We review the functioning and sustainability of coastal marshes and mangroves. Urbanized humans have a 7,000-year-old enduring relationship to coastal wetlands. Wetlands include marshes, salt flats, and saline and freshwater forests. Coastal wetlands occur in all climate zones but are most abundant in deltas. Mangroves are tropical, whereas marshes occur from tropical to boreal areas. Quantification of coastal wetland areas has advanced in recent years but is still insufficiently accurate. Climate change and sea-level rise are predicted to lead to significant wetland losses and other impacts on coastal wetlands and the humans associated with them. Landward migration and coastal retreat …

Examining The Relationship Between Employment And Health Status Among Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) In The United States, Winifred Beckles

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), characterized by challenges in social communication and repetitive behaviors, is a developmental disability that impacts over five million adults in the United States. Despite the significant amount of research literature on the association between health and employment in the general population, there remains a gap in research on the relationship between health and employment in adults with autism. Utilizing the Social Ecological Model (SEM) framework, this study examined whether there is a relationship between employment, current living status, non-paid activities, United States Census regions, type of health insurance, and health status when controlling for age, race, …

Determination Of A New Spring-Flying Species Of The Pterourus Glaucus Complex (Papilionidae) In Southern New England, Harry Pavulaan

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The Pterourus glaucus complex in three southern New England states is analyzed for cryptic speciation. What was historically considered to be one species, P. glaucus (Linnaeus, 1758), was recently split to separate P. canadensis (Rothschild & Jordan, 1906) at species rank (Hagen et al., 1991). Additionally, P. appalachiensis Pavulaan & Wright, 2002, was described as an Appalachian Mountain endemic. The western member of the complex, P. rutulus (Lucas, 1852), has frequently been considered a subspecies of P. glaucus (Scott, 1986; Tyler, Brown & Wilson, 1994), as was P. alexiares (Höpffer, 1866) (Tyler, Brown & …

Faculty Research 2024

Biological clocks and other molecular biomarkers of aging are difficult to implement widely in a clinical setting. In this study, we used routinely collected hematological markers to develop an aging clock to predict blood age and determine whether the difference between predicted age and chronologic age (aging gap) is associated with advanced aging in mice. Data from 2,562 mice of both sexes and three strains were drawn from two longitudinal studies of aging. Eight hematological variables and two metabolic indices were collected longitudinally (12,010 observations). Blood age was predicted using a deep neural network. Blood age was significantly correlated with …

A Novel Approach To Predicting Particle Deposition In A Human Lung Using A Lumped, Oscillatory Respiratory Model, Jordana E. O'Brien

Theses

Inhalation has become widely accepted as the optimal drug delivery mechanism for respiratory diseases, which often requires targeting a particular region of the lung. Mathematical models are key to under- standing the factors that influence drug transport and deposition in the lung. This study proposes a simple zero-dimensional typical path model that couples oscillatory breathing mechanics and particle deposition over multiple breathing cycles. Lung regions are lumped into compartments, and respiration is modeled using a circuit analog framework to capture airflows, lung pressures, and volumes in each lumped region. Particle transport and deposition are modeled by a mass-balance equation in …

This work attempts to define metrics for hydrodynamic exposure, using known oceanographic variables to provide a universal site assessment method for mariculture structures. Understanding environmental conditions driving open-ocean mariculture siting is crucial in establishing consistent ocean governance, minimizing adverse environmental impacts, and facilitating economically sustainable farm operations. To provide a metric of oceanic conditions and associated requirements for structural design and operation of aquaculture systems, six Exposure Indices (EI) are proposed that consider physical energy levels related to hydrodynamic forces at a site. Four of the proposed indices consider only environmental conditions, while the other two also consider the dimensions …

Human mitochondrial tRNAs (mt-tRNAs), critical for mitochondrial biogenesis, are frequently associated with pathogenic mutations. These mt-tRNAs have unusual sequence motifs and require post-transcriptional modifications to stabilize their fragile structures. However, whether a modification that stabilizes a wild-type (WT) mt-tRNA would also stabilize its pathogenic variants is unknown. Here we show that the N1-methylation of guanosine at position 9 (m1G9) of mt-Leu(UAA), while stabilizing the WT tRNA, has a destabilizing effect on variants associated with MELAS (mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes). This differential effect is further demonstrated, as removal of the m1G9 …
