinary research skills and explored students’ stories of their lived experiences across three cohorts, each with five students, who completed the IRES program. Both open-ended survey responses …

The pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) involves complex mechanisms, including immune dysregulation, gut microbiota imbalances, oxidative stress, and defects in the gastrointestinal mucosal barrier. Current treatments for IBD often have significant limitations and adverse side effects, prompting a search for alternative therapeutic strategies. Natural products with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have demonstrated potential for IBD management. There is increasing interest in exploring food industry waste as a source of bioactive molecules with healthcare applications. In this study, a co-culture system of Caco-2 cells and PMA-differentiated THP-1 macrophages was used to simulate the human intestinal microenvironment. Inflammation was induced using …

Cancer is a significant health challenge globally, with millions of people affected every year, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Although other treatment options are available with limitations, chemotherapy, either standalone or combined with other therapeutic procedures, is the most commonly used practice of treating cancer. In chemotherapy, cancer cells/malignant tumors are targeted; however, due to less target specificity, along with malignant cells, normal cells are also affected, which leads to various off-target effects (side effects) that impact the patient quality of life. Out of all the different types of cancers, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer …
